What is Gate 31 in Human Design?
Gate 31 is the Gate of Influence, also called Leading. It carries the voice of "I lead" in the Throat Center. This is the energy of democratic leadership: the ability to influence, direct and represent a group through the power of what you say.
Gate 31 belongs to the Collective Understanding (Logic) Circuit. Logic is oriented toward the future. It uses patterns to understand the world and predict outcomes. Gate 31 applies that framework to leadership: you see the pattern, you recognize what needs to change, and you put it into words that others want to follow.
The I Ching hexagram 31 describes the attraction between complementary forces: the mountain below, the lake above. Influence here is not force. It creates the conditions where others move toward your direction because it serves them. That is why Gate 31 is also known as Democracy: your authority comes from the trust of the people you speak for, not from a title.
The paradox: many people with this gate do not feel like leaders from the inside. Self-proclaimed authority with Gate 31 falls flat; elected authority holds, for as long as the group trusts you.
What does an active Gate 31 look like?
When Gate 31 is active in your chart, you have a consistent voice of influence. People pay attention when you speak and look to you for direction.

Your words carry weight in group settings. You may find yourself stepping into leadership roles without consciously seeking them.

Your influence rests on your intent. People you know and trust follow you when they can see what you mean to do and why, and it grows through the relationships you have built.
Line 5: Self-righteousness
Others may project the role of savior-leader onto you, and it is easy to start believing you are always right. Your leadership helps most when it lets others lead themselves.
Line 6: Application
A tempered leader who applies what experience has taught. You lead through the correctness of your example rather than the volume of your voice.
Channel 31-7: The Channel of The Alpha
Gate 31 reaches toward Gate 7, the Gate of The Role of the Self in Interaction, in the G Center. When both gates are active, they form Channel 7-31, the Channel of The Alpha, which links the G Center and the Throat Center in the Collective Understanding (Logic) Circuit. Both Centers are then defined. With Gate 31 active and Gate 7 not, Gate 31 is a hanging gate.

A democratically elected leader. Gate 7 provides the inner direction and sense of role (the power behind the throne). Gate 31 provides the voice that communicates that direction to the group (the throne itself).
