Line 5 in Human Design: The Heretic

Simple way to think about it: The fifth line is the stranger who walks into a village and is quietly assumed to be the one who can fix the well. Nobody asked what they actually know; the village had already made up its mind.

Your Profile is two lines: the first number is the line of your Personality Sun, the second the line of your Design Sun. Every planet in your chart also carries a line, written after the dot: 10.5 means Gate 10, Line 5. The chart symbols guide shows where to read them.

Line 5 as your first number

With Line 5 first, it is your Personality Sun line: the part of the Profile you know and experience as yourself. 16.67% of charts have it here, in the 5/1 and 5/2 Profiles.

As the first number, the fifth line is the part of yourself you recognize. You may have noticed since childhood that people look to you for answers, ideas or rescue, sometimes before you have said a word. Seeing this clearly lets you decide what you are willing to answer for, rather than being swept into the role.

The risk on this side is taking on every expectation as if it were yours. A projection is a picture other people hold, and it can be flattering or unfair. The line does better when you can tell the difference between what you actually know and what you are assumed to know, and say so kindly.

Line 5 as your second number

With Line 5 second, it is your Design Sun line: it runs below awareness, and other people often meet it before you do. 16.46% of charts have it here, in the 2/5 and 3/5 Profiles.

As the second number, the fifth line runs below awareness. You may not feel like a person with an answer, yet others keep treating you as one. It can be puzzling to be trusted with problems you did not claim to understand, and the reaction often arrives before you have any idea why.

Because it is unconscious, this line can show up as a presence people lean on without you planning it. With 2/5, it sits under a Hermit line, so a private natural self is met by a public that has its own picture of you; with 3/5, under a Martyr line, so what you learn by trial and error is exactly what others hope you will share.

How a projection works

Jovian Archive's description of this line is that it is projected onto and expected to solve. The key word is expected. The fifth line does not need to announce anything for people to hold a picture of it, and that picture may come from a first impression, a reputation or a story that began before they met you.

This is why the line so often feels misunderstood. Others see a solution, a leader or a villain, and treat you accordingly. The line tends to be at its most steady when it knows what it can honestly offer, keeps its promises small and clear, and does not take the picture personally.

Why the fifth line reaches beyond its circle

The Jovian Archive keyword for the line is Universalization. Where Line 4 works through the people already close, the fifth line is the one whose effect travels outward to people it has never met, and its reputation can arrive ahead of it. That is part of why the expectations feel so large.

You can see the same flavor in the Gate titles. In Gate 13, Line 5 is "The Saviour"; in Gate 1 it is "The energy to attract society"; and in Gate 44 it is "Manipulation." The role of being looked to is the same, and what it looks like changes from Gate to Gate.

Line 5 and its harmonic line, Line 2

Lines 1 and 4, 2 and 5, and 3 and 6 sit in the same position of the lower and the upper trigram, so they resonate. Line 5 pairs with Line 2, The Hermit, and the Profiles built from the pair, 2/5 and 5/2, are the harmonic ones for this line.

Line 2 and Line 5 each sit in the middle of their trigram, so they share a position and resonate. The second line is the Hermit, living its own natural life, and the fifth is the Heretic, who is looked to by others. In a 2/5 or a 5/2, the two pull in different directions: one wants to be left to be itself, and the other is drawn into the public eye. One way to balance the pair is to choose when to be reached.

Each of the 64 Gates has its own Line 5, with a title Ra Uru Hu gave it in the Rave I Ching. Wherever a planet sits in a Line 5, that title colors the Gate. Open the list to find yours.

Living Line 5

At work

A fifth line can be handed responsibility early, sometimes without asking. Work goes best when you are clear about what you can actually deliver and honest about what you cannot. A reputation can open many doors, and it also raises the cost of a promise you cannot keep, so it helps to under-promise and then follow through.

In relationships

People may arrive with a picture of you already in place, and then feel let down when the real person differs. It helps to let those close to you see the ordinary side of you, and to say gently when you are being treated as an answer instead of as a friend or partner.

In decisions

The fifth line can feel pressure to decide on behalf of everyone watching. The line describes how others see you, not how to choose. Make each decision for yourself with your Type and your inner Authority, not for the picture.

Let your Type and your Authority guide the choice, and let the line explain why so many people seem to look your way. Your Strategy and Authority decide; the line describes how you go about it.

When Line 5 is misread

"Heretic means I am a troublemaker"

The name describes a role in how others see you, not a personality. A heretic in this sense is simply someone people hold expectations about, whether those are positive or negative.

"I have to solve everyone's problems"

The theme is being expected to solve, not being required to. Part of working well with this line is deciding what you will take on and what you will hand back.

"The projection is who I really am"

The picture other people hold is partly about them. Your chart, not their expectation, describes your design, which is why the line is worth reading alongside your Type and Authority.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows how your fifth line works with your Type, Authority and the other line of your Profile, and where it shows up in your Gates. Nothing is guessed from the line alone.

FAQ: Line 5 in Human Design: The Heretic

What is Line 5 in Human Design?

Line 5 is the Heretic, the fifth line of every hexagram. Its theme is being projected onto and expected to solve, so others tend to see in it an answer they need, whether or not it was offered.

Which Profiles have Line 5?

Four of the twelve. It is the first number in the 5/1 and 5/2 Profiles, and the second number in the 2/5 and 3/5 Profiles. Where it is the first number you feel the projection directly; as the second number it works on you unseen.

What is the harmonic line of Line 5?

Line 2, the Hermit. Line 5 sits in the middle of the upper trigram, as Line 2 does in the lower, so the two answer each other. The 2/5 and 5/2 Profiles are built from that pair.

Does Heretic mean I go against the rules?

No. It is Ra Uru Hu's name for the role, and it describes how others project onto the line. It says nothing about whether you follow or break rules.

Why do people expect so much from a fifth line?

The theme is projection. Others hold a picture of the line as someone with answers, and that picture forms before they know the person. The expectation comes from them, not from anything you have to prove.

How common is Line 5 in a Profile?

Jovian Archive's statistics put Line 5 as the first number in 16.67% of charts and as the second number in 16.46%, so about a third of all charts carry a fifth line in their Profile.
