Line 2 in Human Design: The Hermit
Line 2 in Human Design is the Hermit, the middle line of the lower trigram. Its theme is being naturally gifted and called out by others: the talent is already there, and others bring it out. It sits in the 2/4 and 2/5 Profiles as the first number and in the 5/2 and 6/2 Profiles as the second.
Simple way to think about it: The second line is a gifted musician who plays beautifully in an empty room and does not think of it as a talent at all. It is only when a neighbor knocks and says that was wonderful, would you play again, that the gift turns into something shared. Until the knock, the music is simply theirs.

Your Profile is two lines: the first number is the line of your Personality Sun, the second the line of your Design Sun. Every planet in your chart also carries a line, written after the dot: 10.2 means Gate 10, Line 2. The chart symbols guide shows where to read them.
Line 2 as your first number
With Line 2 first, it is your Personality Sun line: the part of the Profile you know and experience as yourself. 16.6% of charts have it here, in the 2/4 and 2/5 Profiles.
As the first number, the second line is the part of yourself you recognize. You may know that you have a knack for something, and also that you do not feel like pushing it on anyone. You are often happiest when you can follow what comes easily and be left alone to do it, and you may be a little puzzled when other people make a fuss over what feels ordinary to you.
The challenge on this side is that the gift can stay private for a long time. If you wait to be called and nobody calls, it can seem as though nothing is happening. It helps to stay where you can be seen without performing, so the people who might call you can find you. And when someone does knock, notice whether you want to answer. Your Strategy and Authority are the guide there, not the flattery.
Line 2 as your second number
With Line 2 second, it is your Design Sun line: it runs below awareness, and other people often meet it before you do. 16.72% of charts have it here, in the 5/2 and 6/2 Profiles.
As the second number, the second line runs below awareness. You may not think of yourself as gifted at all, yet others may keep pointing to something you do without effort and asking you to do more of it. You are often the last to see it, because for you it was never work.
Because it is unconscious, others tend to meet this line first: they notice the ease, the quiet and the gift before you do. With 5/2, it sits under a Heretic line that people look to for answers. With 6/2, it sits under a Role Model line that spends its middle years on the roof, watching. In both, there is a need for stretches of solitude that can surprise the people around you.
A gift that does not feel like effort
The theme of the second line is that it is naturally gifted. The word to notice is naturally. What the Hermit does well, it usually does without a plan, and that is exactly why it can be hard to see. Something that comes this easily rarely feels like an achievement, so the person who has it may not think it is worth mentioning.
This is why the line is so often described as unaware of its own talent. It is not modest on purpose. The talent simply sits in the background of daily life, like an accent you stopped hearing years ago. The people around you hear it clearly.
Why the Hermit is called out
The Jovian Archive keyword for the line is Projection. Other people see something in the second line, and they reach toward it. They may ask for help, for company, for an opinion or for a particular way of doing things. The theme of being called out by others is about that moment, when a gift that was private gets a place to land.
Compare the neighbors in the lower trigram. Line 1 builds its footing by investigating, and Line 3 finds its way through trial and error. Line 2 neither digs nor tries; it waits in its natural way of being until it is called. That is also why the line needs room. Without space to be itself, there is nothing for others to call out.
Line 2 and its harmonic line, Line 5
Lines 1 and 4, 2 and 5, and 3 and 6 sit in the same position of the lower and the upper trigram, so they resonate. Line 2 pairs with Line 5, The Heretic, and the Profiles built from the pair, 2/5 and 5/2, are the harmonic ones for this line.
Line 2 and Line 5 sit in the same position of the lower and upper trigram, which is why the pair resonate. Both lines are seen by other people more clearly than they see themselves. The second line is called out for a gift it takes for granted, while the fifth line is looked to for answers and carries other people's expectations. In a 2/5 or a 5/2 the two meet: the quiet gift becomes visible, and the person has to decide what to do with being seen.

Living Line 2
At work
The second line often does its best work where it can follow what it is naturally good at, with some freedom over how and when. It may be called into roles you never applied for, because someone noticed what you do. Say yes to the invitations that feel right, and be willing to say no to the ones that do not. Protecting stretches of quiet time is part of working well, not a luxury.
In relationships
In relationships the second line needs both closeness and solitude. You may love people and still need time alone to come back to yourself, and a partner who takes that personally can feel shut out. Saying plainly that time alone is how you recharge, and that it has nothing to do with them, makes a great deal of difference. You are often most at ease with people who simply let you be.
In decisions
Because the gift is so natural, the second line can feel that it should wait for a sign. Being called is part of the theme, but it does not replace listening to your own response.
Notice what draws you and what others call out in you, and let your Type and inner Authority make the choice. Your Strategy and Authority decide; the line describes how you go about it.

FAQ: Line 2 in Human Design: The Hermit
What is Line 2 in Human Design?
Line 2 is the Hermit, the middle line of the lower trigram. Its theme is being naturally gifted and called out by others. The Jovian Archive keyword is Projection.
Which Profiles have Line 2?
Four of the twelve. It is the first number in the 2/4 and 2/5 Profiles, and the second number in the 5/2 and 6/2 Profiles. Coming first, it is the Hermit you know in yourself; coming second, it is the Hermit others notice before you do.
What is the harmonic line of Line 2?
Line 5, the Heretic. The second line of the lower trigram and the second of the upper answer each other. The 2/5 and 5/2 Profiles are built from that pair.
Why is the second line called the Hermit?
The role name is Ra Uru Hu's. It points to the line's need for time apart, where the natural gift can be itself, and to the way the world tends to come looking for it there.
Does the Hermit need to be alone?
It needs room more than isolation. A second line can enjoy company, as long as there are also stretches of quiet. Time alone is how the line returns to itself and is not a sign of withdrawing from people.
How common is Line 2 in a Profile?
Jovian Archive's statistics put Line 2 as the first number in 16.60% of charts and as the second number in 16.72%, so about a third of all charts carry a second line in their Profile.
