Human Design Definition: How Your Energy Connects
Once you know your Type, Strategy, and Authority, one of the most useful things to understand about your chart is your Definition. Definition describes how your defined centers are connected to each other. It tells you whether your internal energy flows as one continuous circuit or whether it's divided into separate groups that don't always communicate directly.
This matters because your Definition shapes how you process information, how quickly you reach clarity on decisions, and how you experience other people's energy. Some people process everything internally and need no outside input to feel complete. Others carry a split in their design that draws them toward specific people or environments that temporarily bridge the gap. Neither is better. Both are correct for the design they belong to.
There are five Definition types: Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split, and No Definition. Each one creates a different relationship between your defined centers and a different experience of how life moves through you. Generate your free Human Design chart to see which Definition type you carry.
Simple way to think about it: Imagine your defined centers are rooms in a house. Definition tells you whether all the rooms are connected by hallways (Single), whether some rooms are on separate floors with no staircase between them (Split), or whether the rooms are spread across multiple buildings entirely (Triple or Quadruple Split). The rooms themselves don't change. What changes is how easily information travels between them.
What Is Definition in Human Design?
In your Human Design chart, some centers are colored in (defined) and some are white (undefined or open). The defined centers represent your consistent, reliable energy. Definition describes how those defined centers are connected to each other through channels.
When two defined centers are linked by a complete channel (both gates active), energy flows consistently between them. They communicate with each other all the time. When defined centers are NOT connected by a channel, they operate independently. They're both active, but they don't have a direct line between them.
Your Definition type is determined by how many separate groups of connected centers you have. If all your defined centers form one connected network, you have Single Definition. If they form two separate networks, you have Split Definition. Three groups means Triple Split. Four groups means Quadruple Split. And if you have no defined centers at all, you have No Definition, which only occurs in Reflectors.
Definition doesn't change your Type, Strategy, or Authority. What it changes is how you experience the flow of energy within your own system and how you relate to the energy of other people. It's one of the most practical pieces of your chart for understanding why you process things at the speed you do and why certain people or environments make you feel more clear or more confused.
Single Definition
Single Definition means all your defined centers are connected through channels in one continuous circuit. Energy flows freely between every defined center in your chart without interruption. About 41% of people have this configuration.
How it works
All your defined centers talk to each other directly. When one center picks up on something, the signal travels immediately to every other defined center. There are no gaps in the communication. You process information quickly because every part of your defined system is receiving the same signal at the same time. You don't need external input to reach internal clarity.
What it feels like
You tend to feel self-contained. You can work alone, process alone, and reach conclusions alone without needing to bounce ideas off other people. This doesn't mean you're antisocial. It means your internal system doesn't require outside energy to function. You may notice that you make decisions faster than people around you, and you might get impatient with people who need more time to process.
In relationships
You don't feel an energetic pull toward someone who "completes" you because your system is already complete. Your relationships are about sharing, not bridging. The challenge is understanding that your partner may not process at the same speed you do, especially if they carry a Split or Triple Split Definition.
Watch for
Impatience with others who need more processing time. Difficulty understanding why someone can't "just decide." Assuming everyone processes information the way you do. Your speed is a feature of your design, not a universal standard. Give others the space their Definition requires.
Split Definition
Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groups that are not connected by a channel. There's a gap between them. About 46% of people have this configuration, making it the most common Definition type.
How it works
Your defined centers operate in two separate circuits. Each circuit processes energy internally, but the two circuits don't communicate directly with each other. The gap between them is where specific gates or channels are missing. When someone else's energy activates those missing gates, your two circuits temporarily connect, and you feel a sense of internal completeness. This is called bridging.
What it feels like
You may feel like there are two sides of yourself that don't always agree. One part of your system says one thing, the other says something different, and you can't always reconcile them on your own. You might feel drawn to specific people or environments that make everything click into place. That "click" is the bridge forming. You process things a little slower than Single Definition because your two circuits need time to align.
Small vs wide split
A small split means only one gate is missing between your two circuits. You bridge easily and frequently. A wide split means an entire channel or more is missing. You bridge less often, and when you do, the effect is more pronounced. The wider the split, the more noticeable the shift when someone bridges it, and the more important it is to be aware of who's doing the bridging.
Watch for
Making decisions while bridged that you wouldn't make on your own. When someone's energy connects your split, everything feels clear and complete, but that clarity belongs to the composite field, not just to you. Check your Authority before committing. The bridge feels good, but your Authority tells you what's actually correct.
Triple Split Definition
Triple Split means your defined centers form three separate groups. None of the three groups are connected to each other. About 11% of people have this configuration.
How it works
Your energy operates in three independent circuits. Each one processes its own information, but they don't communicate with each other directly. No single person can bridge all three gaps. You need to be around multiple different people or move through varied environments to get all three circuits temporarily connected. This is why Triple Splits often thrive in group settings, public spaces, and socially dynamic environments.
What it feels like
You may feel like you have three distinct modes of operating. Different environments and people activate different parts of your system. You might notice that you feel like a different person depending on who you're around, not because you're being inauthentic, but because different people bridge different parts of your chart. You need variety. Staying in one environment with one person for too long can feel stagnant.
In relationships
Unlike Split Definition, you can't look to one partner to make your system feel complete. Your partner bridges one gap but not the other two. This is correct for your design. It means you need a social life, community, and varied interactions outside your primary relationship. This isn't restlessness. It's how your energy is built to function.
Watch for
Conditioning from the open centers and bridging gates in your chart. Triple Splits are actually more conditioned by their open centers than by their bridges. Also watch for the temptation to overschedule socially. You need variety, but your Strategy still determines the correct way to engage with people and opportunities.
Quadruple Split Definition
Quadruple Split means your defined centers form four separate groups. This requires at least eight defined centers, which makes it extremely rare, occurring in roughly 0.5 to 1% of people.
How it works
Your energy operates in four independent circuits. With eight or nine centers defined, you take in very little energy from the outside world. Your system is highly fixed and internally consistent, but the four circuits need time to communicate through you. Processing is slow and deliberate. Information has to pass through four separate internal "committees" before you reach clarity.
What it feels like
You may feel very fixed in your ways. Change comes slowly. You know what you know, and shifting your perspective requires significant time and internal processing. You might feel most comfortable forming close bonds with two or three people who between them bridge your four circuits. Unlike Triple Splits, public spaces don't serve you as well. You need intimate, trusted connections rather than crowds.
In relationships
You need more than one person to bridge your full system, but you don't need a crowd. Two or three close relationships that together cover your bridging needs create the most supportive environment. You're likely a Generator or Manifesting Generator given the amount of definition required.
Watch for
Rushing decisions because other people's timelines don't match your processing speed. Your four circuits need real time to reach internal alignment. Give yourself that time. Also watch for rigidity. With so much fixed energy, flexibility can feel threatening, but your open gates and centers still bring opportunities for growth and wisdom.
No Definition (Reflectors)
No Definition means you have no defined centers at all. This is the hallmark of the Reflector Type, occurring in about 1% of people.
How it works
With no defined centers, you have no fixed internal energy. Instead, you take in and amplify the energy of everyone around you. Your entire system is open, which means you reflect the health, dynamics, and energy of your environment. You still have activated gates from your planetary positions, but no complete channels connecting centers.
What it feels like
You feel different depending on who you're with and where you are. This isn't inconsistency. It's how you're designed to operate. You sample the energies around you, and the quality of what you sample directly affects how you feel. Finding the right environment isn't a preference for Reflectors. It's a survival mechanism. The wrong environment doesn't just feel bad. It distorts your entire experience of yourself.
Decision-making
Your Lunar Authority asks you to wait a full 28-day lunar cycle before making major decisions. This gives you time to experience the decision from every energetic angle as the Moon moves through all 64 gates. What feels right on day 3 may feel completely different on day 18. The full cycle gives you the complete picture.
Watch for
Identifying with energy that isn't yours. Because every center is open, you absorb and amplify everything around you. The key question is always: "Is this mine?" Learning to discharge other people's energy through time alone is essential for maintaining clarity about who you actually are underneath what you're reflecting.
Definition and Decision-Making
Your Definition type directly affects how you experience the decision-making process, even though your Authority remains the final arbiter.
Speed of processing
Single Definition processes fastest because all defined centers communicate instantly. Split Definition takes longer because two separate circuits need to align. Triple Split needs even more time and often needs varied input. Quadruple Split is the slowest, with four independent circuits that each need to weigh in. None of these speeds are wrong. Each is correct for the design it belongs to.
Clarity in isolation vs with others
Single Definition finds clarity alone. Split Definition often finds clarity in the presence of a specific person who bridges the gap. Triple Split finds clarity by moving through different environments and people. Quadruple Split finds clarity through a small, trusted inner circle. Understanding this prevents you from judging yourself for needing what your design actually requires.
The bridging trap
For any Split type, the moment someone bridges your gap, everything feels clear and aligned. But that clarity is the composite field talking, not necessarily your own Authority. The bridging energy is temporary. When the other person leaves, the clarity may leave with them. Always return to your Authority for the final decision. The bridge shows you what wholeness feels like. Your Authority tells you what's correct for you.
Authority still leads
Regardless of your Definition, your Authority is the decision-making tool. Definition affects the speed and context of processing, but it doesn't override your Sacral response, your emotional wave, your Splenic flash, or any other Authority. Think of Definition as the environment in which your Authority operates. It's the room. Your Authority is the voice in the room that matters most.
Definition in Relationships
Definition is one of the most revealing elements in relationship dynamics because it explains why certain people make you feel complete, why others make you feel scattered, and why some partnerships just click while others constantly feel like something is missing.
Single + Split
The Single Definition partner processes quickly and may get frustrated waiting for the Split partner to reach clarity. The Split partner may feel rushed or pressured. The fix: the Single partner gives space. The Split partner communicates when they need time. Neither is wrong. The processing speeds are different by design.
Split + Split
Two Split Definition partners may bridge each other perfectly, creating a sense that they've found their "other half." This can feel magnetic and deeply satisfying. The awareness needed: when you bridge each other's splits, the clarity you feel together may not survive separation. Decisions made while bridged need to be checked against individual Authority.
Triple Split in partnership
A Triple Split partner needs social variety outside the relationship. This isn't a reflection on the partnership. It's a design requirement. The partner who doesn't understand this may interpret the need for outside interaction as dissatisfaction. Naming it early removes the confusion: "I need different energies to feel fully online. It has nothing to do with you."
Using the compatibility calculator
A composite chart shows exactly where two people bridge each other's splits and where new splits form in the partnership. Understanding the Definition dynamics of the composite gives you a practical map for navigating processing speed differences, decision-making friction, and the natural rhythms of connection and space in the relationship.
How to Find Your Definition
Your Definition type is listed in your chart data, usually near your Type, Strategy, and Authority. It will say Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split, or No Definition. If it says "Split," it may also specify whether it's a small split or wide split.
You can also identify your Definition visually by looking at your BodyGraph. Count how many separate groups of connected defined centers you have. If all the colored-in centers are linked by colored-in channels, you're Single. If there are two disconnected groups, you're Split. Three groups means Triple Split. Four means Quadruple Split. No colored centers at all means No Definition.

Quick tip: If you're Split Definition, look at which gates are missing between your two groups. Those "bridging gates" tell you exactly what kind of energy you're most susceptible to from other people. Understanding your bridges is one of the fastest ways to recognize when you're being conditioned versus when you're genuinely clear.
Daily Awareness
Your Definition doesn't require special maintenance. It runs in the background of your design. But bringing awareness to it helps you work with your natural processing style rather than against it.
Know your processing speed
If you're Single Definition, trust your quick internal processing without second-guessing it. If you carry a split, give yourself the time your design needs. Stop comparing your processing speed to someone else's. The right speed is the one your Definition creates.
Notice the bridge
If you carry any type of split, start noticing when your energy suddenly feels clear, aligned, and whole. That's a bridge forming. It's useful information, but it's not a decision-making signal. Notice the bridge, appreciate it, and then check your Authority before acting on the clarity it creates.
Environment matters
Triple and Quadruple Splits need to be intentional about their social environments. Triple Splits need variety. Quadruple Splits need trusted intimacy. Single Definitions can afford more solitude. Match your daily environment to what your Definition actually requires, not what you think it should require.
Don't pathologize your design
Split Definition is not brokenness. Triple Split is not scattered energy. Quadruple Split is not slowness. No Definition is not emptiness. Each configuration is a complete and correct design. The work isn't to fix your Definition. It's to understand it and stop fighting it.
Your Definition tells you something fundamental about how life moves through you. It's the architecture of your internal processing. When you stop fighting your natural speed, stop judging yourself for needing what your design requires, and stop comparing your processing to someone else's, the system works exactly the way it was designed to.
Quick recap: Definition describes how your defined centers are connected. Single Definition (41%) has all centers linked in one circuit and processes quickly. Split Definition (46%) has two separate groups and often feels drawn to people who bridge the gap. Triple Split (11%) has three groups and needs varied social environments. Quadruple Split (~1%) has four groups and needs trusted intimacy. No Definition (~1%) belongs to Reflectors. Your Definition affects processing speed and relationship dynamics but does not change your Type, Strategy, or Authority. Create your free chart to find your Definition type.

FAQ: Human Design Definition
What is Definition in Human Design?
Definition describes how your defined centers are connected to each other through channels. It determines whether your internal energy flows as one continuous circuit (Single), two separate groups (Split), three groups (Triple Split), four groups (Quadruple Split), or has no defined centers at all (No Definition, which only occurs in Reflectors). It affects your processing speed and how you experience other people's energy.
What is Single Definition?
Single Definition means all your defined centers are connected in one unbroken circuit. Energy flows freely between every defined center. You process information quickly and don't need outside input to reach internal clarity. About 41% of people have Single Definition. You are energetically self-contained, though this doesn't mean you don't benefit from relationships.
What is Split Definition?
Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groups that aren't connected by a channel. You may feel drawn to people who activate the missing gates between your two groups, temporarily bridging the gap. About 46% of people have Split Definition. Splits can be small (one gate missing) or wide (an entire channel or more missing).
What is Triple Split Definition?
Triple Split Definition means your defined centers form three separate, unconnected groups. No single person can bridge all your gaps, so you thrive in varied social environments where different people activate different parts of your system. About 11% of people have Triple Split. You need diversity in your interactions to feel fully energized.
What is Quadruple Split Definition?
Quadruple Split Definition means your defined centers form four separate groups. This requires at least eight defined centers and occurs in roughly 1% of people. You process very slowly and deliberately, with four internal circuits that each need time to weigh in. You do best with a small circle of trusted people rather than large social settings.
What is bridging in Human Design?
Bridging happens when another person's energy activates the gates or channels that are missing between your split groups, temporarily connecting your separate circuits. When someone bridges your split, you feel a sense of wholeness and clarity. This is useful but temporary. Decisions made while bridged should still be checked against your Authority because the clarity belongs to the composite field, not just to you.
Does my Definition change my Authority?
No. Your Definition affects your processing speed and how you experience clarity, but your Authority remains the final decision-making tool. A Split Definition with Emotional Authority still waits through the emotional wave. A Single Definition with Sacral Authority still listens for the gut response. Definition is the context. Authority is the decision-maker.
How do I find my Definition type?
Your Definition type is listed in your chart data alongside your Type, Strategy, and Authority. You can also identify it visually by counting how many separate groups of connected defined centers you see on your BodyGraph. Generate your free chart to see your Definition type along with every other element of your design.
Why do I feel different around certain people?
If you carry a Split, Triple Split, or Quadruple Split Definition, certain people activate the missing gates between your separate groups. When this happens, your circuits temporarily connect and you feel more whole, clear, or aligned. This isn't chemistry in the romantic sense. It's mechanics. Their energy is bridging your split. Understanding this helps you distinguish between genuine connection and energetic bridging.
How does Definition affect relationships?
Definition shapes how two people experience each other energetically. Single Definition partners process quickly and may feel impatient. Split partners seek bridging and may feel magnetically drawn to specific people. Triple Splits need social variety outside the relationship. Understanding each other's Definition type prevents misinterpreting design differences as relationship problems. A compatibility chart shows exactly where bridging occurs between two people.
