Simple way to think about it: The fourth line is the person who gets a job, a home or an idea because someone they know said, "I have just the thing for you." The door was always there; a familiar hand is what opens it.

Your Profile is two lines: the first number is the line of your Personality Sun, the second the line of your Design Sun. Every planet in your chart also carries a line, written after the dot: 10.4 means Gate 10, Line 4. The chart symbols guide shows where to read them.

Line 4 as your first number

With Line 4 first, it is your Personality Sun line: the part of the Profile you know and experience as yourself. 16.66% of charts have it here, in the 4/6 and 4/1 Profiles.

As the first number, the fourth line is the part of yourself you recognize. You probably already sense that your life moves through people: that the friend of a friend, the old neighbor or the familiar face at the event matters more than a cold approach ever does. Knowing that lets you tend your circle on purpose instead of by accident.

The risk on this side is treating the network as a tool. Opportunist is a name for how the line moves, not a license to use people, and a circle kept only for what it can deliver tends to go quiet. The line does best when the connections are real and the giving goes both ways.

Line 4 as your second number

With Line 4 second, it is your Design Sun line: it runs below awareness, and other people often meet it before you do. 16.63% of charts have it here, in the 1/4 and 2/4 Profiles.

As the second number, the fourth line runs below awareness. You may not notice how much of your life has come through people until you look back and see how many turning points began with an introduction, an invitation or a recommendation. Other people often see it first, because they are the ones doing the introducing.

Because it is unconscious, this line can show up as an ease with others that you did not plan. With 1/4, it sits under an Investigator line that wants a secure foundation; with 2/4, under a Hermit line, so a natural self can be drawn out through the people who know it well.

The first line of the upper trigram

Every Gate is a hexagram of six lines. The first three form the lower trigram, the foundation, and the fourth is where the upper trigram begins. Jovian Archive's keyword for this line is Externalization, and it fits the position: after three lines of building something inward, the fourth is the first to turn outward and meet other people.

That is why the fourth line is so tied to relationships. It is the point in the hexagram where what has been built stops being private. Gate 1 shows the contrast well. Its Line 4 is called "Aloneness as the medium of creativity," while the same line in Gate 13 is "Fatigue"; the one position holds very different experiences.

What the Opportunist actually does

The canon summarizes this line as working through an existing network, and the word existing matters. The fourth line is less about meeting new people constantly than about the depth of the circle it already has: family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, people who have known it a long time. Those are the people who open doors.

Opportunity here means a door opening, not a prize being grabbed. The line often finds that when it stays present with its people, offers arrive without much chasing, and when it cuts itself off, things dry up. It is a good reason to look after friendships for their own sake, since they are also the way this line moves.

Line 4 and its harmonic line, Line 1

Lines 1 and 4, 2 and 5, and 3 and 6 sit in the same position of the lower and the upper trigram, so they resonate. Line 4 pairs with Line 1, The Investigator, and the Profiles built from the pair, 1/4 and 4/1, are the harmonic ones for this line.

Line 1 and Line 4 are each the first line of their trigram, so they share a position and resonate. The first line builds a foundation by investigating until it feels secure; the fourth carries that security out to other people. In a 1/4 or a 4/1, the two work as a pair: one needs to feel solid, and the other makes sure that solid ground is shared with a circle that supports it.

Living Line 4

At work

Work tends to come through people you already know, so a reputation among colleagues, former clients and friends of friends can matter more than any advertisement. Roles where relationships are the job can suit a fourth line well. It helps to keep in touch before you need anything, and to give help without counting, so the network stays alive rather than transactional.

In relationships

The fourth line values the people it knows well, and it can feel a loss in its circle more sharply than it admits. Close friends and family are often central, not extras. It helps to say plainly what your people mean to you, and to notice when a friendship has become a habit of use rather than a bond.

In decisions

The fourth line does not tell you what to decide, only where help is likely to be. It can be useful to talk a choice over with someone you trust, as long as the choice itself is made the way your Type and inner Authority guide you.

Use your Type and your inner Authority for the decision, and let the line describe the people who tend to open the way. Your Strategy and Authority decide; the line describes how you go about it.

When Line 4 is misread

"Opportunist means I use people"

The name describes how the line moves through a network, not a motive. A circle built on real connection is what makes the line work; one used only for gain tends to stop opening doors.

"I need to network constantly"

The theme is an existing network. Depth matters more than numbers, and the line usually does well by looking after the people it already knows.

"Everything will arrive if I wait for the right person"

The line works through people, but you still act. Your Type and Authority decide what to say yes to when an introduction or invitation arrives.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows how your fourth line works with your Type, Authority and the other line of your Profile, and where it shows up in your Gates. Nothing is guessed from the line alone.

FAQ: Line 4 in Human Design: The Opportunist

What is Line 4 in Human Design?

Line 4 is the Opportunist, the first line of the upper trigram in every hexagram. Its theme is working through an existing network, so what it needs tends to come through the people it already knows.

Which Profiles have Line 4?

Four of the twelve. It is the first number in the 4/1 and 4/6 Profiles, and the second number in the 1/4 and 2/4 Profiles. In first place it is the part of the Profile you recognize; in second place it works without your noticing.

What is the harmonic line of Line 4?

Line 1, the Investigator. Line 4 opens the upper trigram as Line 1 opens the lower, so the two echo each other. The 1/4 and 4/1 Profiles are built from that pair.

Does the Opportunist have to be good at networking?

Not in the sense of working a room. The line is about the circle you already have. A fourth line can be a quiet person whose life still moves through a small number of close, long-standing connections.

Is Line 4 the same in every Gate?

No. The position gives the shared theme, but each Gate has its own Line 4 title, such as Survival in Gate 25 and Honesty in Gate 44. The table on this page lists all 64.

How common is Line 4 in a Profile?

Jovian Archive's statistics put Line 4 as the first number in 16.66% of charts and as the second number in 16.63%, so about a third of all charts carry a fourth line in their Profile.
