Line 3 in Human Design: The Martyr
Line 3 in Human Design is the Martyr, the top line of the lower trigram. Its theme is learning by trial and error: it finds out what works by trying, and what does not by running into it. It sits in the 3/5 and 3/6 Profiles as the first number and in the 1/3 and 6/3 Profiles as the second.
Simple way to think about it: The third line is the person who learns to ride a bike by falling off it a few times. Nobody can hand them the balance, because they only find it by wobbling. Each scraped knee is information, and a few weeks later they are riding down the street.

Your Profile is two lines: the first number is the line of your Personality Sun, the second the line of your Design Sun. Every planet in your chart also carries a line, written after the dot: 10.3 means Gate 10, Line 3. The chart symbols guide shows where to read them.
Line 3 as your first number
With Line 3 first, it is your Personality Sun line: the part of the Profile you know and experience as yourself. 16.44% of charts have it here, in the 3/5 and 3/6 Profiles.
As the first number, the third line is the part of yourself you recognize. You probably know that you learn by doing, that plans tend to change on contact with real life, and that you have changed course more than once. You may also have felt that things fall apart more often for you than for other people, and wondered what that says about you.
The challenge on this side is taking the breaks personally. A project that fails, a plan that shifts or a relationship that ends can feel like proof that something is wrong. The line asks for another reading. Each try shows you what does not work, which is what makes the next try better, and every version of you that tried is part of how the line learns.
Line 3 as your second number
With Line 3 second, it is your Design Sun line: it runs below awareness, and other people often meet it before you do. 16.89% of charts have it here, in the 1/3 and 6/3 Profiles.
As the second number, the third line runs below awareness. You may not describe yourself as someone who learns by trial and error, yet your life may show a pattern of experiments: jobs, places, interests and people tried and then changed. The line works in the background, and it may only look like a pattern in hindsight.
Because it is unconscious, others tend to see the adaptability before you do. They may see someone resilient and flexible, who bounces back quickly, while you feel like you are just muddling through. With 1/3, the third line sits under an Investigator that wants a foundation; with 6/3, under a Role Model whose first years look a lot like a third line's.
What trial and error really means
The third line is the last line of the lower trigram, and the theme the canon gives it is that it learns by trial and error. Trying is the point. A third line does not reach understanding by studying first, as Line 1 does, and it does not wait to be called, as Line 2 does. It goes and finds out.
The Jovian Archive keyword is Adaptation, and it explains the strength of the line. Every attempt that does not work shows something about how things are, and the third line keeps what it learned and adjusts. Over time that makes it one of the more practical, resilient lines.
Why the name Martyr is misleading
The role name Martyr, given by Ra Uru Hu, sounds heavier than the line really is. It is easy to hear sacrifice and suffering in it. The theme the canon gives is simply that the line learns through experience, and a good deal of that experience involves things not going to plan.
A third line that treats every breakdown as a verdict on itself will find the name hard to carry. A third line that treats each one as information has a freedom the other lines do not: it is allowed to try, to fail and to try again, and the trying is how it becomes skilled.
Line 3 and its harmonic line, Line 6
Lines 1 and 4, 2 and 5, and 3 and 6 sit in the same position of the lower and the upper trigram, so they resonate. Line 3 pairs with Line 6, The Role Model, and the Profiles built from the pair, 3/6 and 6/3, are the harmonic ones for this line.
Line 3 and Line 6 sit in the same position of the lower and upper trigram, which is why the pair resonate. Both lines learn from experience, but at different heights. The third line learns inside it, by bumping into what does not work. The sixth line goes through years of the same kind of learning and then steps back to see what it all meant. In a 3/6 or a 6/3 the two keep each other going: one keeps testing, the other keeps asking what the testing was for.
Line 3 in every Gate
Each of the 64 Gates has its own Line 3, with a title Ra Uru Hu gave it in the Rave I Ching. Wherever a planet sits in a Line 3, that title colors the Gate. Open the list to find yours.

Living Line 3
At work
The third line often does well in roles where it can adapt, test and adjust, and does less well in work where every step is laid out and nothing may change. A career with a few turns in it is common and not a problem. Treat each job as a place to learn something you will use, and when one ends, ask what it taught you before you decide what it cost.
In relationships
In relationships the third line learns what works by being in them, and that can include a few that did not. It can make you cautious about trusting that anything will last, or hard on yourself when it does not. Telling a partner that you learn by experience, and that you need room to adjust, helps them see the changes as part of how you grow and not as a lack of commitment.
In decisions
The third line can talk itself into seeing every setback as a sign it chose wrongly. A choice that did not work out still taught you something, and that is how the line is meant to run.
Let the line remind you that mistakes are information, and let your Type and inner Authority guide what you try next. Your Strategy and Authority decide; the line describes how you go about it.

FAQ: Line 3 in Human Design: The Martyr
What is Line 3 in Human Design?
Line 3 is the Martyr, the top line of the lower trigram. Its theme is learning by trial and error. The Jovian Archive keyword is Adaptation.
Which Profiles have Line 3?
Four of the twelve. It is the first number in the 3/5 and 3/6 Profiles, and the second number in the 1/3 and 6/3 Profiles. First, it is the trial and error you are aware of; second, it works under the surface.
What is the harmonic line of Line 3?
Line 6, the Role Model. Each is the top of its trigram, so the two speak from the same height on different floors. The 3/6 and 6/3 Profiles are built from that pair.
Does the Martyr line mean I will suffer?
No. The role name was given by Ra Uru Hu, but the theme is learning by trial and error. The line finds out by trying, and the rough moments are part of the information it gathers.
Why do third lines change course so often?
Adapting is how the line learns. Each attempt shows what works and what does not, so changes of direction are the line using what it found and not a sign that something is wrong.
How common is Line 3 in a Profile?
Jovian Archive's statistics put Line 3 as the first number in 16.44% of charts and as the second number in 16.89%, so about a third of all charts carry a third line in their Profile.
