Human Design Circuitry: The Three Circuits Explained

Circuitry is the layer of Human Design that explains what your channels are for. Every one of the 36 channels belongs to a circuit, and the circuit tells you who that energy is meant to serve: yourself, the people close to you, or everyone.

There are three circuits. Individual carries mutation and exists to empower the self. Tribal carries support and exists to sustain the group you belong to. Collective carries sharing and exists to benefit everyone, including people you will never meet.

Most people read their channels one at a time and never notice the pattern underneath. Circuitry is that pattern. It is often the piece that explains why you keep gravitating toward certain kinds of work and certain kinds of people. Generate your free chart to see which channels you carry.

Simple way to think about it: a channel tells you what energy you have. A circuit tells you who it is for. Two people can both be creative, but one creates to express something only they can see, and the other creates to give a group something it needs. Same energy, different circuit.

What is Circuitry in Human Design?

Your channels connect your centers and create the defined parts of your chart. Circuitry groups those 36 channels into three families based on what the energy is designed to do.

This is not a personality layer. It is closer to a description of purpose. A channel in the Individual circuit behaves differently from one in the Tribal circuit even when the two sit next to each other in your BodyGraph, because they are answering different questions. Individual asks what is true for me. Tribal asks what keeps us going. Collective asks what can we all learn from this.

The practical value is that circuitry explains friction. If most of your definition is Individual and you work somewhere that runs on Tribal energy, the mismatch is structural rather than personal. You are not failing to fit in. You are built for something the room is not asking for.

It also explains attraction. People often find themselves repeatedly drawn to work, partners, and communities that match their own circuitry, without ever being able to name why.

The Individual Circuit

15 of the 36 channels. The largest circuit.

Individual energy exists to mutate. It carries what is new, what has not been done before, and what only one person can see. It is not meant to be understood by the group when it arrives. That is the point of it.

The keynote of Individual circuitry is empowerment through being yourself. Not self-improvement. Not fitting in better. The specific and often inconvenient business of being the one who sees it differently. Individual energy also runs low at times, by design. Those moods are not a fault. They are where the mutation gets made.

Knowing

1-8 Inspiration, 2-14 the Beat, 3-60 Mutation, 12-22 Openness, 23-43 Structuring, 24-61 Awareness, 25-51 Initiation, 28-38 Struggle, 39-55 Emoting. Knowing arrives whole, with no reasoning behind it, and it cannot be produced on demand.

Integration

10-20 Awakening, 10-34 Exploration, 10-57 Perfected Form, 20-34 Charisma, 20-57 the Brain Wave, 34-57 Power. These six sit among gates 10, 20, 34 and 57. They are about self-empowerment in the present moment, and they are the most self-contained energy in the system.

What it feels like

Being out of step. Timing that does not match anyone else's. Ideas that arrive complete and cannot be explained. Long stretches where nothing happens followed by something that changes everything.

The trap

Trying to make Individual energy palatable. Explaining it early. Softening it. Waiting for agreement before acting. Mutation is not democratic. It lands or it does not.

The Tribal Circuit

7 of the 36 channels. The smallest circuit.

Tribal energy exists to support. It is about the people you are actually responsible for. Family, business partners, the small group whose survival is tied to yours. It is the circuit of agreements, resources, loyalty and touch.

Tribal energy runs on the bargain. Something is given, something is expected back, and the arrangement holds the group together. That sounds transactional, and it is, in the most useful sense. Tribal channels are where support, money, care and continuity live.

Ego / Will

19-49 Synthesis, 21-45 Money, 26-44 Surrender, 32-54 Transformation, 37-40 Community. This is where willpower, resources and continuity sit. Promises made here are meant to be kept, which is why breaking one costs a Tribal person more than it costs most people.

Defense

6-59 Mating, 27-50 Preservation. The two channels about intimacy, reproduction and protecting the young. The oldest energy in the system, and the most physical.

What it feels like

Being the one people rely on. Noticing who needs what before they say it. Caring about whether the arrangement is fair. Discomfort when agreements are vague.

The trap

Giving support that was never agreed and then resenting it. Tribal energy needs the bargain said out loud. Unspoken expectations are where Tribal relationships go wrong.

The Collective Circuit

14 of the 36 channels.

Collective energy exists to share. Whatever it finds is meant to go out to everyone, including people the person will never meet. It is the circuit of patterns, experiments and lessons that outlive the person who learned them.

Collective splits into two halves that work in opposite directions. Logic looks forward and tests whether a pattern will hold. Abstract looks backward and makes sense of what already happened. Both are trying to make something useful for everybody, not for one person or one group.

Understanding (Logic)

4-63 Logic, 5-15 Rhythm, 7-31 the Alpha, 9-52 Concentration, 16-48 the Wavelength, 17-62 Acceptance, 18-58 Judgment. Pattern recognition, correction and repetition. Logic wants to know whether something will work next time, and it gets there by practising rather than by insight.

Sensing (Abstract)

11-56 Curiosity, 13-33 the Prodigal, 29-46 Discovery, 30-41 Recognition, 35-36 Transitoriness, 42-53 Maturation, 47-64 Abstraction. Experience first, meaning afterwards. Abstract energy has to live through something before it can say what it was about.

What it feels like

Wanting to tell people what you found. Caring about whether something is true in general rather than true for you. Restlessness when knowledge sits unused.

The trap

In Logic, sharing before the pattern is proven. In Abstract, explaining an experience while still inside it. Collective energy needs its own timing before it is useful to anyone.

How to read your own circuitry

Look at the channels in your chart and note which circuit each belongs to. Then count. The circuit with the most channels usually describes how you naturally move. There is no scoring system, though, and one channel can shape a whole life.

Mostly Individual

You will often feel out of step with groups and better on your own terms. Work that needs consensus will drain you. Work that needs someone to see what nobody else has seen will not.

Mostly Tribal

You are built for the small group. Family businesses, partnerships, teams with clear roles. You notice fairness, and loose agreements make you uneasy.

Mostly Collective

You are built to find things out and pass them on. Teaching, writing, research, and anything where the result is meant for people you will never meet.

No clear majority

Common, and it is not a problem. See mixed circuitry below.

Mixed circuitry

Most charts carry channels from more than one circuit. That is normal and it is usually where the interesting tension lives.

Someone with Individual and Tribal definition may spend years torn between doing what is theirs to do and looking after the people who depend on them. Someone with Collective and Individual may want to share what they find and resist being understood at the same time.

These are not conflicts to resolve. They are the actual shape of the person. The useful move is to name which circuit is driving a decision, rather than assume one part of you is being difficult.

Circuitry does not tell you what to do. It tells you who your energy was built for. Most of the frustration people describe about work and relationships comes from years in the wrong circuit's environment, without knowing there was a name for it.

Quick recap: Circuitry groups the 36 channels into three families. Individual (15 channels) carries mutation and empowers the self. Collective (14 channels) carries sharing and benefits everyone. Tribal (7 channels) carries support and sustains the group. Your circuitry explains who your energy is for. Pull up your free chart to see which channels you carry.

FAQ: Human Design Circuitry

What is circuitry in Human Design?

Circuitry groups the 36 channels into three families based on what the energy is for. Individual energy exists to mutate and empower the self. Tribal energy exists to support the group you are responsible for. Collective energy exists to share what it finds with everyone.

How many circuits are there?

Three: Individual, Tribal and Collective. Individual carries 15 of the 36 channels, Collective carries 14, and Tribal carries 7. Individual and Collective are also each split into two sub-groups.

How do I find my circuitry?

Look at the channels defined in your chart. Each one belongs to a circuit. Count how many fall into each and you have your circuitry balance. Generate your free chart to see your active channels.

Can I have more than one circuit?

Yes, and most people do. Mixed circuitry is normal. It often shows up as an internal pull between doing what is yours alone, supporting the people close to you, and sharing what you know more widely.

What does it mean if I have no defined channels?

If you have no defined channels you are a Reflector, and no circuit is fixed in your design. You take in and reflect whatever circuitry is around you, which is why environment matters more for Reflectors than for any other Type.

Which circuit is best?

None of them. Each exists because the others cannot do its job. Mutation without support does not survive. Support without sharing does not spread. Sharing without mutation has nothing new to share.

What is the Integration channel group?

Integration is a set of six channels within the Individual circuit, sitting among gates 10, 20, 34 and 57. It is concerned with self-empowerment in the present moment and is the most self-contained energy in the system.

Is circuitry the same as Definition?

No. Definition describes whether your defined centers connect in one circuit or several separate groups. Circuitry describes what family each channel belongs to. A chart can have Single Definition and channels from all three circuits.
