How we choose

  • From the source Written by Ra Uru Hu or his school. The system exactly as it was taught.
  • Modern guide A teacher's own introduction. Easier to read, with some interpretation added.
  • Related system Not Human Design, but often read beside it.

Every book is in print, well reviewed by readers, and checked against the system's own terms. Nothing here is paid placement.

The Source Texts

Books from Ra Uru Hu, who originated the system, and from the school he founded. Start here when you want the system exactly as it was taught.

From the source

Rave I'Ching Card Deck

Lynda Bunnell
Best for Daily study
A card for every Gate, made as a companion to The Definitive Book. Pull the cards for the Gates in your own chart and learn your design one Gate at a time.
Root text

The I Ching or Book of Changes

Richard Wilhelm, translated by Cary F. Baynes
Best for Where the Gates come from
The classic English translation of the ancient Chinese text, with a foreword by C. G. Jung. Its 64 hexagrams are the root of the 64 Gates. It is not a Human Design book, but it is the one the Gates grew from.

FAQ: Human Design Books, Podcasts and Courses

What is the best book to learn Human Design?

For the complete system, The Definitive Book of Human Design by Lynda Bunnell with Ra Uru Hu is the standard reference. It is dense, so many people start with a plain-language book like Understanding Human Design by Karen Curry Parker, then move to the Definitive Book. Whichever you choose, read it with your own chart open.

Where should a beginner start with Human Design?

Start with your free chart and learn your Type and Strategy first, then your Authority. Read one beginner book next, and keep a source text such as The Definitive Book for looking things up. Podcasts are a good way to hear the ideas applied to real lives while you learn.

Which Human Design courses are official?

The International Human Design School, Jovian Archive (founded by Ra Uru Hu) and national organizations such as Human Design America teach the system in the lineage Ra Uru Hu began. Many other teachers run good independent courses, but they are not part of that lineage, so check how closely they follow the original terms.

Are Human Design podcasts accurate?

They vary. Most are run by independent teachers who add their own interpretation, which can be helpful but is not always the original system. Use them for examples and ideas, and check any term against your chart and a source text.

What is the difference between Human Design and the Gene Keys?

Human Design is the system Ra Uru Hu originated: Type, Authority, Centers, Gates and Channels, calculated from your birth time. The Gene Keys is Richard Rudd's separate contemplative system built on the same 64 hexagrams. They share roots but have different language and aims.
