Human Design Profiles

Human Design Profiles explain how you learn, grow, and move through life. Your profile is a two-number code like 1/3 or 4/6, calculated from your birth data. Each number represents a line (1 through 6), and the combination of your two lines describes your natural role, learning style, and how your path tends to unfold.

The first number is your conscious line (Personality), the part of yourself you recognize. The second number is your unconscious line (Design), the pattern that operates beneath your awareness. Together, they create 12 possible Profiles, organized into three categories: Right Angle (personal destiny), Juxtaposition (fixed fate), and Left Angle (transpersonal karma).

On this page, you'll learn what Profiles mean, how the two numbers work together, the three profile categories, and how to find and understand your specific profile.

How to find your Human Design Profile

Generate your free chart using your birth date, exact birth time, and birth location. Your Profile appears in your chart results as two numbers, such as 3/5 or 1/3. Use this guide to understand what that Profile means and how it tends to show up in your life.

Not sure of your birth time? Use your best estimate for now. Your profile depends on accurate birth data, so updating to an exact time later will give you the most reliable result. Generate your free chart here.

What is a Human Design Profile?

In Human Design, your Profile is made of two lines, numbered 1 through 6. Together, they describe how you learn, how you grow, what kinds of experiences shape you, and how your role tends to be expressed in relationships, work, and identity.

If Type explains how your energy works and Authority explains how you make decisions, Profile helps explain how your path tends to unfold. It shows why your learning process looks the way it does, why certain life patterns keep repeating, and why your growth may not look like someone else's.

A Profile is not a label you have to perform. It is more like a natural pattern. When you understand it, you stop fighting your process and start working with it. That often brings relief, because many of the things people judge in themselves are actually part of how their design is meant to develop wisdom over time.

Simple rule: your Profile shows how your path tends to unfold through real life, not just what your chart says in theory.

Conscious vs unconscious lines

The first number in your Profile is your conscious line, sometimes called the Personality side. This is the part of your profile that you identify with, the traits you recognize in yourself and the patterns you are aware of. The second number is your unconscious line, sometimes called the Design side. This is the pattern that operates beneath your awareness, the traits that others may see in you more clearly than you see in yourself and the dynamics that shape your life without you deliberately choosing them.

This conscious/unconscious distinction matters because it changes how each line expresses. For example, Line 5 (the Heretic) operates very differently when it is conscious (in the 5/1 and 5/2, where you can feel projections happening and manage them) versus unconscious (in the 2/5 and 3/5, where projections tend to blindside you). Similarly, Line 6 (the Role Model) operates differently when conscious (in the 6/2 and 6/3, where you can feel the three-phase arc shifting) versus unconscious (in the 3/6 and 4/6, where the phases operate in the background).

The three profile categories

The 12 Profiles are organized into three categories based on the geometry of the Incarnation Cross. This geometry determines whether your life path is primarily personal, fixed, or transpersonal.

Right Angle (personal destiny)

Your path unfolds through your own development. Seven profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6.

Juxtaposition (fixed fate)

Your path is narrower and more fixed than other profiles, concentrating energy into a specific direction. One profile: 4/1.

Left Angle (transpersonal karma)

Your path involves others in a collective way, with influence that extends beyond personal relationships. Four profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3.

The 6 profile lines

Every Profile is a combination of two of these six lines. Understanding the lines makes the full profile meaning easier to grasp. Each line has a traditional name that describes its core mechanic.

Line 1: The Investigator

Built for foundations. Learns through research, depth, and certainty. Needs a solid base before committing to anything.

Line 2: The Hermit

Carries natural talent that develops in private. Needs alone time. Others often see Line 2's gifts before Line 2 does. Must be "called out."

Line 3: The Martyr

Learns through trial and error. Discovers what works by direct contact with reality. What looks like mistakes becomes experiential wisdom.

Line 4: The Opportunist

Creates opportunity through trusted relationships. Influence grows through network, community, and genuine bonds built over time.

Line 5: The Heretic

Carries a projection field. People project expectations and see practical solutions. Hero when you deliver, scapegoat when you do not. Boundaries essential.

Line 6: The Role Model

Matures through three life phases: experimentation (~to 30), observation (~30-50), and role model embodiment (50+). Wisdom takes decades to fully arrive.

FAQ: Human Design Profiles

Where do I find my Human Design Profile?

Your Profile appears in your chart results after generating your free chart using your birth date, exact birth time, and birth location. It shows as two numbers, such as 1/3 or 5/1.

What do the two numbers mean?

The first number is your conscious (Personality) line, the traits you recognize in yourself. The second number is your unconscious (Design) line, the pattern that operates beneath your awareness and often shows up in how others experience you.

What are Right Angle, Juxtaposition, and Left Angle?

These are the three profile categories based on Incarnation Cross geometry. Right Angle profiles (1/3 through 4/6) have a personal destiny focus. The 4/1 is the only Juxtaposition (fixed fate) profile. Left Angle profiles (5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3) have a transpersonal, collective focus.

What are the three life phases of Line 6?

Line 6 matures through Phase 1 (experimentation, to approximately age 30), Phase 2 (observation and integration, approximately 30-50), and Phase 3 (role model embodiment, 50+). This applies to all profiles containing Line 6: 3/6, 4/6, 6/2, and 6/3.

What is the Line 5 projection field?

Line 5 generates a field that causes people to project their needs onto you. When you meet the projection, your reputation grows. When you do not, people may turn critical. This applies to all profiles containing Line 5: 2/5, 3/5, 5/1, and 5/2.

Is one profile better than another?

No. Each Profile reflects a different learning style and life role. Alignment comes from honoring your design, not comparing yourself to someone else.

Can my profile change?

No. Your Profile is calculated from your birth data and does not change. What changes is your awareness and how consciously you live your design.

How does Profile fit with Type, Strategy, and Authority?

Type explains how your energy works. Strategy shows how to use it correctly. Authority shows how you make decisions. Profile adds depth by showing how you learn, grow, and influence others over time. The recommended order is Type → Strategy → Authority → Profile.
