Left Angle Cross of Uncertainty
The Left Angle Cross of Uncertainty is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 8, 14, 55 and 59. It is about a contribution you cannot fully plan: a creative example and a working skill, set against moods and appetites that come in waves, and worked out through the people you meet.
Simple way to think about it: Think of a musician who plays every night and never knows which night the room will come alive. The craft is steady. The mood is not. What carries the show is turning up anyway, and letting the audience become part of what happens.

Look for the line that reads Left Angle Cross of Uncertainty. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (8/14 | 55/59). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Uncertainty cross on the BodyGraph
The four Gates sit in three Centers: Gate 8 in the Throat, Gates 14 and 59 in the Sacral, and Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus. The conscious pair, 8 and 14, is also a pair in the Cross of Contagion, and the Design pair, 55 and 59, is also a pair in the Cross of The Sleeping Phoenix. A Left Angle cross borrows one pair from each.

The two rotations of the Uncertainty cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Uncertainty 1 (8/14 | 55/59)
With Contribution as your conscious Sun, what you offer comes first: you know you are here to add something real, and Power Skills, the conscious Earth, gives it a craft to stand on. This Sun sits in the Civilization quarter, purpose through form. Spirit and Sexuality work on the Design side, so your moods and appetites may show up before you can explain them.
The Uncertainty 2 (14/8 | 59/55)
Here Power Skills is the conscious theme: the work and the skill come first, and Contribution, the conscious Earth, keeps asking what the skill is for. This Sun sits in the Mutation quarter, purpose through transformation. Sexuality and Spirit run on the Design side, so other people may notice your drive and your mood before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 8: Contribution
Gate 8, Contribution, is a Throat Gate, so it carries a voice, and its hexagram is Holding Together. It completes Channel 1-8 with Gate 1 in the G Center, keynoted as a creative role model. Its lines run from Honesty and Service through The Phoney and Respect to Dharma and Communion. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of what you add by being yourself in front of others. As an Earth it keeps the rest of the cross honest: what you offer has to be real before it is shared.
Gate 14: Power Skills
Gate 14, Power Skills, sits in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work, and its hexagram is Possession in Great Measure. It completes Channel 2-14 with Gate 2 in the G Center, keynoted as being a keeper of keys. Its lines move from Money isn't everything and Management through Service and Security to Arrogance and Humility. As a Sun it makes skill and resources the raw material of your purpose. As an Earth it steadies the cross by asking whether the energy behind a contribution is really there.
Gate 55: Spirit
Gate 55, Spirit, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves, and its hexagram is Abundance. It completes Channel 39-55 with Gate 39 in the Root, keynoted as moodiness. Its lines run from Cooperation and Distrust through Innocence and Assimilation to Growth and Selfishness. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so the emotional weather runs below awareness. People around you may feel your highs and lows before you can name them.
Gate 59: Sexuality
Gate 59, Sexuality, sits in the Sacral and is the one Tribal Gate in the cross. Its hexagram is Dispersion. It completes Channel 6-59 with Gate 6 in the Solar Plexus, named Mating and keynoted as a design focused on reproduction. Its lines run from The pre-emptive strike and Shyness through Openness and Brotherhood/Sisterhood to The Femme Fatale or Casanova and The one night stand. On the Design side in both rotations, it is a drive toward closeness that others pick up before you decide anything about it.
One Gate in each quarter of the wheel
The Human Design wheel is divided into four quarters, and each has a theme. Gate 8 sits in Civilization, purpose through form. Gate 14 sits in Mutation, purpose through transformation. Gate 55 sits in Initiation, purpose through mind, and Gate 59 sits in Duality, purpose through bonding. Not one quarter is missing.
That is a lot of ground for one purpose. Your rotation decides which quarter your conscious Sun speaks from, Civilization in rotation 1 and Mutation in rotation 2, but the other two quarters are in the cross either way, working on the Design side. The result is a life that does not fit one box. You may be asked to give form to something, change it, think it through and bond over it, sometimes inside the same month.
Four Channels, and none of them is yours alone
Every Gate in this cross is half of a Channel, and the other half is not in the cross. Gate 8 needs Gate 1, Gate 14 needs Gate 2, Gate 55 needs Gate 39 and Gate 59 needs Gate 6. Whether any of those Channels is defined for you depends on the rest of your chart, or on the person standing next to you.
Some of those partners are easy to find. Gates 1 and 2 are both in the Cross of The Sphinx, so a person with that cross can complete both Channels 1-8 and 2-14 with you. Gate 6 belongs to the Cross of Eden and Gate 39 to the Cross of Tension. That is the Left Angle at work: the Channels only close in company.
Why a working cross is slow to say yes
Two of the four Gates are in the Sacral, where the energy for work lives, and one is in the Solar Plexus, which runs in waves. Together they give the cross plenty of drive and an unreliable clock. The canon names the Individual emotional wave Spike and gives it the theme of uncertainty, and Gate 55 is one of that wave's two Gates. The mood that makes a project feel like a great idea on Monday can make it feel wrong by Thursday, and neither feeling is the whole truth.
A Gate in a Center does not define it, so the cross cannot tell you your Type or your Authority. That comes from your whole chart. What the cross does suggest is patience: if your Solar Plexus is defined, give the wave time to pass before you commit. If it is not, do not mistake someone else's mood for your own. Either way, the name is a reminder that not knowing yet is a normal part of this design.
Why the Uncertainty is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Uncertainty that fits. Your contribution is only tested when someone receives it, and your moods and appetites only make sense in company. The outcome is not yours to settle alone. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 8.5 means Gate 8, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Uncertainty cross.
Uncertainty 1: Personality Sun in Gate 8, Contribution
| 8.1 Honesty | Your contribution works only when it is honest, so you say what you actually offer and no more. |
|---|---|
| 8.2 Service | You contribute best by serving something real, and you tend to be found by the people who need it. |
| 8.3 The Phoney | You can sense when your offer is turning into a pose, and you learn to catch the pretending early. |
| 8.4 Respect | Respect runs both ways: you give it before you ask for it, and your contribution lands because of that. |
| 8.5 Dharma | You carry what you offer as a path you must walk, and others watch whether you walk it. |
| 8.6 Communion | You contribute most when what you give is shared with others as a togetherness, not a performance. |
Uncertainty 2: Personality Sun in Gate 14, Power Skills
| 14.1 Money isn't everything | You are reminded that money is only one measure of your skills, and the cross asks for a wider one. |
|---|---|
| 14.2 Management | You manage what you have been given with care, and your skill grows from handling resources well. |
| 14.3 Service | Your skills are put to use for others, which is exactly where this cross wants them used. |
| 14.4 Security | You look for security in your skills first, and you work best when your base feels steady. |
| 14.5 Arrogance | Skill can tip into arrogance, so you stay open to people who see your craft more clearly. |
| 14.6 Humility | You hold your skills lightly and let others show you what they are worth, which earns trust. |
Living the Uncertainty cross
At work
People with this cross are often the ones who bring a real skill and a bit of personal style to a team, and who do their best work when the job is a fit for both. Your energy comes in waves, so the plan that works is one with room in it. Say yes to what you can see yourself finishing, and let the first excitement settle before you promise the whole thing.
In relationships
Closeness is part of this cross, and so is the unpredictability of how it feels. The people around you often meet your mood before they meet your reasons. Tell them what is moving in you instead of acting it out, and notice who stays steady beside you. A partner who can wait out a wave is worth more than one who needs an answer on the spot.
In decisions
Uncertainty gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Not knowing yet is allowed. Take the time your own Authority needs before you decide, and do not let a high or a low mood make the call for you.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your contribution follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Uncertainty cross is misread
"Uncertainty means I will never be sure of anything"
"Gate 59 means my life is about sex"
"I need a Sphinx person to complete me"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 8: What are you offering lately that is real, and what part of it is for show?
- Gate 14: Which skill of yours have you been underusing because no one has asked for it yet?
- Gate 55: What mood are you in today, and would you make the same decision tomorrow?
- Gate 59: Who do you feel drawn to be close to right now, and what is that closeness asking of you?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Uncertainty
What is the Left Angle Cross of Uncertainty?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 8, 14, 55 and 59. Its theme is a contribution and a craft worked out through relationships, alongside moods and appetites that come in waves.
Which Uncertainty rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 8/14 | 55/59 is Uncertainty 1, with Contribution as your Personality Sun. 14/8 | 59/55 is Uncertainty 2, with Power Skills as your Personality Sun.
Why is Gate 8, Contribution, the voice of Uncertainty?
Gate 8 is the only Throat Gate in Uncertainty, and its hexagram is Holding Together. The other three sit in the Sacral twice and the Solar Plexus, all motor Centers. So the cross has one way to say things out loud and three sources of drive behind it.
Whose Gates complete the Channels Uncertainty starts?
Gates 1, 2, 39 and 6. People with the Cross of The Sphinx hold both 1 and 2, so they can close Channels 1-8 and 2-14 with you. Gate 6 is in the Cross of Eden and Gate 39 is in the Cross of Tension.
Which profiles make this a Left Angle cross?
A 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 or 6/3 Profile. With the same Gates and a 4/1 Profile, rotation 1 becomes the Juxtaposition Cross of Contribution. The Gates are the same; the Profile decides the angle.
Which quarter of the wheel is my Sun in?
In rotation 1 your Personality Sun is Gate 8, in the Civilization quarter, purpose through form. In rotation 2 it is Gate 14, in the Mutation quarter, purpose through transformation.
