Left Angle Cross of Defiance
The Left Angle Cross of Defiance is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 1, 2, 4 and 49. It is about holding your own direction and your own principles while other people lean on them, and learning who you are by what you will and will not go along with.
Simple way to think about it: Picture a stream that meets a boulder. The water does not stop being water, and it does not push the stone away. It takes its shape from what it will not go through. Defiance works like that: you find out what you stand for by meeting the people and rules that press against it.

The two rotations of the Defiance cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Defiance 1 (2/1 | 49/4)
With The Direction of the Self as your conscious Sun, the question of where you are headed comes first, and Self-Expression, the conscious Earth, gives it a creative voice. Principles and Formulization work underneath on the Design side. This rotation sits in the Civilization quarter, purpose fulfilled through Form.
The Defiance 2 (1/2 | 4/49)
Here Self-Expression is the conscious Sun: you are here to create as yourself, and The Direction of the Self, the conscious Earth, steadies the course. On the Design side Formulization leads and Principles supports it. This rotation sits in the Mutation quarter, purpose fulfilled through Transformation.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 2: The Direction of the Self
Gate 2, The Direction of the Self, sits in the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Its hexagram is The Receptive. It completes Channel 2-14, The Beat, with Gate 14 in the Sacral, so your sense of direction is tied to the energy that powers it. Its lines include Intuition, Genius and Patience, and end in Fixation. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of where you are headed. As an Earth it keeps that heading steady when others offer a different one.
Gate 1: Self-Expression
Gate 1, Self-Expression, also sits in the G Center, and its hexagram is The Creative. It completes Channel 1-8, Inspiration, with Gate 8 in the Throat, so a creative current is built to reach speech. Its lines run from Creation is independent of will to Objectivity, with Aloneness as the medium of creativity in the middle. As a Sun it makes your purpose the act of creating as yourself. As an Earth it grounds another theme in work that only you could have made.
Gate 49: Principles
Gate 49, Principles, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves, which is both a motor and an awareness Center. Its hexagram is Revolution. It completes Channel 19-49, Synthesis, with Gate 19 in the Root. Its lines move from The law of necessity and The last resort to Platform and Organization. It sits on the Design side in both rotations, so your principles may form below awareness and show in what you cannot accept before you can say why.
Gate 4: Formulization
Gate 4, Formulization, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts, opinions and certainty. Its hexagram is Youthful Folly. It completes Channel 4-63, Logic, with Gate 63 in the Head. Its lines run from Pleasure and Acceptance to The Liar, Seduction and Excess. It also sits on the Design side in both rotations, so the mind behind your answers works below awareness, and others may meet your formulas before you know you have made them.
The conscious side is all identity
Whichever rotation you carry, your conscious Sun and Earth are Gates 1 and 2, and both belong to the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and the sense of correct place. Nothing on the conscious side of this cross is about thinking or feeling. It is about who you are and which way you face.
That is a plain but heavy theme. You are likely to know, early, what does not feel like you, even if you cannot name what does. The Left Angle then works that out through other people: their ideas of who you should be become the thing your identity learns against.
A mind and an emotional wave under the identity
The two Design Gates are in the Ajna and the Solar Plexus. The Ajna is mental awareness. The Solar Plexus is the only motor among the four Gates and also an awareness Center, so it holds drive and feeling together.
These two sit below your conscious choices. Principles gives you strong feelings about what is acceptable, and Formulization turns them into answers. Because both are on the Design side, other people often hear your position before you do. When someone says you sound very sure, they may be hearing these two Gates, not a decision you made.
Three circuits, none of them shared
The Channels these Gates can complete belong to three different circuits. Channels 1-8 and 2-14 are Individual, in the Knowing sub-circuit. Channel 4-63 is Collective, in the Understanding sub-circuit. Channel 19-49 is Tribal, in the Ego sub-circuit.
So no single style of energy runs the whole cross. Your direction and creativity come from the Individual side, your questions and answers from the Collective side, and your principles from the Tribal side. Each needs a partner Gate, in your chart or in another person, and meeting that partner is where the Left Angle shows up.
Why the Defiance is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Defiance that means your direction and principles are not tested in private. They are tested by the people who want something different from you, and they get clearer each time. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 2.5 means Gate 2, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Defiance cross.
Defiance 1: Personality Sun in Gate 2, The Direction of the Self
| 2.1 Intuition | You sense your direction before you can explain it, and you hold to it while others ask for reasons. |
|---|---|
| 2.2 Genius | Your gift for finding the way is natural and unforced, and it shows most when nobody is watching. |
| 2.3 Patience | You wait out pressure to commit early, and your direction firms up through the delay rather than despite it. |
| 2.4 Secretiveness | You keep your real direction private until the time is right, and others see it only later. |
| 2.5 Intelligent application | You apply your direction where it will work, and others notice because it fits the problem in front of them. |
| 2.6 Fixation | You can fix on one heading so firmly that you stop hearing the people trying to steer you elsewhere. |
Defiance 2: Personality Sun in Gate 1, Self-Expression
| 1.1 Creation is independent of will | Your best work arrives on its own schedule, and pushing harder does not bring it sooner. |
|---|---|
| 1.2 Love is light | You treat love as light, something that shows what is there, and people feel seen in your company. |
| 1.3 The energy to sustain creative work | You have the energy to keep a creative project going long after others have lost interest. |
| 1.4 Aloneness as the medium of creativity | You create best alone, and the cross asks you to bring the finished work back to other people. |
| 1.5 The energy to attract society | You have the energy to draw society toward what you make, so people come to you for it. |
| 1.6 Objectivity | You see your own work from a distance, and that objectivity lets you let go of what does not serve. |
Living the Defiance cross
At work
Defiance people often do their best work when they are allowed to set the direction and the standard. A role that hands you rules you had no part in tends to wear you down. Look for work where your principles are welcome, and say early which lines you will not cross, so colleagues hear it as a standard and not as a surprise.
In relationships
In relationships the cross works through the other person, so who you are close to shapes how your direction and principles show up. A partner who respects your pace lets you be clear without being hard. Notice when holding your ground turns into refusing to listen; the line between standing firm and shutting out is the one this cross keeps testing.
In decisions
Defiance gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Your sense of direction can feel certain and still be wrong about timing. You do not have to answer pressure at once.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your direction and principles follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Defiance cross is misread
"Defiance means I am meant to rebel"
"Two Gates in the G Center means I always know where I am going"
"Left Angle means my principles should bend to the group"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 2: Where are you headed right now, and who in your life is asking you to head somewhere else?
- Gate 1: What have you made recently that only you could have made, and who has seen it?
- Gate 49: Which principle did you hold this month when it would have been easier to let it go?
- Gate 4: What answer did you give lately that surprised you, and where do you think it came from?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Defiance
What is the Left Angle Cross of Defiance?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 1, 2, 4 and 49. Its theme is holding your own direction and principles while other people press on them, worked out through relationships rather than alone.
Which Defiance rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 2/1 | 49/4 is Defiance 1, with The Direction of the Self as your Personality Sun. 1/2 | 4/49 is Defiance 2, with Self-Expression as your Personality Sun.
Does Defiance give me a defined Channel?
No. None of the four Gates make a Channel with each other. Each one needs a partner Gate: 8 for Gate 1, 14 for Gate 2, 63 for Gate 4 and 19 for Gate 49. So Defiance does not fix your Type or your Authority.
How do Formulization and Principles share the Design side of Defiance?
Gates 4 and 49 are opposites and form the Design pair. Formulization is an Ajna Gate with the hexagram Youthful Folly, and Principles is a Solar Plexus Gate with the hexagram Revolution. In rotation 1 Principles is the Design Sun and Formulization the Design Earth, and in rotation 2 they trade places.
Why do the two rotations sit in different quarters?
The quarter follows the conscious Sun. The Direction of the Self leads Defiance 1 in the Civilization quarter, purpose fulfilled through Form. Self-Expression leads Defiance 2 in the Mutation quarter, purpose fulfilled through Transformation.
What do Gates 1 and 2 have in common in Defiance?
Both sit in the G Center, and each is the other's opposite on the wheel. In Defiance they always fill the conscious Sun and Earth, in either order, so your conscious purpose is always about identity and direction.
