The Tribal Circuit in Human Design
The Tribal circuit carries support. It is the part of the system about the people you are actually responsible for. Family, business partners, the small group whose survival is tied to yours.
Seven of the 36 channels belong to it, the smallest of the three circuits. Its currency is the agreement. Something is given, something is expected back, and that deal is what holds a group together.
Tribal energy is where money, care, loyalty and touch live. It is the oldest material in the system and the most practical. Generate your free chart to see which channels you carry.
The short version: Tribal energy runs on the bargain. That sounds cold and it is the opposite. The bargain is how a group survives, and Tribal people are the ones who track whether it is kept.
What the Tribal circuit does
Tribal energy exists to keep a specific group going. Not humanity, and not the self. The handful of people whose wellbeing is tied to yours.
That focus is what separates it from the other two circuits. Collective energy produces things for everyone, including strangers. Individual energy produces things through one person regardless of who wants them. Tribal energy is narrower and more practical. Who is in this group, what do they need, and is the deal fair.
This is the circuit where the material business of living gets handled. Resources, agreements, care of children, keeping a family or a firm going across generations. None of it is glamorous and all of it is load-bearing.
Tribal people often carry more than they were asked to, because they notice what is needed before anyone says it.
The bargain, and why it matters
Tribal energy is transactional, which people find uncomfortable to hear. Worth saying plainly.
Support in this circuit is not unconditional. It is exchanged. You look after this, I look after that, and both of us know where we stand. When the terms are clear the deal is steady and generous. When they are vague it sours.
Nearly every Tribal problem traces back to an agreement that was never spoken. Someone gave more than they meant to, expected something back that was never promised, and resented it when nothing came. The energy was fine. The bargain was never made.
This is the single most useful thing to know about Tribal definition. Say the terms out loud. It feels awkward with family, and it saves years of quiet score-keeping.
The Ego sub-circuit
5 channels
Ego channels carry willpower, resources and material continuity. This is where promises are made and where the ability to keep them lives.
People with Ego definition have real willpower, and it is finite. It works in bursts with real rest between them, so steady pressure wears them out faster than it does others. A promise made from Ego energy is meant to be kept, and breaking one costs these people more than it costs most.
19-49 Synthesis
Sensitivity to needs and the power of rejection.
21-45 Money
Control of resources for the tribe.
26-44 Surrender
Conditioning the tribe through memory and instinct.
32-54 Transformation
The drive for material transformation and continuity.
37-40 Community
Creating community through bargaining and agreements.
The Defense sub-circuit
2 channels
Defense is the oldest energy in the system. Two channels concerned with intimacy, reproduction and the protection of the young.
This is body-level rather than mental. It works below decision-making, so it can feel like something happening to you rather than something you chose.
6-59 Mating
Creating intimacy and breaking down barriers.
27-50 Preservation
Preservation of tribal values and nurturing.
Living with Tribal definition
Make the agreement explicit
The most useful habit available to you. Say what you are giving and what you expect, before you give it. Awkward once, and it removes the resentment that would build for years.
Guard the willpower
Ego energy is real and it runs out. It works in bursts with proper rest between them. Treating it as a constant supply is the fastest way to burn out on people you care about.
Know who is in the group
Tribal energy is for a specific set of people. Giving it to everyone is not generosity. It is a mistake, and it drains the support your actual group depends on.
Say no earlier
You notice what people need before they ask, so it is easy to be halfway into helping before you decided to. Your Authority still governs the yes.
The Tribal circuit is the least fashionable of the three and the one everything else depends on. Mutation and shared knowledge do not survive unless someone handles resources, agreements and the people in front of them.

FAQ: The Tribal Circuit
What is the Tribal circuit in Human Design?
The Tribal circuit carries support for a specific group: family, partners, the people whose survival is tied to yours. Seven of the 36 channels belong to it, making it the smallest circuit.
What are the Tribal sub-circuits?
Ego, five channels carrying willpower, resources and material continuity. Defense, two channels concerned with intimacy, reproduction and protecting the young.
Why is Tribal energy described as transactional?
Because support in this circuit is exchanged rather than unconditional. Something is given and something is expected back. When the terms are clear the arrangement works. When they are unspoken, resentment builds.
What does the Ego centre have to do with this?
Most Ego sub-circuit channels connect to the Heart or Ego centre, which is where willpower and self worth live. It is defined in only about a third of people.
Does Tribal definition mean I am family-oriented?
Not necessarily in the conventional sense. The group can be a business, a team or a partnership. What matters is that it is a specific set of people rather than everyone.
Why do I keep over-giving?
Tribal energy notices need before it is expressed, which makes it easy to start helping before deciding to. Making the agreement explicit, and running the decision through your Authority, is what stops it.
