Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx

The Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 13, 7, 1 and 2, four of the eight Gates in the G Center. Its theme is direction: listening, leading, expressing and finding the way forward, lived through your own experience rather than through anyone else's plan.

Simple way to think about it: The Sphinx is a compass set into your chest. It does not walk for you and it does not choose the trip, but whenever you stop and check it, it points somewhere, and the people around you start to take their bearings from where it points.

Match them to the rotations below to see which of the four you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Sphinx cross on the BodyGraph

All four Sphinx Gates sit inside one shape, the diamond in the middle of the chart. That is unusual: most crosses spread their Gates over two, three or four Centers. Here the whole purpose lives in the Center of identity and direction, and each Gate points out of it along one Channel.

Initiation: Purpose fulfilled through Mind.

With the Listener as your conscious Sun, direction starts with hearing people out. You collect stories and experience, and the role in a group (Gate 7) grounds it. The Design side runs Self-Expression and the Direction of the Self underneath, so others often see a sense of direction in you before you claim one.

Here the Direction of the Self is the conscious theme. You tend to know the way before you can explain it, and the conscious Earth in Gate 1 asks you to express it in your own style. Listening and the role in a group run on the Design side, quietly shaping who follows you.

Duality: Purpose fulfilled through Bonding.

With the Role of the Self in Interaction as your Sun, direction becomes leadership: the question is who steers, and how. Gate 13 grounds that role in what you have heard from others. Underneath, the Design side keeps a steady inner direction and a need to express it, which others may read as natural authority.

Self-Expression leads in this version. You show the way by being visibly yourself, and the conscious Earth in Gate 2 gives that expression a heading. The Design side listens and takes a role in groups without much thought, so people may trust you to represent them before you have offered.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 13: The Listener

Gate 13, the Listener, takes in what people tell it and keeps it. People often find themselves confiding in someone with this Gate without quite knowing why. The point is not to fix their story; it is to hold it until it becomes useful as a record of what has happened, so the group can learn from the past. As a Sun, it makes listening the core of how you find your way. As an Earth, it keeps you grounded in experience instead of theory. Its Channel runs to Gate 33 in the Throat, where what was heard can finally be said, but only after a period of retreat.

Gate 7: The Role of the Self in Interaction

Gate 7, the Role of the Self in Interaction, is about leadership in a group: who is guiding, and which direction they are taking everyone. Its six lines read like a list of leadership styles, from the Authoritarian to the Administrator, and one of them, the Abdicator, is about knowing when to step aside. As a Sun, it makes your purpose a question of how direction is given to others. As an Earth, it gives your listening or your expression a place to land. Its Channel goes to Gate 31 in the Throat, the Gate of Influence, where leadership finds its voice.

Gate 1: Self-Expression

Gate 1, Self-Expression, is the creative drive to be exactly who you are, in your own way, without copying anyone. Its first line says creation is independent of will: you cannot force it, only allow it. As a Sun, your direction is shown by example, through work or a way of living that is obviously yours. As an Earth, it keeps another theme honest by asking whether it is really you. Its Channel runs to Gate 8 in the Throat, where individual style becomes a contribution others can see and follow.

Gate 2: The Direction of the Self

Gate 2, the Direction of the Self, is the inner sense of where life is heading, held without needing proof. It is receptive: it knows the direction, then waits for the energy to move. That energy comes through its Channel to Gate 14 in the Sacral, the resources and skills that power a direction. As a Sun, you are the one who knows the way, sometimes before anyone asks. As an Earth, it gives quiet steadiness to listening, leading or expressing, so they head somewhere instead of circling.

All four Gates in one Center: the G Center

The G Center holds identity, direction and love, and it has eight Gates. Those eight are split exactly between two Right Angle crosses: The Sphinx takes Gates 1, 2, 7 and 13, and the Cross of The Vessel of Love takes Gates 10, 15, 25 and 46. The Sphinx is the direction half of the G Center, the Vessel of Love is the love half.

Having the whole cross in one Center gives the purpose a single focus. There is no motor among the four Gates and no awareness Center, so the cross does not generate its own drive and does not do its own sensing. It is a sense of bearing. Whether it can act on that bearing depends on what else in the chart connects to it, which is why the Channels below matter.

Three Channels to the Throat, one to the Sacral

Three of the four Gates reach for the Throat: Gate 1 through the Channel of Inspiration, Gate 7 through the Alpha, Gate 13 through the Prodigal. The Throat is where everything that leaves you passes through, so this cross keeps pressing toward being said or shown. A Sphinx person who never gets to speak about direction often feels unseen.

The fourth Gate, Gate 2, points the other way, down to the Sacral and its life force. The Channel of The Beat turns a sense of direction into the energy to follow it. If you have Gate 14 defined, or meet people who do, notice how much easier your direction becomes to move on.

Two circuits in one cross: Individual and Collective

Gates 1 and 2 feed Channels in the Individual circuit, the Knowing group: direction that arrives complete, on its own timing, and is hard to explain. Gates 7 and 13 feed Channels in the Collective circuit: Understanding through the Alpha, and Sensing through the Prodigal. Those are about patterns and shared experience, things meant to be passed on to others.

So the Sphinx holds both sides of direction. One side knows where to go and cannot always say why. The other side has listened, compared and led, and can explain the way to a group. Which side you live consciously depends on your rotation, and many people with this cross recognize both in themselves at different times.

Why the Sphinx is a Right Angle cross

A Right Angle cross is a personal destiny: the purpose works out through your own experience, and other people are not the point of it. For the Sphinx that matters, because a cross about leading and listening can look like it exists for others. It does not. You find direction for yourself first, and others benefit from following someone who has. The Right Angle goes with seven Profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6. If your Profile is one of these, your cross is a Right Angle cross.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.4 means Gate 13, Line 4. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Sphinx cross.

Sphinx 1: Personality Sun in Gate 13, The Listener
13.1 EmpathyListening starts with feeling what others feel, so your direction grows out of real sympathy rather than opinion.
13.2 BigotryYou hear best inside the circle you trust, and the work is to notice when that circle narrows what you are willing to hear.
13.3 PessimismYou hear the hard parts of people's stories first, which can make your sense of direction cautious but rarely naive.
13.4 FatigueListening takes energy, and your direction holds best when you stop taking in stories you cannot carry.
13.5 The SaviourPeople bring you their problems hoping you will lead them out, and you choose which hopes to accept.
13.6 The OptimistYou listen for what is still possible in a story, which keeps the direction you give hopeful.
Sphinx 2: Personality Sun in Gate 2, The Direction of the Self
2.1 IntuitionYour sense of direction arrives as a quiet hunch long before it is a plan.
2.2 GeniusYour direction is a natural gift that others recognize and ask for, often before you have offered it.
2.3 PatienceThe direction is clear but its timing is not, and waiting for the resources is part of following it.
2.4 SecretivenessYou tend to keep your direction to yourself until the right people are in place to hear it.
2.5 Intelligent applicationOthers expect you to apply your sense of direction to their practical problems, and you are judged on the result.
2.6 FixationOnce you see a direction you hold to it firmly, so checking it against new information keeps it alive.
Sphinx 3: Personality Sun in Gate 7, The Role of the Self in Interaction
7.1 AuthoritarianYou lead by setting a clear line and expecting it to be followed, and the cross asks that the line be a fair one.
7.2 The DemocratYou lead by giving people a voice, so your direction carries the weight of agreement.
7.3 The AnarchistYou question whoever is leading, and your direction often starts as a challenge to the old one.
7.4 The AbdicatorYou know when to step back from leading, and stepping back at the right moment is its own kind of direction.
7.5 The GeneralIn a crisis people look to you to take command, and the direction you give is judged by how it turns out.
7.6 The AdministratorYou lead from structure and organization, shaping direction through the systems people work within.
Sphinx 4: Personality Sun in Gate 1, Self-Expression
1.1 Creation is independent of willYour expression arrives when it is ready, and forcing it pulls you off course.
1.2 Love is lightYour expression is warmth others are drawn to, and the direction you show spreads through affection.
1.3 The energy to sustain creative workYour expression needs stamina, so the direction you show is proved over time, not in a moment.
1.4 Aloneness as the medium of creativityYou create best alone, and the direction you show comes out of the time you spend apart.
1.5 The energy to attract societyYour expression draws people in, and the direction you show reaches further than you expect.
1.6 ObjectivityYou can step back from your own work and see it plainly, which makes the direction you show clearer.

Living the Sphinx cross

At work

Sphinx people are often the ones a team turns to when it has lost the thread: what are we doing, and why? Work goes best when you have room to listen first and then say where things should go, instead of being handed a direction and told to execute it. Roles that combine hearing people out with setting a course, from editor to team lead to mentor, tend to fit.

In relationships

In close relationships the Sphinx can quietly become the navigator, the one who knows where the couple or family is heading. That is a gift until it turns into deciding for everyone. Listening is half of this cross, so let the people close to you tell their side before you say which way to go.

In decisions

A sense of direction is not the same as a decision. The cross tells you where you are heading in life, not whether to take this job or move this year.

Use your Type and your inner Authority for each choice, and let the Sphinx show you whether, looking back, those choices kept you on course. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Sphinx cross is misread

"The Sphinx means I must lead"

Gate 7 is about the role of the self in a group, and its lines include stepping back. The cross carries direction, which does not always mean being in charge.

"All four Gates are mine to use at will"

Two of the four are on your Design side and run below awareness. You live them, but you may only see them in hindsight or through other people.

"The cross overrides my Type"

Your Type and Authority still decide how you move. The Sphinx describes where life tends to lead; it does not replace waiting, responding or informing.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 13: Whose story have you been carrying that is ready to be told, and to whom?
  2. Gate 7: In the groups you belong to, who is setting the direction, and is it the direction you would choose?
  3. Gate 1: What did you make or do recently that could only have come from you?
  4. Gate 2: Where do you already know you are heading, even though you cannot prove it yet?

Each one holds a Gate that completes a Channel with this cross.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Sphinx rotation you carry, your Sun line, and how the cross works with your Type, Authority and Centers. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx

What is the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx?

It is one of the 16 Right Angle Incarnation Crosses in Human Design, made of Gates 13, 7, 1 and 2, all in the G Center. Its theme is direction: listening, leading, expressing and knowing the way forward, lived through your own experience.

Which Sphinx rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 13/7 | 1/2 is The Sphinx 1, 2/1 | 13/7 is The Sphinx 2, 7/13 | 2/1 is The Sphinx 3, and 1/2 | 7/13 is The Sphinx 4. The first number is your Personality Sun.

What do the numbers (13/7 | 1/2) mean?

They are four Gates. Before the bar are your Personality Sun and Earth, the conscious side. After the bar are your Design Sun and Earth, the unconscious side. In 13/7 | 1/2, your Personality Sun is in Gate 13 and your Design Sun is in Gate 1.

Why are all four Sphinx Gates in the G Center?

Because Gates 1 and 2, and Gates 13 and 7, sit opposite each other on the wheel, and all four belong to the G Center. The G Center's other four Gates, 10, 15, 25 and 46, form the Cross of The Vessel of Love.

Is the Sphinx a cross of leadership?

Partly. Gate 7 is the Gate of leadership in a group, and the Channel of The Alpha it completes is about leading. But the cross is about direction as a whole, and two of its Gates are about listening and knowing, not about being in charge.

Does my Incarnation Cross change during my life?

No. It is fixed by your Sun and Earth at birth and about 88 days before. What changes is how well you live it, which follows from making decisions with your Strategy and Authority.
