Right Angle Cross of Tension

The Right Angle Cross of Tension is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 21, 48, 38 and 39: the Hunter/Huntress, Depth, the Fighter and Provocation. Its theme is friction put to good use, the push that comes from opposition, lived through your own experience rather than anyone else's plan.

Simple way to think about it: Tension is the string on a bow. Loose, it does nothing. Pulled tight, it stores the force that sends the arrow somewhere. The cross is about learning how much pull you can hold, and when to let go.

Look for the line that reads Right Angle Cross of Tension. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (21/48 | 38/39). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the four you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Tension cross on the BodyGraph

Tension is built from two pairs of opposites. Gates 21 and 48 face each other across the wheel, and so do Gates 38 and 39. Your conscious Sun and Earth are always one of these pairs, and your unconscious Sun and Earth are always the other, so every rotation holds a pull in each direction.

Personality Earth
Gate 48 Depth
Design Sun
Gate 38 The Fighter
Design Earth
Gate 39 Provocation
Quarter
Initiation: Purpose fulfilled through Mind.

With the Hunter/Huntress as your conscious Sun, you meet tension by going after what you want. Depth in Gate 48 sits under it as your conscious Earth, a quiet check on whether you are ready. The Design side runs the Fighter and Provocation, so friction finds you even when you are not looking for it.

Gate 48 Depth
Quarter
Civilization: Purpose fulfilled through Form.

Here Provocation is the conscious theme. You notice where things are stuck and say so, and the Fighter in Gate 38 as your Earth gives you something to stand for. Underneath, the Design side carries the Hunter/Huntress and Depth, a steady drive to pursue and a depth others sense in you.

Personality Earth
Gate 21 The Hunter/Huntress
Design Sun
Gate 39 Provocation
Design Earth
Gate 38 The Fighter
Quarter
Duality: Purpose fulfilled through Bonding.

With Depth as your conscious Sun, the question is how deep you are willing to go, and the Hunter/Huntress as your Earth gives the depth a target. The Design side carries Provocation and the Fighter, which means people may find you more challenging than you feel.

The Tension 4 (38/39 | 48/21)

Personality Sun
Gate 38 The Fighter
Personality Earth
Gate 39 Provocation
Design Sun
Gate 48 Depth
Design Earth
Gate 21 The Hunter/Huntress
Quarter
Mutation: Purpose fulfilled through Transformation.

The Fighter leads in this version. You know what you will not accept, and Provocation as your conscious Earth turns that into action. Depth and the Hunter/Huntress run underneath, so a patient, hungry pursuit often shows up in your life before you have named it.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 21: The Hunter/Huntress

Gate 21, the Hunter/Huntress, sits in the Heart and its hexagram is Biting Through. It is the will to take hold of what is yours and refuse to let go of it halfway. As a Sun, you go after control of your own territory, work or resources. As an Earth, it keeps another theme from drifting by asking whether you actually mean it. Its Channel is the Money Line, 21-45, which runs to Gate 45, the Gatherer, in the Throat. Will meets voice there, and it is the one Channel of this cross that carries a motor straight to the Throat.

Gate 48: Depth

Gate 48, Depth, sits in the Spleen and its hexagram is The Well. A well is only useful if you keep going down to the water. This Gate is the sense that you can always dig deeper, and the worry that you have not dug enough yet. As a Sun, your purpose is built on depth over speed. As an Earth, it steadies the Gate 21 drive with a sense of how much you know. Its Channel is The Wavelength, 16-48, which reaches Gate 16, Skills, in the Throat, where depth becomes talent you can show.

Gate 38: The Fighter

Gate 38, the Fighter, sits in the Root and its hexagram is Opposition. It is the drive to find something worth standing against, and then to stand against it. As a Sun, your purpose is shaped by what you will not give up. As an Earth, it gives another theme some backbone. Its Channel is Struggle, 28-38, which runs from the Root to Gate 28, the Game Player, in the Spleen. A struggle only feels worth it if it means something, and the Spleen end of the Channel is where that question gets asked.

Gate 39: Provocation

Gate 39, Provocation, sits in the Root and its hexagram is Obstruction. Where Gate 38 stands against, Gate 39 stirs things up so that something moves. As a Sun, you are the one who pokes at the stuck place, sometimes on purpose and sometimes just by being there. As an Earth, it adds a spark to a quieter theme. Its Channel is Emoting, 39-55, which runs from the Root to Gate 55, Spirit, in the Solar Plexus. Provocation looks for a feeling to meet, and that is where it finds its answer.

Two pairs of opposites, one on each side of you

Every cross is built from two opposite pairs, and in Tension both pairs pull hard. Gate 21 and Gate 48 face each other on the wheel, and so do Gate 38 and Gate 39. Your Personality Sun and Earth are always opposites, and so are your Design Sun and Earth, so each side of you carries one of these pairs.

In the first and third rotations the conscious pair is Gates 21 and 48, and the Design pair is Gates 38 and 39. In the second and fourth it is the other way around. That is a useful way to read your own rotation. If the Hunter/Huntress and Depth are conscious, you may feel the drive and the doubt as your own story. If the Fighter and Provocation are conscious, the friction is the part you notice, and the hunger and patience run quietly underneath.

Two Gates in the Root, the Center of pressure

The Root is the Center of adrenaline and stress, the push to begin, and it is the only pressure Center among these Gates. Tension puts two of its four Gates there: the Fighter in Gate 38 and Provocation in Gate 39. No other Center holds more than one.

So the cross leans toward pressure, with two of its four Gates in the Root. This is not the same as being stressed. It means your purpose is tied to the way pressure moves through you: where it builds, what you do with it, and whether you let it push you into things too fast. The two Root Gates reach different places. Channel 28-38 runs to the Spleen, and Channel 39-55 runs to the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotional waves. Pressure plus a wave can feel enormous, and it passes.

The Heart and the Spleen, both pointing at the Throat

The other two Gates sit in different kinds of Center. Gate 21 is in the Heart, the smallest motor, which holds willpower and worth. Gate 48 is in the Spleen, an awareness Center for instinct and fear that speaks once and in the present tense. One is a will to act. The other is a sense of whether you are ready.

Both reach the Throat. The Money Line carries the Heart to Gate 45, and The Wavelength carries the Spleen to Gate 16. That is a lot of this cross waiting to be said or shown. Notice too that the four Channels belong to three different circuits: Tribal for Gate 21, Individual for Gates 38 and 39, and Collective for Gate 48. Tension is not one story. It is a drive to protect what is yours, an independent streak, and a deep need to understand, all pulling together.

Why the Tension is a Right Angle cross

A Right Angle cross is a personal destiny: the purpose works out through your own experience, and other people are not the point of it. For Tension that matters, because a cross about friction can look as if it is about winning against others. It is not. The tension is yours to hold and learn from, and any good it does for others comes after. The Right Angle goes with seven Profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6. If your Profile is one of these, your cross is a Right Angle cross.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.4 means Gate 13, Line 4. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Tension cross.

Tension 1: Personality Sun in Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress
21.1 WarningA warning from experience keeps your drive to take control from running ahead of what you can handle.
21.2 Might is rightYou believe the strongest hand should lead, and the cross asks you to check whether that is true for you.
21.3 PowerlessnessYou sometimes feel powerless in the hunt, and that feeling teaches you which kinds of control are worth wanting.
21.4 StrategyYou pursue with strategy, picking the moment and the ground instead of charging in as soon as you want something.
21.5 ObjectivityYou look at control with detachment, which lets you hold authority without needing to prove you have it.
21.6 ChaosYou see chaos in how control gets used, and your hunt is to bring clear order to it.
Tension 2: Personality Sun in Gate 39, Provocation
39.1 DisengagementYou disengage when provoking will not help, which keeps you from stirring up trouble for its own sake.
39.2 ConfrontationYou confront directly, and the people close to you hear it when something is stuck.
39.3 ResponsibilityYou take responsibility for the effect of your provocation, so it lands as a challenge and not as an attack.
39.4 TemperanceYou show restraint, and your provocation works because you choose the moment instead of reacting.
39.5 Single-mindednessYou stay single-minded about the one stuck thing, which can make you tireless and sometimes hard to talk out of it.
39.6 The TroubleshooterYou act as the troubleshooter, the person people call when something is stuck and nobody knows why.
Tension 3: Personality Sun in Gate 48, Depth
48.1 InsignificanceA feeling of insignificance sends you digging deeper, and the depth you find becomes your real standing.
48.2 DegeneracyYou notice what has degenerated, and you can accept a flawed foundation without hiding the flaw.
48.3 IncommunicadoYour depth is hard to put into words, so you may sit on what you know until someone asks.
48.4 RestructuringYou rebuild your sense of depth by restructuring it, which can make you rethink what you thought you had mastered.
48.5 ActionYour depth shows up as action, and people judge it by whether it works in practice.
48.6 Self-fulfillmentYou find your fulfillment in having drawn deeply, and you can rest once the well is full.
Tension 4: Personality Sun in Gate 38, The Fighter
38.1 QualificationYou qualify your fights, standing against only what you can truthfully say matters to you.
38.2 PolitenessYou fight politely, and your opposition has more effect because it arrives with courtesy.
38.3 AllianceYou form alliances, and the cross asks who truly stands with you when the struggle gets long.
38.4 InvestigationYou investigate before you stand, so your opposition rests on what you have actually checked.
38.5 AlienationYou can feel set apart by what you fight for, and that distance is a cost you carry.
38.6 MisunderstandingYou may be misunderstood for what you oppose, and patience with that is part of the work.

Living the Tension cross

At work

People with Tension are often the ones who find the weak point in a plan, the stuck process or the unspoken argument. Work goes best when there is a real problem to take on and room to go deep on it, instead of a calm routine with nothing to push against. Roles that reward persistence and troubleshooting tend to fit, such as research, negotiation, repair, quality control or building something from nothing. Watch the habit of creating a fight just to have something to work on.

In relationships

In close relationships the friction in this cross can show up as arguments that arrive fast and leave a mark. Learn to tell a real disagreement from pressure that has nowhere else to go. Say what is bothering you earlier, in smaller words. Partners often relax once they see that your intensity is not an attack on them. They will also tell you when you go too deep, so listen when they do. Depth built with someone feels better than depth done alone.

In decisions

Tension is not a reason to decide. Pressure in the Root can feel like urgency, and urgency can feel like an answer. The cross tells you the pressure is part of your purpose, not that this job, move or argument is the right one to say yes to.

Use your Type and your inner Authority for each choice, and let Tension show you whether, looking back, the pressure you took on was yours to carry. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Tension cross is misread

"Tension means my life will be full of conflict"

The cross holds opposition and pressure as themes, but a theme is not a forecast. What you do with the friction decides whether it becomes conflict or something you use.

"I have to fight to prove myself"

Gate 38 is the Fighter, but its Channel runs to a Spleen Gate that asks whether the struggle means something. A purpose built on standing for something is not a need to win.

"Depth means I should already know it all"

Gate 48, Depth, starts with the lines Insignificance and Degeneracy and reaches Self-fulfillment only on line 6. The depth in Tension is something you build, line by line, not something you are handed. Feeling short of it at the start is part of the Gate, not a sign that you missed your cross.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 21: What are you trying to get hold of right now, and are you sure you want it?
  2. Gate 48: Where have you stopped digging, and what would you find if you kept going?
  3. Gate 38: What are you standing against, and is it worth the energy it costs?
  4. Gate 39: What is stuck around you that only someone willing to stir it up would move?

Each one holds a Gate that completes a Channel with this cross.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Tension rotation you carry, your Sun line, and how the cross works with your Type, Authority and Centers. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Right Angle Cross of Tension

What is the Right Angle Cross of Tension?

It is one of the 16 Right Angle Incarnation Crosses in Human Design, made of Gates 21, 48, 38 and 39. Its theme is friction used well: the drive to take hold, the depth to understand, the will to oppose and the nerve to provoke, lived through your own experience.

Which Tension rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 21/48 | 38/39 is Tension 1, 39/38 | 21/48 is Tension 2, 48/21 | 39/38 is Tension 3, and 38/39 | 48/21 is Tension 4. The first number is your Personality Sun.

Why are two of the Tension Gates in the Root?

Gate 38, the Fighter, and Gate 39, Provocation, both belong to the Root, and they are opposites on the wheel. The Root is the Center of pressure and drive, which is why this cross is so tied to how you carry pressure.

Why does the last line of Gate 39, Provocation, read The Troubleshooter?

Gate 39's lines start with Disengagement and Confrontation, then pass through Responsibility, Temperance and Single-mindedness before The Troubleshooter. The Gate begins by stepping back and pushing, and ends by dealing with the problem. In Tension, Gate 39 sits in the Root beside Gate 38, so pressure ends in a practical job.

Do all four Tension Gates open to the Throat?

No. Gates 21 and 48 do, through the Money Line and The Wavelength. The two Root Gates go elsewhere: Gate 38 to the Spleen and Gate 39 to the Solar Plexus. So only half of this cross reaches the Throat directly.

How does Tension connect to the Cross of Planning?

Gate 16, the partner of Gate 48 in The Wavelength, belongs to the Cross of Planning. So someone with Gate 16 in their chart completes a Channel with a Tension Gate. Gates alone do not make a Channel; both ends must be present.
