HUMAN DESIGN HD • INCARNATION CROSS

Left Angle Cross of Endeavor

The Left Angle Cross of Endeavor is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54. It is about sustained effort shared with other people: willpower in the Heart, a deep well of instinct in the Spleen, and two Root Gates that begin things and climb.

Simple way to think about it: An endeavor is a piece of work you cannot finish in an afternoon. It takes a plan, steady effort and people who stay with you when the early excitement is gone. This cross has the same shape: it is less about one brilliant push than about what you keep going, and who keeps going beside you.

Look for the line that reads Left Angle Cross of Endeavor. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (21/48 | 54/53). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Endeavor cross on the BodyGraph

Look for three Centers. The Heart, the small motor on the right of the chart, holds Gate 21. The Spleen on the left holds Gate 48. The Root at the base holds both Design Gates, 53 and 54. Gates 21 and 48 are also a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Tension, and Gates 53 and 54 are a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Penetration.

With The Hunter/Huntress as your conscious Sun, the purpose leads with going after something, and Depth, the conscious Earth, asks whether there is enough underneath to keep going. On the Design side Ambition leads and Beginnings grounds it, so a quiet drive to climb sits beneath the chase. This rotation falls in the Initiation quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Mind.

Here Depth is the conscious Sun: you are measuring how deep a thing goes before you commit, and The Hunter/Huntress, the conscious Earth, supplies the willingness to pursue it. On the Design side Beginnings leads and Ambition grounds it, so the instinct to start shows before the wish to rise. This rotation falls in the Duality quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Bonding.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 21: The Hunter/Huntress

Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress, sits in the Heart, the Center of willpower and worth, and its hexagram is Biting Through. Its lines run from Warning and Might is right through Powerlessness and Strategy to Objectivity and Chaos. It completes Channel 21-45, Money Line, with Gate 45 in the Throat, a design of a materialist and the one manifesting Channel any of this cross's Gates can complete. As a Sun it makes your purpose the question of what you go after and how. As an Earth it adds a sense of what is worth pursuing beneath another theme.

Gate 48: Depth

Gate 48, Depth, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct that speaks once and in the present, and its hexagram is The Well. Its lines begin with Insignificance and Degeneracy and move through Incommunicado and Restructuring to Action and Self-fulfillment. It completes Channel 16-48, The Wavelength, with Gate 16 in the Throat, a design of talent. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of how deep you are willing to go before you act. As an Earth it brings an instinct about whether there is enough beneath the effort to sustain it.

Gate 54: Ambition

Gate 54, Ambition, sits in the Root, and its hexagram is The Marrying Maiden. Its lines go from Influence and Discretion through Covert interaction to Magnanimity and Selectivity. It completes Channel 32-54, Transformation, with Gate 32 in the Spleen, a design of being driven, on the Tribal circuit. It is the Design Sun in rotation 1 and the Design Earth in rotation 2. With Gate 53 beside it in the same Center, the Design side of this cross is all Root: the drive to begin and the drive to rise, both working before you decide.

Gate 53: Beginnings

Gate 53, Beginnings, also sits in the Root, and its hexagram is Development. Its lines run from Accumulation and Momentum to Assuredness and Phasing. It completes Channel 42-53, Maturation, with Gate 42 in the Sacral, a design of balanced development, and that Channel is one of the three format energy Channels. It is the Design Earth in rotation 1 and the Design Sun in rotation 2, so the push to start things runs below awareness, and others may see you begin before you have decided to.

Three Gates that push and one that goes deep

Three of the four Gates sit in motor Centers: Gate 21 in the Heart, Gates 53 and 54 in the Root. The Heart is willpower and worth, and the Root is pressure and drive. Only Gate 48 sits in an awareness Center, the Spleen, where instinct speaks once and in the present.

So the cross pushes hard and has one place to check itself. Depth is the Gate that asks whether the effort has enough water behind it, and it asks quietly, in the moment, without explanation. The cross invites you to weigh that one quiet signal against the louder pressure of the Root. The Left Angle adds the people around you, who can see whether the effort is deep or only busy.

A door to the Money Line, left open

Gate 21 can complete Channel 21-45, Money Line, with Gate 45 in the Throat. It is a manifesting Channel: a motor joined straight to the Throat. A motor joined to the Throat is what makes a Manifestor, or a Manifesting Generator when the Sacral is also defined.

The cross does not fix that. It gives you Gate 21 and not Gate 45, so the Channel is complete only if Gate 45 is in your own chart or arrives through someone else. Your Type and Authority come from the whole chart, not from this cross. When the Channel is there, a Heart that wants something can say so directly. When it is not, the pursuit often depends on a person who carries the missing Gate.

Two Root Gates that set the format

Beginnings and Ambition are an opposite pair, and both live in the Root. Beginnings is the steady accumulation that turns a start into momentum. Ambition is the selective climb that follows. Together they make the Design side of Endeavor one long arc, from the first small step to the last chosen rung.

Gate 53 sits in Channel 42-53, one of three format energy Channels. The canon says each one sets a format for the whole circuit it sits in, and this one belongs to the Collective circuit. Gate 42 has to be present for the Channel to work, so the format arrives through a partner. Gate 54 leads to the Spleen through Channel 32-54, which means both Root Gates reach for another Center before they reach the Throat.

Why the Endeavor is a Left Angle cross

A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. Endeavor is a word about effort, and here the effort is rarely solo. What you pursue, the depth you find and the ambition you carry all get tested and shaped by the people who share the work. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 21.5 means Gate 21, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Endeavor cross.

Endeavor 1: Personality Sun in Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress
21.1 WarningYou sense where a pursuit will go wrong, and you give people warning before the trouble arrives.
21.2 Might is rightYou can lean on strength to get your way, and the cross asks you to notice who pays for it.
21.3 PowerlessnessYou feel what it is to lack control, and that feeling teaches you how to share it fairly.
21.4 StrategyYou plan your approach before you move, and your timing counts for more than your force.
21.5 ObjectivityYou see a situation without taking sides, and people rely on you for a view that is not personal.
21.6 ChaosWhen things fall apart, you stay steady long enough to see what is worth keeping.
Endeavor 2: Personality Sun in Gate 48, Depth
48.1 InsignificanceYou begin by feeling small next to the task, and that humility keeps you from faking depth.
48.2 DegeneracyYou notice where something has gone stale, and the cross asks you to say so kindly.
48.3 IncommunicadoYou can go quiet while you work something out, and others may think you have left the conversation.
48.4 RestructuringYou rebuild the way a thing is done, and the people who share the work must rebuild with you.
48.5 ActionYour depth counts once it turns into action, and you learn the most by doing the task itself.
48.6 Self-fulfillmentYou find fulfillment by finishing something that took everything you had, and others benefit from the finish.

Living the Endeavor cross

At work

The name points to sustained effort, and this cross suits work that rewards staying power: a long project, a craft, a goal that others are also working toward. Check whether the work has enough depth for you, which is Gate 48, before the drive of the Root carries you through it. Working with other people is where the cross pays off, because they keep your effort pointed at something worth the cost.

In relationships

Two motors and a Spleen mean you can bring a lot of push and some quiet worry into close relationships. Partners often see the ambition first and the worry after. The Left Angle asks you to let people in on the effort: say what you are pushing for and what you are afraid of, so they can join the work instead of standing at its edge.

In decisions

Pressure to act is not a decision. The Root can make any moment feel urgent, and the Heart can make you want to prove something. Let your Strategy and Authority choose what to say yes to, and let the effort follow from there.

Decide with your Type and your inner Authority, and put your effort where they say it is yours to put. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Endeavor cross is misread

"Endeavor means I have to work hard all the time"

The cross describes purpose, not a workload. Two of its Gates are in the Root, the pressure Center, but pressure is a feeling to read, not an order to obey.

"Gate 21 means I am a Manifestor"

Type comes from the whole chart. Gate 21 can complete Channel 21-45 with Gate 45 in the Throat, but without Gate 45 in your chart that link is not there.

"Ambition is a bad word here"

Gate 54 is named Ambition, but its lines include Discretion, Magnanimity and Selectivity. It is about what you climb toward and whom you take with you.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 21: What are you going after right now, and would you still want it if nobody could see you get it?
  2. Gate 48: Where in your life have you gone deep enough, and where are you still skimming?
  3. Gate 54: Whom do you want to bring with you if you rise, and have you told them?
  4. Gate 53: What is the smallest real beginning you could make this week?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Endeavor rotation you carry, your Sun line, and whether Gate 45, 16, 32 or 42 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Endeavor

What is the Left Angle Cross of Endeavor?

It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54. Its theme is sustained effort, depth and ambition, worked out through other people rather than alone.

Which Endeavor rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 21/48 | 54/53 is Endeavor 1, with The Hunter/Huntress as your Personality Sun. 48/21 | 53/54 is Endeavor 2, with Depth as your Personality Sun.

Does the Endeavor cross make me a Manifestor?

No. Gate 21 can complete the manifesting Channel 21-45 with Gate 45, but that depends on your whole chart. The cross does not fix your Type or your Authority.

What does it mean that Gate 53 is in a format energy Channel?

Channel 42-53 joins the Root and the Sacral and is one of three format energy Channels, which set a format for the circuit they sit in. It is complete only when Gate 42 is also in your chart or in the person beside you.

How does Ambition sit beside The Hunter/Huntress in Endeavor?

Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress, carries Biting Through and sits in the Heart. Gate 54, Ambition, carries The Marrying Maiden and sits in the Root. Both are Tribal Gates and both Centers are motors, so their Channels, 21-45 and 32-54, belong to the Tribal circuit.

Why are the two Endeavor rotations in different quarters?

The quarter follows the Personality Sun. Gate 21 sits in the Initiation quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Mind, and Gate 48 sits in the Duality quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Bonding.
