Juxtaposition Cross of Control

The Juxtaposition Cross of Control is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path that mixes two motors, the Heart and the Root, with the Spleen's instinct for what is sound.

Simple way to think about it: Control is the hand on the dial of an old radio. It does not make the music, but it decides how loud and how clear it comes through, and nothing sounds right until the hand has settled it.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Control. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (21/48 | 54/53). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Control cross on the BodyGraph

Three Centers hold the four Gates, and two of them are motors. Gate 21 is in the Heart, Gate 48 in the Spleen, and Gates 53 and 54 both in the Root. The conscious pair, 21 and 48, is the pair found in the Right Angle Cross of Tension; the Design pair, 53 and 54, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Penetration.

The Hunter/Huntress is your conscious Sun and Depth your conscious Earth, so the Heart and the Spleen are the parts of the cross you can feel. Ambition and Beginnings run on the Design side. Both are in the Root, so the push behind the cross works out of sight.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 21: The Hunter/Huntress

Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress, is the conscious Sun and the cross's Heart Gate. Its hexagram is Biting Through, which means getting at what is stuck. It completes Channel 21-45, Money Line, with Gate 45 in the Throat, a manifesting Channel joining a motor to the voice. The keynote is a Design of a Materialist. Its fourth line, Strategy, is fixed here, so the Heart does not simply push. It plans how the push will land before anyone sees it move.

Gate 48: Depth

Gate 48, Depth, is the conscious Earth and sits in the Spleen. Its hexagram is The Well, something deep that has to be drawn on. It completes Channel 16-48, The Wavelength, with Gate 16 in the Throat, a Channel keynoted as talent. Its fourth line is Restructuring, fixed in this cross. Depth here is not stored knowledge. It is the instinct to take something that exists and rebuild it on a sounder footing.

Gate 54: Ambition

Gate 54, Ambition, is the Design Sun and the first of two Root Gates. Its hexagram is The Marrying Maiden. It completes Channel 32-54, Transformation, with Gate 32 in the Spleen, a Channel keynoted as being driven. Its first line, Influence, is fixed here, so the drive begins by affecting people rather than by acting on them directly. Because it sits on the Design side, you may be pushed along by it before you notice it is there.

Gate 53: Beginnings

Gate 53, Beginnings, is the Design Earth and the second Root Gate. Its hexagram is Development: things start small and grow in stages. It completes Channel 42-53, Maturation, with Gate 42 in the Sacral, a format energy Channel. Its first line, Accumulation, is fixed in this cross, so the Root's pressure to begin gets worked out by gathering resources first. A start in this cross is a long preparation that finally shows.

Two motors in one cross

The Heart is willpower and worth, the smallest motor in the chart. The Root is pressure and drive, the push to begin. This cross has both, and it puts them on opposite sides: the Heart is conscious, the Root is Design.

That split matters. The part of you that knows it is willing is not the part that supplies the pressure. When the Root pushes and the Heart has not agreed, you may feel driven without a reason. When the Heart says yes and the Root is quiet, the will has nowhere to go.

Both Root Gates on the Design side

Gates 53 and 54 are a pair on the wheel, Beginnings and Ambition, and both are Design. The Root is a pressure Center, so the pressure this cross carries is felt as a push you did not choose. It shows up as restlessness before it shows up as a plan.

The fixed lines give that push a shape: Accumulation for Gate 53 and Influence for Gate 54. The pressure builds by collecting and by affecting others, not by sprinting.

Two roads to the Throat, neither inside the cross

No Gate of this cross sits in the Throat, yet two of its Channels lead there. Gate 21 completes the manifesting Channel 21-45, and Gate 48 completes Channel 16-48. If you have either in your chart, what the cross works out is able to be said or done.

Without them, the cross stays in the motors and the Spleen. The will and the drive are real, but they have to wait for another Gate, in your chart or in someone else's, to open the way out.

Why the Control is a Juxtaposition cross

For Control, the fixed fate means two motors and an instinct set in one arrangement for life. The will, the pressure and the sense of what is sound do not trade places. What changes is what you ask them to carry, and how much of the plan you let show. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Control cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Control cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 21.4 StrategyYour will plans before it moves, so people may see a strategy before they see any force.
Personality Earth: Gate 48.4 RestructuringYour instinct for what is sound rebuilds things, so you tend to restructure a situation rather than argue with it.
Design Sun: Gate 54.1 InfluenceBelow awareness you drive by affecting people, so your influence arrives before your effort does.
Design Earth: Gate 53.1 AccumulationYour starts begin by gathering what you need, so you build a store before the first visible move.

Living the Control cross

At work

People with Control often make good project leads, operators and rebuilders. They are the ones who plan the next phase, find the weak joint and gather what is needed before the launch. They work best when they can start slowly and have the budget or the people behind them in advance. Rushed starts without the groundwork go badly, because both fixed first lines in the Design pair are about accumulating and influencing before acting.

In relationships

The Heart wants worth, and the Root wants relief from pressure. At home, that can sound like needing a result and needing quiet at the same time. Tell the people close to you which one you mean. The Spleen's instinct for what is sound also helps: you tend to know quickly when a pattern in a relationship will not hold.

In decisions

The Root's pressure is not a decision, and willpower is not the same thing as a yes. Notice the push, then wait for your own signal.

Let your Type and inner Authority make the choice, and use the cross to plan how the choice gets carried out. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Control cross is misread

"Control means I control other people"

The cross is not named for a Gate, and none of its Gates or lines points at power over others. Its fixed lines are Strategy, Restructuring, Influence and Accumulation, which are about planning, rebuilding and preparing.

"Two motors means I have energy to spare"

Having a motor Gate is not the same as having a defined motor Center. Only the Channels you actually complete in your own chart decide that.

"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Endeavor"

The four Gates are identical. The Profile is the difference. Control comes only with 4/1 and fixes all four lines, while Endeavor is lived with 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 or 6/3 and worked out through other people.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 21: What are you planning right now that no one has seen you start?
  2. Gate 48: Which situation in your life needs to be rebuilt rather than argued with?
  3. Gate 54: Whose attention or approval are you reaching for before you do the work?
  4. Gate 53: What do you need to gather before you can call something a real beginning?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows whether your Heart or Root is defined, how your four fixed lines sit with your Type and Authority, and which of these Channels you really have. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Control

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Control?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path that combines the Heart, the Spleen and the Root, with the Heart and Spleen conscious and the Root underneath.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Control?

They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 21.4 Strategy as the Personality Sun, 48.4 Restructuring as the Personality Earth, 54.1 Influence as the Design Sun, and 53.1 Accumulation as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.

Where do the two motors sit in the Control cross?

The Heart through Gate 21 and the Root through Gates 53 and 54. The Spleen, through Gate 48, is an awareness Center. Whether a motor is defined in your chart depends on the Channels you actually complete.

What carries the Control cross out to the Throat?

Through Channel 21-45, Money Line, which is a manifesting Channel with Gate 45, and through Channel 16-48, The Wavelength, with Gate 16. Neither forms unless the partner Gate is active in your chart too.

Why are both Root Gates on the Design side?

The cross puts Gates 21 and 48 on the Personality side and Gates 54 and 53 on the Design side. So the Root pressure is not something you see directly in yourself. It is felt as a push, and others may notice it first.

What is format energy in the Control cross?

Gate 53 completes Channel 42-53, Maturation, with Gate 42 in the Sacral, which the canon marks as a format energy Channel. It is the one place the cross reaches for the Sacral.
