Juxtaposition Cross of Depth
The Juxtaposition Cross of Depth is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of skill and drive: a Spleen well on the surface, a Heart that hunts, and two Root Gates of ambition beneath.
Simple way to think about it: Depth is the cellar under a farmhouse. It sits out of sight, cool and quiet, and it is the reason the household eats through the winter.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Depth. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (48/21 | 53/54). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Depth cross on the BodyGraph
Three Centers hold the four Gates: the Heart has Gate 21, the Spleen has Gate 48, and the Root holds both Gate 53 and Gate 54. The conscious pair, 21 and 48, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of Tension carries. The Design pair, 53 and 54, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Penetration.

How the Depth cross is placed
The Depth (48/21 | 53/54)
Depth is your conscious Sun and The Hunter/Huntress your conscious Earth, so the Spleen and the Heart both sit on the side you know. You feel the pull to know a thing properly and the will to go after it. Beginnings and Ambition run on the Design side, and others may see your push to start before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 48: Depth
Gate 48, Depth, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Spleen. This cross carries the name of its Personality Sun Gate. Its hexagram is The Well. It completes Channel 16-48, The Wavelength, with Gate 16, Skills, in the Throat, a Collective Channel. Depth is the hunger to know something properly rather than briefly. Its fourth line, Restructuring, is fixed here: what you know is taken apart and rebuilt in a better order, again and again.
Gate 21: The Hunter/Huntress
Gate 21, The Hunter/Huntress, is the conscious Earth and the cross's only Heart Gate. Its hexagram is Biting Through. It completes Channel 21-45, the Money Line, with Gate 45, The Gatherer, in the Throat, and that is a manifesting Channel joining a motor to the Throat. This is will and control, grounded under the pursuit of knowledge. Its fourth line, Strategy, is always here, so the hunting is planned: you decide how to approach before you move.
Gate 53: Beginnings
Gate 53, Beginnings, is the Design Sun and sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Development. It completes Channel 42-53, Maturation, with Gate 42, Growth, in the Sacral. The canon places Gate 53 in a format energy Channel. Lived below awareness, it is the push to start something. Its first line, Accumulation, is fixed in this cross, so beginnings are small and they build, and the start that others see is already well along.
Gate 54: Ambition
Gate 54, Ambition, is the Design Earth and the second Root Gate. Its hexagram is The Marrying Maiden. It completes Channel 32-54, Transformation, with Gate 32, Continuity, in the Spleen, a Tribal Channel. It grounds the cross in a drive to rise and to be part of something that lasts. Its first line, Influence, is fixed here, which suggests the ambition moves through the people around you more than by force.
Two motors and a pressure Center
The Heart and the Root are both motor Centers, and the Root is also the pressure Center, the place of adrenaline and the push to begin. Between Gates 21, 53 and 54, three of the four Gates sit in a motor, so this cross has real drive built into its own Gates.
The drive is split. The Heart Gate is conscious will and the Root Gates are below awareness, so the pressure to begin tends to reach you as a mood or a restlessness before it becomes a plan. The fixed first lines, Accumulation and Influence, show what the Design side does with it: it builds and it persuades.
One awareness Center, speaking once
Gate 48 is the cross's only Spleen Gate, and the Spleen is its only awareness Center. The Spleen is the Center of instinct and fear, present tense only, and it speaks once. That sets the tone of the conscious side: knowing comes quickly and quietly, and then it needs to be tested against time.
Gate 54 completes Channel 32-54 with Gate 32, which also sits in the Spleen. If Gate 32 is in your chart, that Channel joins the Root to the Spleen and defines both. If it is not, the Spleen is only touched by Gate 48, and its quiet voice may come and go.
No Throat Gate, but two roads to it
None of the four Gates sits in the Throat, yet two of them point straight at it. Gate 48 reaches it through Channel 16-48, and Gate 21 through Channel 21-45. The second is a manifesting Channel, because it links the Heart motor directly to the Throat.
So the cross has things to say but no voice of its own. Whether you speak what you know depends on whether Gate 16 or Gate 45 is in your chart. If not, the knowing stays deep and quiet, and others learn it from what you do.
Why the Depth is a Juxtaposition cross
Nothing in Depth rotates or shifts with the years. The 4/1 Profile keeps all four lines exactly where they are, so the path is not to become someone else but to keep going further into what you already carry, with the Spleen and Root doing the quiet work at either end. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Depth cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Depth cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 48.4 Restructuring | Your depth is rebuilt from time to time, taking apart what you know and putting it back in a better order. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 21.4 Strategy | Your will works through planning: you take the pursuit seriously and decide how to approach before you move. |
| Design Sun: Gate 53.1 Accumulation | Below awareness you start small and let things accumulate, so the beginnings others see are already well along. |
| Design Earth: Gate 54.1 Influence | Your ambition runs through influence, a quiet pull on the people around you rather than a push. |
Living the Depth cross
At work
Depth fits work that rewards mastery over time: research, craft, engineering, finance, anything where knowing a thing completely is the point. Strategy suggests you work best with a plan, and Accumulation suggests steady building beats a sprint. Give yourself time before you are asked to show results.
In relationships
Close up, the cross can make you hard to reach, because the interesting part happens below the surface. People may take your quiet for distance. Let a few people into the planning, not only the results, and notice that your Influence works best when it is invited rather than applied.
In decisions
Drive is not direction. Two motors can push hard toward the wrong thing. Let your Type and Authority decide what to start, and use the cross to carry it out with depth.
It fits people who finish what they start and want to know it thoroughly, with the choosing left to your own Strategy and Authority. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Depth cross is misread
"Depth means I should always go deeper"
"Two motors in my cross make me a Manifestor or Generator"
"Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54 always add up to Depth"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 48: Which skill have you rebuilt from the ground up more than once?
- Gate 21: What are you hunting right now, and how have you planned the approach?
- Gate 53: What did you start small that has quietly grown?
- Gate 54: Whose support does your ambition rely on, and have you told them?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Depth
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Depth?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design built from Gates 21, 48, 53 and 54, and it only ever comes with the 4/1 Profile. It describes a fixed path of mastery and drive, with Spleen and Heart Gates on the surface and two Root Gates beneath.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Depth?
They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 48.4 Restructuring as the Personality Sun, 21.4 Strategy as the Personality Earth, 53.1 Accumulation as the Design Sun, and 54.1 Influence as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.
Where does Depth get its drive?
From the Heart and the Root, both motor Centers. Gate 21 is in the Heart, and Gates 53 and 54 are in the Root. The Root is also a pressure Center. The drive is real, but the cross alone does not define any Channel.
What makes the Root special in Depth?
Two of the four Gates sit there, and both are on the Design side, so the pressure to begin works below awareness. Gate 53 starts things small; Gate 54 reaches for more through other people.
Should I expect a manifesting Channel in Depth?
Only if the rest of your chart supplies it. Gate 21 completes Channel 21-45, a manifesting Channel, when Gate 45 is also present. The cross itself does not define it.
Is Depth the same as being a deep person?
Not exactly. The cross describes a pattern of Gates, lines and Centers, not a personality. It does lean toward knowing things thoroughly, since its conscious Sun is Gate 48 and its fixed line is Restructuring.
