Left Angle Cross of Confrontation

The Left Angle Cross of Confrontation is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 45, 26, 36 and 6. It combines gathering people and the pride of the ego with crisis and friction, and it is worked out through other people: what gets said, and what gets faced, between you and them.

Simple way to think about it: Confrontation is the neighbor who says out loud what everyone else has been stepping around. Said early and plainly, it clears the air. Said late and sharply, it starts a fight. The whole cross is about learning to tell the difference.

The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (45/26 | 36/6). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Confrontation cross on the BodyGraph

The four Gates sit in only three Centers: the Throat at the top, the Heart in the middle, and two Gates together in the Solar Plexus. The conscious pair, Gates 45 and 26, is also a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Rulership, and the Design pair, Gates 36 and 6, is a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Eden.

With The Gatherer as your conscious Sun, the cross sits in the Civilization quarter, a purpose fulfilled through Form: you are here to bring people together around something, and The Egoist, your conscious Earth, keeps asking what you are doing it for. On the Design side, Crisis and Friction work below awareness, so the tension in a room often reaches you before you can name it.

With a 4/1 Profile, these Gates make the Juxtaposition Cross of The Trickster.

With The Egoist as your conscious Sun, the cross sits in the Mutation quarter, a purpose fulfilled through Transformation: your own will and worth come first, and The Gatherer, the conscious Earth, turns that into something a group can join. Friction is now the Design Sun and Crisis the Design Earth, so disagreement is part of your makeup before you decide to raise it.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 45: The Gatherer

Gate 45, The Gatherer, is a Throat Gate, so it is a voice. Its hexagram is Gathering Together. It completes Channel 21-45 with Gate 21 in the Heart, named Money Line and keynoted as a design of a materialist, in the Tribal circuit. As a Sun it makes your purpose the gathering of people and resources around a shared aim. As an Earth it gives another theme a way to bring others in. Its lines run from Canvassing and Consensus to Leadership and Reconsideration, by way of Exclusion.

Gate 26: The Egoist

Gate 26, The Egoist, sits in the Heart, the Center of willpower and worth, the smallest motor in the chart. Its hexagram is The Taming Power of the Great. It completes Channel 26-44 with Gate 44 in the Spleen, named Surrender and keynoted as a design of a transmitter, in the Tribal circuit. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of how you put forward what you are worth. As an Earth it adds will to another theme. Its lines include Influence, Censorship and Authority.

Gate 36: Crisis

Gate 36, Crisis, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves. Its hexagram is The Darkening of the Light. It completes Channel 35-36 with Gate 35 in the Throat, named Transitoriness and keynoted as a design of a jack of all trades. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so the pull toward a crisis runs below awareness. Its lines run from Resistance and Support through Espionage and The Underground to Justice.

Gate 6: Friction

Gate 6, Friction, sits in the Solar Plexus. Its hexagram is Conflict. It completes Channel 6-59 with Gate 59 in the Sacral, named Mating and keynoted as a design focused on reproduction, in the Tribal circuit. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so a readiness for friction can be seen in you before you choose it. Its lines run from Retreat and The Guerilla to Arbitration and The Peacemaker, which shows how many ways a conflict can end.

Two roads from a motor to the Throat

Two of the four Gates can complete manifesting Channels, the kind that join a motor straight to the Throat. Gate 45, in the Throat, pairs with Gate 21 in the Heart to make Channel 21-45. Gate 36, in the Solar Plexus, pairs with Gate 35 in the Throat to make Channel 35-36. Those are two of the four manifesting Channels there are.

Neither is fixed by the cross, because it holds only one half of each. But the cross points that way: both the Heart and the Solar Plexus are motors, and the Throat is where a motor's energy leaves you. When another person or the rest of your chart supplies Gate 21 or Gate 35, what you feel can turn quickly into something said or done.

Two Gates in the Solar Plexus on different waves

Gates 6 and 36 are both in the Solar Plexus, which is both a motor and an awareness Center. They are also opposites on the wheel. The canon puts Gate 6 on the Tribal wave, which builds a step at a time until it releases, and Gate 36 on the Collective wave, a gradual rise and then a sharp fall. In its account the emotional wave begins at Gate 6.

That gives the Design side of the cross two ways to feel a rise. The canon gives the Solar Plexus a Not-Self question: "Am I avoiding confrontation and truth?" It fits a cross with this name. The task is not to start more conflict. It is to stop avoiding the truth in the room once the wave has settled and you can say it clearly.

The Egoist and The Gatherer: a Tribal pair

The conscious pair is Heart and Throat, and both Gates belong to the Tribal circuit. Gate 26 reaches toward the Spleen in Channel 26-44. Gate 45 reaches toward the Heart in Channel 21-45. They stand opposite each other on the wheel, so in one rotation you gather first and ask about your worth second, and in the other the order reverses.

It is a group-minded pair with a personal edge. The Gatherer brings people together, and The Egoist asks what they are being gathered for and what it will cost. A good deal of this cross is that argument held inside one person, and then carried out into rooms where other people have their own answer.

Why the Confrontation is a Left Angle cross

A Left Angle cross is lived through other people, not around a private aim. Confrontation cannot happen alone. It needs a second person to disagree with, to be gathered by, or to face. Your life tends to be shaped by those meetings, and by the way you leave them. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 45.5 means Gate 45, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Confrontation cross.

Confrontation 1: Personality Sun in Gate 45, The Gatherer
45.1 CanvassingYou reach out to people one at a time, and that early effort builds what the group becomes.
45.2 ConsensusYou look for what the group already agrees on and build from there.
45.3 ExclusionSome people will be left out, and the cross asks you to be honest with yourself about why.
45.4 DirectionYou point the group toward a goal, and it holds together because you are clear about it.
45.5 LeadershipPeople may look to you to lead, and you learn that being asked is not the same as being right.
45.6 ReconsiderationYou come back to the group's plan and ask again whether it still serves the people in it.
Confrontation 2: Personality Sun in Gate 26, The Egoist
26.1 A bird in the handYou hold on to what is secure, and you learn when holding on has turned into fear of losing it.
26.2 The lessons of historyYou learn from what has happened to others before you, and it shapes what you promise.
26.3 InfluenceYour influence shows in how you present yourself, and others measure your word against it.
26.4 CensorshipYou decide what to leave out so the message stays clear, and you own that choice.
26.5 AdaptabilityYou adjust to the person in front of you without losing sight of your own aim.
26.6 AuthorityYou carry authority lightly, and people trust it more when you do not insist on it.

Living the Confrontation cross

At work

At work, Confrontation people are often the ones who put the awkward topic on the table and also the ones who pull the team together afterward. You do well in a role where raising a problem is part of the job. It helps to speak once you have had time with a feeling, not while it is at its height. A calm, clear "here is what I see" lands better than a reaction, and people remember it longer.

In relationships

In relationships, you may be the one who names what is wrong, or the one who feels it first and holds it. Neither makes you hard to love. Tell the people close to you that you work things out by talking them through, not by avoiding them. Pay attention to how much of the friction is yours and how much you are picking up. Honest closeness grows from being able to say hard things and stay in the room.

In decisions

Confrontation gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. A strong feeling about whether to speak up is part of the wave and not yet an answer. Let it rise and settle, then decide the way your own Strategy and Authority say. The right time to say something is usually later than the first rush and sooner than never.

Answer through your Type and your inner Authority, and let the cross show in what you choose to say and who you choose to face. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Confrontation cross is misread

"Confrontation means I will always be in conflict"

The Gates are The Gatherer, The Egoist, Crisis and Friction. The cross is as much about bringing people together as about disagreement, and Gate 6 has lines such as Arbitration and The Peacemaker.

"The Egoist means I am selfish"

Gate 26 sits in the Heart, the Center of willpower and worth. The name points to how you value and present yourself. It is a theme to work with, not a character fault.

"Crisis means my life will be full of emergencies"

Gate 36 is a Solar Plexus Gate about emotional waves and the Darkening of the Light. It describes a way of moving through hard times, and its lines include Support and Justice.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 45: Who are you trying to bring together right now, and what are you gathering them for?
  2. Gate 26: What do you believe you are worth in this situation, and who are you showing it to?
  3. Gate 36: What is the hardest thing you are going through at the moment, and who is helping?
  4. Gate 6: What disagreement are you avoiding, and what would it take to say it plainly?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Confrontation rotation you carry, your Sun line, and which of Gates 21, 44, 35 and 59 your chart supplies. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.
