It is the busiest Gate of the four, completing three Channels: Perfected Form with Gate 10, The Brainwave with Gate 20 and Power with Gate 34. Few Gates have this many ways to connect.
Gate 54: Ambition
Gate 54, Ambition, is a Root Gate with the hexagram The Marrying Maiden. It is the push to rise, to be recognized and to get somewhere better. Its lines include Influence, Discretion and Selectivity, so the drive has a choosy streak and a habit of keeping its own counsel. As a Sun, your purpose is to climb with care. Gate 53: Beginnings
Gate 53, Beginnings, sits in the Root and has the hexagram Development. It is the pressure to start something new, and its lines, from Accumulation and Momentum to Assertion and Phasing, describe a start building step by step to its finish, with room to rest between phases. As a Sun, your purpose involves getting things going. As an Earth, it adds the push to begin. Its Channel, Maturation, runs to Gate 42, Growth, in the Sacral, where the start is carried to completion. The Root's pressure is behind it, so the urge to start can feel urgent.
Heart and Root: a cross built on motors
Two of the three Centers this cross touches are motors: the Heart, which carries willpower and worth and is the smallest motor, and the Root, the Center of pressure and drive. The Root holds both Beginnings and Ambition, so half the cross is stress and the push to begin.
That makes Penetration an active cross with plenty of fuel and very little built-in brake. The brake comes from the third Center, the Spleen, where Intuitive Clarity lives. When the Spleen Gate guides the motors, the drive is accurate. When it is overruled, the drive is just pressure, and people with this cross can burn a lot of energy getting through the wrong wall.
