Left Angle Cross of Limitation
The Left Angle Cross of Limitation is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 42, 32, 60 and 56. It is about growth that works within limits: finishing cycles, keeping what lasts and carrying new experience back to people. Its purpose is worked out through other people.
Simple way to think about it: Limitation is the craftsperson who works with a board of fixed size. The edges are not a problem to them. They are the reason the thing gets built, finished and handed to someone who can use it.

Look for the line that reads Left Angle Cross of Limitation. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (42/32 | 60/56). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Limitation cross on the BodyGraph
The four Gates sit in four Centers: the Root and the Sacral are motors, the Spleen is the awareness Center, and the Throat gives the cross its voice through Gate 56. The conscious pair, 32 and 42, is also in the Right Angle Cross of Maya, and the Design pair, 60 and 56, is in the Right Angle Cross of Laws.

The two rotations of the Limitation cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Limitation 1 (42/32 | 60/56)
With Growth as your conscious Sun, the cycle is the theme: you are here to take something through from beginning to end, and Continuity, the conscious Earth, asks what is worth keeping once it is done. Acceptance and Stimulation work on the Design side, so the limits you accept and the experiences you gather run below awareness.
The Limitation 2 (32/42 | 56/60)
With Continuity as your conscious Sun, the theme is what lasts: you notice what is worth conserving, and Growth, the Earth, keeps it moving forward. On the Design side Stimulation is the Sun and Acceptance the Earth, so a hunger for new experience leads while the acceptance of limits grounds it.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 42: Growth
Gate 42, Growth, sits in the Sacral, the largest motor, and its hexagram is Increase. The canon also knows it as finishing things. It completes Channel 42-53 with Gate 53 in the Root, a design of balanced development, and it is a format energy Gate. Its lines go from Diversification and Identification through Trial and error to The Middle Man, Self-actualization and Nurturing. As a Sun it makes your purpose the full cycle, start to finish. As an Earth it gives continuity something to continue.
Gate 32: Continuity
Gate 32, Continuity, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct and fear, and its hexagram is Duration. It completes Channel 32-54 with Gate 54 in the Root, a design of being driven, on the Tribal circuit. Its lines run from Conservation and Restraint through Lack of continuity to Flexibility and Tranquility. As a Sun it makes your purpose what will last. As an Earth it grounds your growth in an instinct for what is worth keeping, and a sense of when something is not.
Gate 60: Acceptance
Acceptance, Gate 60, belongs to the Root, the Center of pressure and drive. Its hexagram is called Limitation, the same word as this cross. It completes Channel 3-60 with Gate 3 in the Sacral, a design of energy that fluctuates and initiates, a pulse. It is a format energy Gate on the Individual circuit. The six lines start with Acceptance and Decisiveness and finish with Resourcefulness, Leadership and Rigidity. On the Design side it builds in an acceptance of what is possible that others notice before you do.
Gate 56: Stimulation
Gate 56, Stimulation, is the one Gate here in the Throat, so it speaks. Its hexagram is The Wanderer. It completes Channel 11-56 with Gate 11 in the Ajna, a design of a searcher, on the Collective circuit. Its lines run from Quality and Linkage through Alienation and Expediency to Attracting attention and Caution. On the Design side it gives your voice a way of drawing people into what you have seen and where you have been, often without a plan.
Two format energy Gates: Growth and Acceptance
The canon marks Gates 42 and 60 as format energy Gates. Gate 42 completes Channel 42-53, keynoted as balanced development. Gate 60 completes Channel 3-60, keynoted as energy that fluctuates and initiates, a pulse. One Gate is about growing in steps, and the other is about the rhythm of starting again.
In both rotations one of the two is conscious and the other is on the Design side: Growth in the Personality, Acceptance in the Design. So you can feel the push to grow, while the acceptance of limits works quietly in the background. Together they describe a rhythm of beginning, growing and reaching an edge.
Three circuits in one cross
Each Gate here belongs to a circuit, and there are three of them. Gate 32 is on the Tribal circuit. Gates 42 and 56 are on the Collective circuit. Gate 60 is on the Individual circuit. The cross does not belong to one style of group.
That fits a Left Angle life. Depending on who you are with, a different part of the cross comes forward: the loyalty of the Tribal, the learning of the Collective, the personal edge of the Individual. You may feel like a slightly different person in different rooms, and the cross says that is the point.
Three of the four Gates answer to the Root
Gate 60 sits in the Root itself, and the Channels of Gates 32 and 42, 32-54 and 42-53, both end there. Three of the four Gates are tied to the Root, the Center of adrenaline, stress and the push to begin. Of the four Centers in the cross, it is the pressure Center.
So limits do real work in this cross. They are a way of managing pressure. The Spleen brings an instinct that speaks once and often speaks from fear, and the Root brings drive. Learning which is speaking, and choosing a limit that fits it, is what keeps the pressure from turning into rush or fear.
Why the Limitation is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Limitation, many of the edges you accept are set by others: their needs, their timing, their no. You learn what is enough by working beside them. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 42.5 means Gate 42, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Limitation cross.
Limitation 1: Personality Sun in Gate 42, Growth
| 42.1 Diversification | You try a range of things before settling, and the variety is how you learn what is worth finishing. |
|---|---|
| 42.2 Identification | You recognize yourself in what you take on, and you finish best what feels like yours. |
| 42.3 Trial and error | You learn by trial and error, and you finish cycles by going through the failed ones too. |
| 42.4 The Middle Man | You stand between people and what they need, and you help cycles finish for those around you. |
| 42.5 Self-actualization | You grow by becoming more fully who you are, and others often see the finished result before you do. |
| 42.6 Nurturing | You nurture what you started until it can stand, and your care is what lets others take it over. |
Limitation 2: Personality Sun in Gate 32, Continuity
| 32.1 Conservation | You protect what already works, and your instinct for conservation keeps others from throwing it away too soon. |
|---|---|
| 32.2 Restraint | You hold back when something is not ready, and your restraint is a gift to the cycle. |
| 32.3 Lack of continuity | Things end for you more often than you expect, and each ending teaches what truly lasts. |
| 32.4 Right is might | You may feel the strongest position wins, and the cross asks you to test that against what endures. |
| 32.5 Flexibility | You bend without breaking, and your flexibility lets you keep going with very different people. |
| 32.6 Tranquility | You settle into a calm about what lasts, and others find that peace easier to trust. |
Living the Limitation cross
At work
Limitation people do well where work has stages and an edge: projects with a start and a finish, craft, training, caring for something over years. You are often the one who knows when a thing is done, and who keeps going when others lose interest. Because the cross works through other people, ask for the brief, the deadline and the budget early. They are your materials, not your obstacles.
In relationships
In relationships you offer steadiness: you keep your word, remember what matters and stay through a hard season. The risk is holding on to something that has already finished, or accepting a limit that someone else set for you. Check with the people you love which limits are shared and which are only yours.
In decisions
This cross fixes neither your Type nor your Authority, so decisions follow the rest of your chart. What it adds is a question to ask afterward: is this a limit I have accepted, or one I am afraid of? The Spleen speaks once, often from instinct or fear, and the Root brings pressure. Learn which one you are hearing.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let the limits you choose be ones that came from your own answer. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Limitation cross is misread
"Limitation means I am being held back"
"Left Angle means other people decide my limits"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

- Gate 32: What are you keeping going out of habit, and what is worth keeping on purpose?
- Gate 60: Which limit have you accepted lately, and did it free you or shrink you?
- Gate 56: What have you been wandering through lately that you have not yet told anyone about?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Limitation
What is the Left Angle Cross of Limitation?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 42, 32, 60 and 56. Its theme is growth within limits, finishing cycles and keeping what lasts, worked out through other people.
Which Limitation rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 42/32 | 60/56 is Limitation 1, with Growth as your Personality Sun. 32/42 | 56/60 is Limitation 2, with Continuity as your Personality Sun.
Why does Gate 60's hexagram share the name of this cross?
Gate 60 is named Acceptance, and its hexagram is called Limitation. The cross takes its name from that hexagram, so the name points at one idea: you reach what you want by accepting its edges.
Does Limitation decide my Type or Authority?
No. None of the four Gates is the partner of another, so no Channel is made from inside the cross. Gates 53, 54, 3 and 11 would complete the Channels, and they come from your chart or from other people.
Is there another cross called Limitation?
Yes. A Juxtaposition cross also carries the name, and it belongs to the 4/1 Profile. This page covers the Left Angle cross, which belongs to the Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.
How do Duration and Increase meet in Limitation?
Gate 32, Continuity, carries Duration and sits in the Spleen. Gate 42, Growth, carries Increase and sits in the Sacral. They are opposites and the conscious pair, so Limitation 1 has Growth as the Personality Sun and Limitation 2 has Continuity. The cross pairs staying power with expansion.
