Left Angle Cross of Revolution
The Left Angle Cross of Revolution is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 49, 4, 14 and 8. It is about change that people need: a principle that stops working, a formula for replacing it, and the energy and voice to carry it, all worked out through the people you meet.
Simple way to think about it: Think of the person who finally stands up at a town meeting. They did not plan a speech. The old rule had simply stopped working for everyone, and somebody had to say so. A revolution of this kind starts as a shared feeling and waits for one person willing to give it words.

Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Revolution cross on the BodyGraph
The four Gates sit in four Centers: the Solar Plexus and the Sacral, both motors, with the Throat above them and the Ajna above the Throat. Gates 4 and 49 are the conscious pair that also appears in the Right Angle Cross of Explanation, and Gates 8 and 14 are the Design pair from the Right Angle Cross of Contagion. Revolution takes one pair from each.

The two rotations of the Revolution cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Revolution 1 (49/4 | 14/8)
With Principles as your conscious Sun, the question of what you stand on comes first: you feel what no longer holds, and Formulization, your conscious Earth, asks you to have a workable answer ready. On the Design side, Power Skills is the Sun and Contribution the Earth, so the capacity and the voice for change run underneath, and others may see them in you before you do.
The Revolution 2 (4/49 | 8/14)
With Formulization as your conscious Sun, you start from the question and the formula: you want to explain how things could be done differently. Principles, the conscious Earth, supplies the feeling that things must change. On the Design side, Contribution is the Sun and Power Skills the Earth, so the voice and the working energy are the quiet background of how people meet you.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 49: Principles
Gate 49, Principles, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves. Its hexagram is named Revolution, which is where this cross gets its name. It completes Channel 19-49 with Gate 19 in the Root, the Channel of Synthesis, keynoted as a design of sensitivity. Its lines run from The law of necessity to Attraction, through The last resort and Organization. As a Sun it makes your purpose the question of which principles must change. As an Earth it grounds another theme in the feeling that something no longer holds.
Gate 4: Formulization
Gate 4, Formulization, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts and certainty. Its hexagram is Youthful Folly, the question asked before the answer is known. It completes Channel 4-63 with Gate 63 in the Head, the Channel of Logic, keynoted as mental ease mixed with doubt. Its lines run from Pleasure to Excess, with The Liar and Seduction in between, which shows how much depends on whether a formula has been tested. As a Sun it makes you the one who offers an answer. As an Earth it keeps the change practical.
Gate 14: Power Skills
Gate 14, Power Skills, sits in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Its hexagram is Possession in Great Measure. It completes Channel 2-14 with Gate 2 in the G Center, the Channel of The Beat, keynoted as being a keeper of keys. Its lines run from Money isn't everything through Management, Service and Security to Arrogance and Humility. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations: the energy and resources for change are built in, and its last line is a reminder of who they are for.
Gate 8: Contribution
Gate 8, Contribution, is a Throat Gate, so it is a voice. Its hexagram is Holding Together. It completes Channel 1-8 with Gate 1 in the G Center, the Channel of Inspiration, keynoted as a creative role model. Its lines run from Honesty and Service through The Phoney to Respect, Dharma and Communion. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so the voice that carries the change is one others hear in you before you plan to use it. It is the opposite of Gate 14 on the wheel.
Three circuits meet in one cross
The Channels these Gates complete belong to three different circuits. Gate 49 completes Channel 19-49, a Tribal Channel. Gates 8 and 14 complete Channels 1-8 and 2-14, both Individual. Gate 4 completes Channel 4-63, a Collective one. Few crosses ask you to speak three languages at once.
Each of the four brings its own keynote: sensitivity, being a creative role model, keeping the keys, and mental ease mixed with doubt. None of them is a promise, because a Channel only exists when both of its Gates are defined. What the cross gives you is four doors. Gates 19, 1, 2 and 63 have to come from your own chart or from the people around you, which is where a Left Angle purpose does its work.
Two motors, one voice, and no straight line between them
Gate 14 is in the Sacral and Gate 49 is in the Solar Plexus. Those are two motors, and both are in this cross. The only Throat Gate is Gate 8, and it is not on a Channel to either motor. Look at where the four Channels go: to the G Center twice, to the Root, and to the Head. None of them runs from a motor to the Throat.
In practice the energy of this cross and the voice of this cross are separate things that have to be introduced to each other. Of the four Channels, only 2-14 is a Generated Channel, the kind that includes the Sacral. The rest are Projected. So the drive to change something does not automatically become speech, and speech does not automatically bring drive. Both depend on the rest of your chart and on who is standing next to you.
A feeling and a formula side by side
The cross has two awareness Centers, and they are very different. The Solar Plexus carries Gate 49 and works in emotional waves. The Ajna carries Gate 4 and works in concepts and certainty. One is a feeling that something has to change. The other is the attempt to say exactly how.
That pairing is the core of Revolution. A feeling without a formula is only unrest, and a formula without a feeling is only an opinion. The two Gates are opposite each other on the wheel, so each one corrects the other: Principles asks whether the answer is really needed, and Formulization asks whether the need has an answer. In rotation 1 the feeling is first. In rotation 2 the question is.
Why the Revolution is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Revolution that is the whole point. Change that nobody else wants is only a private opinion. It becomes a revolution when other people recognize the need and join in. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 49.5 means Gate 49, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Revolution cross.
Revolution 1: Personality Sun in Gate 49, Principles
| 49.1 The law of necessity | You change things when staying put has become impossible, and necessity, not mood, is what sets you moving. |
|---|---|
| 49.2 The last resort | You turn to change only after gentler options have failed, and others trust that you did not choose it lightly. |
| 49.3 Popular discontent | You feel the group's unrest before it has words, and your part is to give it direction rather than noise. |
| 49.4 Platform | You need a solid place to stand before you press for change, and others notice whether your footing is real. |
| 49.5 Organization | You turn shared frustration into a working structure, and people look to you to make the change joinable. |
| 49.6 Attraction | Your pull comes from the change you have already lived, and people follow what you embody, not what you argue. |
Revolution 2: Personality Sun in Gate 4, Formulization
| 4.1 Pleasure | Your answers come easiest when the question truly interests you, and that enjoyment makes others want to hear them. |
|---|---|
| 4.2 Acceptance | You accept that not every question needs an answer yet, and that patience lets others arrive at their own. |
| 4.3 Irresponsibility | You can offer formulas faster than you can stand behind them, and the cross asks you to answer for them. |
| 4.4 The Liar | You may tell a tidy story that is not yet true, and others will test it until it holds. |
| 4.5 Seduction | A convincing answer draws people in, and the cross asks whether your formula deserves the trust it attracts. |
| 4.6 Excess | You can pile on more explanation than anyone asked for, and learning when enough is enough is the work. |
Living the Revolution cross
At work
Revolution people tend to be the ones who say the process is broken, and then are asked to fix it. Work goes best when the problem is real and shared, not just yours, and when you can bring a worked-out alternative rather than only the complaint. Watch for the pull to push harder when the group is not ready; timing is part of the craft here.
In relationships
Close relationships are where the cross is tested first. A partner or friend may be the first person who needs something to change, or the first person you try to change. Ask which it is. The Left Angle works through the other person, so the question is less what you want to fix and more what the two of you are able to build differently.
In decisions
Revolution gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Not every unfairness is yours to overturn, and not every formula is ready to share. Decide the way your Type and Authority tell you to, and let the larger changes come from decisions you can stand behind.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let the change you bring come from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Revolution cross is misread
"Revolution means I am meant to tear things down"
"I am a rebel, so people should follow my lead"
"The Gates in my cross are all I need for the Channels"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 49: What principle, rule or habit around you has stopped working, and who else feels it?
- Gate 4: What answer are you holding right now that you have not yet tested on anyone?
- Gate 14: Where is your energy going this week, and is it going toward something that serves more than you?
- Gate 8: What is the honest thing you could say that you have been holding back, and who would be the right person to say it to?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Revolution
What is the Left Angle Cross of Revolution?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 49, 4, 14 and 8. Its theme is change that people need, with a principle, a formula, energy and a voice, worked out through relationships rather than alone.
Which Revolution rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 49/4 | 14/8 is Revolution 1, with Principles as your Personality Sun. 4/49 | 8/14 is Revolution 2, with Formulization as your Personality Sun.
Why is it called Revolution if Gate 49 is named Principles?
Gate 49 has two names. Principles is the name of the Gate, and Revolution is the name of its hexagram. The cross takes its name from the hexagram, and the Gate name tells you what the revolution is about.
What do Holding Together and Possession in Great Measure mean for Revolution?
Gate 8, Contribution, carries Holding Together and sits in the Throat. Gate 14, Power Skills, carries Possession in Great Measure and sits in the Sacral. They are opposites and the Design pair, so a Gate that gives its voice to the group meets a Gate that holds resources in the Sacral.
Does the cross decide my Type or Authority?
No. None of its Gates pair up inside the cross to make a Channel, so nothing fixes your Type or Authority. Those come from your whole chart, and the cross only describes the theme of your purpose.
What do Popular discontent, Platform and Organization describe in Revolution?
They are lines 3, 4 and 5 of Gate 49, Principles, the Solar Plexus Gate of the cross. Read in order they sketch how a crowd's unrest finds a stage and then a structure. Revolution asks you to live that sequence through other people, not around a private aim.
