Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression

The Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 1, 2, 4 and 49, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path where the G Center leads, with answers and principles on the Design side, shaped by four lines.

Simple way to think about it: Self-Expression is a lighthouse keeper's job. Two lamps burn in the same tower, one that says where you stand and one that says where you are headed, and below them a smaller room holds the logbook and the rules. The ships see only the light.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (1/2 | 4/49). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

Three Centers hold the four Gates. Gates 1 and 2 are both in the G Center, Gate 4 is in the Ajna and Gate 49 is in the Solar Plexus. The conscious pair, 1 and 2, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx carries, and the Design pair, 4 and 49, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Explanation.

Self-Expression is your conscious Sun and The Direction of the Self your conscious Earth, so both G Center Gates sit on the side you know. You feel identity and direction directly. Formulization and Principles run on the Design side, which is why others may see a gift for answers and a firm sense of what is right before you do.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 1: Self-Expression

Gate 1, Self-Expression, is the conscious Sun and gives the cross its name. It sits in the G Center, and its hexagram is The Creative. It completes Channel 1-8, Inspiration, with Gate 8 in the Throat. Its lines run from Creation is independent of will and Love is light to The energy to attract society and Objectivity. The fourth, Aloneness as the medium of creativity, is fixed in this cross. The creative current here asks for solitude, and the work comes out of time spent alone.

Gate 2: The Direction of the Self

Gate 2, The Direction of the Self, is the conscious Earth and also sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Receptive. It completes Channel 2-14, The Beat, with Gate 14 in the Sacral. Its lines move from Intuition and Genius to Intelligent application and Fixation, and the fourth, Secretiveness, is the one this cross always carries. Where Gate 1 creates, Gate 2 receives and steers. The direction you take is kept close, and the cross treats that privacy as part of the design rather than a defect.

Gate 4: Formulization

Gate 4, Formulization, is the Design Sun, lived without thinking. It sits in the Ajna, and its hexagram is Youthful Folly. It completes Channel 4-63, Logic, with Gate 63 in the Head. Its lines run from Pleasure and Acceptance to Seduction and Excess. Pleasure, the first, is fixed here, so the mind that formulates answers begins by enjoying the question. Others may see you work out a solution with evident delight before you realize you have been working at all.

Gate 49: Principles

Gate 49, Principles, is the Design Earth and the cross's only Solar Plexus Gate. Its hexagram is Revolution. It completes Channel 19-49, Synthesis, with Gate 19 in the Root, a Tribal circuit Channel. Its lines move from The law of necessity and The last resort to Organization and Attraction. The first, The law of necessity, is fixed in this cross. At the base of the design is a sense that some things have to change because they must, and it works through feeling, which means it is rarely hurried.

Both conscious Gates in the G Center

The G Center holds identity, direction and love, and it is the sense of being in the correct place. Gates 1 and 2 are two of its Gates, and in this cross both are on the Personality side. So who you are and where you are going are the two things you know most clearly about yourself.

Gate 1 reaches the Throat through Channel 1-8, and Gate 2 the Sacral through Channel 2-14. Neither Channel is closed by the cross itself, because Gates 8 and 14 are not in it. The G stays a source, and its output depends on what the rest of your chart connects.

The mind and the feelings on the Design side

The Design pair puts the Ajna and the Solar Plexus under the surface. Both are awareness Centers: the Ajna for concepts, opinions and certainty, and the Solar Plexus for emotions and waves. In this cross both are lived without effort and without being watched.

That gives the cross a particular rhythm. The conscious side is stable and quiet; the Design side is clever and emotional. You may find that your answers arrive through enjoyment and your principles through feeling, and that neither follows a schedule you set.

Four Gates, four Channels, none closed

Each Gate here leads to a different Center: Gate 1 to the Throat, Gate 2 to the Sacral, Gate 4 to the Head and Gate 49 to the Root. The Channels belong to the Individual circuit (1-8 and 2-14), the Collective (4-63) and the Tribal (19-49).

No two of the cross's own Gates form a Channel, so the cross fixes neither your Type nor your Authority. It is an unusually open design: four reaching Gates that wait for your chart to finish them, and a reason to read the Channels you do have before drawing conclusions about the cross.

Why the Self-Expression is a Juxtaposition cross

In Self-Expression the fixed position is the creative one, held for life. It does not rotate into the helper or the observer. You carry the same four lines throughout, and the task is to protect the time alone that the cross asks for while still sharing what comes out of it. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Self-Expression cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Self-Expression cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 1.4 Aloneness as the medium of creativityYour creativity needs time alone, so solitude is where your best expression comes from, not a retreat from it.
Personality Earth: Gate 2.4 SecretivenessYour sense of direction is private, kept close and shown only to the people you trust.
Design Sun: Gate 4.1 PleasureBelow awareness you formulate answers with pleasure, enjoying the question as much as the solution.
Design Earth: Gate 49.1 The law of necessityAt your base you sense what is necessary, and your principles start with what has to change.

Living the Self-Expression cross

At work

The cross suits creative and independent work: writing, design, craft, strategy, anything that rewards a long stretch of uninterrupted time. Schedule that solitude. The Design side supplies answers and principles, so you may be asked to be the person who knows what to do. Say what you can see, then step away again.

In relationships

People close to you may find the privacy hard. The cross keeps its direction to itself, and a partner can feel shut out of something they are meant to share. Tell them what you need, which is time alone, and what it is for. A short explanation does more than a week of silence.

In decisions

Direction and creation both feel certain at the G Center, but certainty there is not the same as an Authority. The cross does not fix your Type or Authority. Decide with the Type and Authority the rest of your chart gives you, and let the cross show you what you tend to want.

Let the cross describe how you create and steer, and your Type and Authority decide which of those paths to take. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Self-Expression cross is misread

"Self-Expression means I am meant to be on a stage"

The fixed line on the conscious Sun is the fourth of Gate 1, Aloneness as the medium of creativity. The expression this cross describes is formed in solitude. Whether it is ever shown on a stage is your decision.

"Secretiveness means I have something to hide"

Secretiveness is the canon title of Gate 2's fourth line, the one this cross always carries. It describes a direction kept close to the chest, because it is easily knocked off course. It is not a character judgment.

"It is just the Left Angle Cross of Defiance"

Defiance has the same four Gates, but as a Left Angle cross it is lived with the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 or 6/3 Profile and worked out through others. Self-Expression is the 4/1 only, with all four lines fixed from birth.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 1: How much time alone does your best work actually need?
  2. Gate 2: Who do you trust with the direction you are taking?
  3. Gate 4: What question have you recently enjoyed working on for its own sake?
  4. Gate 49: What do you feel has to change, whether or not anyone else agrees?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows whether Gate 8, 14, 63 or 19 completes a Channel for you, and what your Type and Authority are. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 1, 2, 4 and 49, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path where identity and direction lead, with answers and principles on the Design side.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression?

They are 1.4 Aloneness as the medium of creativity as the Personality Sun, 2.4 Secretiveness as the Personality Earth, 4.1 Pleasure as the Design Sun, and 49.1 The law of necessity as the Design Earth. The 4/1 Profile fixes all four.

Which Centers does Self-Expression involve?

Three: the G Center through Gates 1 and 2, the Ajna through Gate 4 and the Solar Plexus through Gate 49. The Ajna and the Solar Plexus are awareness Centers, and the Solar Plexus is also a motor.

Do both G Center Gates sit on the conscious side?

Yes, here they are. Gate 1 is the Personality Sun and Gate 2 the Personality Earth, so identity and direction are the parts you are most aware of. The Design side holds Gates 4 and 49 instead.

What does Secretiveness, line 4 of Gate 2, do inside Self-Expression?

Gate 2 is the conscious Earth and sits in the G Center, the Center of identity and direction. Its fixed fourth line, Secretiveness, keeps the sense of direction close instead of announced, which sits beside the solitude of the Sun's line 1.4.

Is there a Channel among the Gates of Self-Expression?

No. Gate 1 pairs with Gate 8, Gate 2 with Gate 14, Gate 4 with Gate 63 and Gate 49 with Gate 19, and none of those partners is in the cross. That is why it does not fix Type or Authority.
