Left Angle Cross of Refinement
The Left Angle Cross of Refinement is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 33, 19, 2 and 1. It is about shaping who you are through other people: identity and direction in the G Center, wanting and drive in the Root, and a Throat that learns when to stay private.
Simple way to think about it: Refining is what a craftsperson does once the rough shape exists. The form is already there; the work is cutting away what does not belong and polishing what does. This cross asks the same of a life, and it asks for a second pair of eyes, because few of us can judge our own finish.

Look for the line that reads Left Angle Cross of Refinement. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (33/19 | 2/1). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Refinement cross on the BodyGraph
Look for three Centers. The G Center in the middle of the chart holds both Design Gates, 1 and 2. The Root at the base holds Gate 19, and the Throat above the G Center holds Gate 33. None of the four Gates sits in the Head, Ajna, Spleen, Heart, Solar Plexus or Sacral.

The two rotations of the Refinement cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Refinement 1 (33/19 | 2/1)
With Privacy as your conscious Sun, the purpose starts with what you keep to yourself and what you finally decide to say. Wanting, the conscious Earth, is the need underneath it. On the Design side, The Direction of the Self leads and Self-Expression grounds it, so a quiet sense of where you are headed shapes your creative work before you notice. This rotation falls in the Civilization quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Form.
The Refinement 2 (19/33 | 1/2)
Here Wanting is the conscious Sun: the pull toward what you need comes first, and Privacy, the conscious Earth, keeps asking when to say it. On the Design side, Self-Expression leads and The Direction of the Self grounds it, so creative energy is the first thing other people notice about you. This rotation falls in the Mutation quarter, Purpose fulfilled through Transformation.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 33: Privacy
Gate 33, Privacy, is a Throat Gate, so it can speak, and its hexagram is Retreat. Its lines run from Avoidance and Surrender to Timing and Dissociation, a fair map of how it works: step back, then choose when to return. It completes Channel 13-33, The Prodigal, with Gate 13 in the G Center, a design of a witness. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of what you hold back and what you finally say. As an Earth it grounds another theme in discretion. In rotation 1 it is your conscious Sun, so the cross opens with the choice of what to keep private.
Gate 19: Wanting
Gate 19, Wanting, sits in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive, and its hexagram is Approach. Its lines begin with Interdependence and Service and end with Sacrifice and The Recluse, so wanting here is tied to other people from the first line. It completes Channel 19-49, Synthesis, with Gate 49 in the Solar Plexus, a design of sensitivity, on the Tribal circuit. As a Sun it makes your purpose the question of what you need and who you need it from. As an Earth it adds a steady need underneath another theme, a pull toward closeness that the cross asks you to be honest about.
Gate 2: The Direction of the Self
Gate 2, The Direction of the Self, sits in the G Center, and its hexagram is The Receptive. It completes Channel 2-14, The Beat, with Gate 14 in the Sacral, a design of being a keeper of keys. Its lines, from Intuition and Genius to Patience and Secretiveness, describe a direction that is received more than chosen. Here it is the Design Sun in rotation 1 and the Design Earth in rotation 2. Because it sits beside Gate 1 in the same Center, the Design side of this cross is all identity: who you are and where you are headed, carried below awareness.
Gate 1: Self-Expression
Gate 1, Self-Expression, is another G Center Gate and carries the hexagram The Creative. Its first line says creation is independent of will and its fourth says aloneness is the medium of creativity, which explains why this Gate asks for room. It completes Channel 1-8, Inspiration, with Gate 8 in the Throat, a design of a creative role model. It is the Design Earth in rotation 1 and the Design Sun in rotation 2, so the creative pull works beneath what you consciously choose, and other people may see you create before you have decided to.
Identity in the Design, drive and voice in the Personality
The Design half of this cross sits entirely in the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Gate 1 and Gate 2 are an opposite pair, one creative and one receptive. The Personality half lives elsewhere: Gate 19 in the Root and Gate 33 in the Throat, the drive to want and the voice that decides when to speak.
That gives the cross an unusual split. Who you are shows up through the Design, quietly and mostly without effort. What you work with consciously is wanting and privacy: what you need, and how much of it you tell. Each pair also appears on its own elsewhere. Gates 1 and 2 are a pair in the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx, and Gates 19 and 33 are a pair in the Right Angle Cross of The Four Ways. A Left Angle cross takes one pair from each and points them at other people.
A cross with no awareness Center in it
The awareness Centers are the Ajna, the Spleen and the Solar Plexus. None of the four Gates in this cross sits in any of them. The Gates belong to identity, pressure and expression instead, so the cross does not hand you a ready-made way of sensing people or reading a room.
That does not mean those Centers are empty in your chart; what is defined there depends on the whole chart. It means the cross itself leans on others for that sensing. Gate 19 completes Channel 19-49 only when Gate 49, in the Solar Plexus, arrives from your own chart or from the person next to you. This is the Left Angle at work: what the cross lacks in sensing, other people supply.
Three circuits and a small group
Each pair of Gates reaches a different circuit. Gates 1 and 2 belong to Individual Channels, Gate 19 to a Tribal one and Gate 33 to a Collective one. Nothing in the cross keeps to a single circuit, so the themes of making, belonging and sharing all run through it.
Three of the four partner Channels, 1-8, 2-14 and 13-33, are ones the canon links to the Penta, the shared aura of three to five people who spend regular time together, such as a family. Whether that matters in your life depends on who your partner Gates come from. If you often find yourself in small groups where someone carries the missing Gate, it is the same pattern.
Why the Refinement is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Refinement that fits the name. A finish is rarely something you give yourself. It comes from friction, feedback and company, and the people around you act as the file that smooths the edges. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 33.5 means Gate 33, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Refinement cross.
Refinement 1: Personality Sun in Gate 33, Privacy
| 33.1 Avoidance | You protect your purpose by avoiding what drains it, and others learn your limits by watching what you skip. |
|---|---|
| 33.2 Surrender | You give way gracefully at the right moment, and that surrender keeps you close to people without losing yourself. |
| 33.3 Spirit | Your inner life has a spirit of its own, and people sense it even when you keep the details to yourself. |
| 33.4 Dignity | You keep your dignity by choosing what to reveal, and people respect you more when you do not overshare. |
| 33.5 Timing | The right moment matters more than the right words, and you learn to wait for an opening others can use. |
| 33.6 Dissociation | You step far enough back to see clearly, and the risk is staying away longer than people can wait. |
Refinement 2: Personality Sun in Gate 19, Wanting
| 19.1 Interdependence | You see early that your needs and other people's needs are tied together, and you stop pretending otherwise. |
|---|---|
| 19.2 Service | You show what you want by what you do for others, and being of use is how you stay connected. |
| 19.3 Dedication | You commit fully to the few people and causes you choose, and the cross asks you to choose with care. |
| 19.4 The Team Player | You want to belong to something, and you fit into a group by making its goals your own. |
| 19.5 Sacrifice | You give up something real for others, and the risk is never saying what you needed in return. |
| 19.6 The Recluse | You pull away to learn what you actually want, then come back knowing it better than before. |
Living the Refinement cross
At work
The name points to work done after the rough draft exists: editing, finishing, noticing what a project does not need. It goes best when you are brought in at that stage and trusted to cut. Because Gate 19 is a need and Gate 33 is privacy, you may also have to say plainly that you do your best work with some space, and ask the people around you to give it.
In relationships
Wanting and privacy pull in different directions, and the cross asks you to let both be true. You may need real closeness and real time alone, and the people near you will not know which one you need unless you say so. Because the cross works through others, partners and close friends act as your editors: they show you what is working in how you love and what could be trimmed.
In decisions
Refinement gives your life a theme, not a rule for choosing. It helps to notice whether a decision is really about what you want, which is Gate 19, or about what you are not ready to share, which is Gate 33. Then let your inner Authority make the call.
Decide with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your edges be smoothed by the people you choose to stay close to. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Refinement cross is misread
"Refinement means I am supposed to be perfect"
"Privacy means I should hide"
"Because I carry Gates 1 and 2, I have Channel 1-8 or 2-14"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 33: What have you been keeping private that would be better said now, or the other way round?
- Gate 19: What do you want right now that you have not told the person who could help?
- Gate 2: Which direction have you been drifting toward quietly, without ever deciding it?
- Gate 1: What did you make or start recently without being asked, and who noticed?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Refinement
What is the Left Angle Cross of Refinement?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 33, 19, 2 and 1. Its theme is shaping identity, need and discretion through other people, with the Design side held in the G Center.
Which Refinement rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 33/19 | 2/1 is Refinement 1, with Privacy as your Personality Sun. 19/33 | 1/2 is Refinement 2, with Wanting as your Personality Sun.
How do the hexagrams Retreat and Approach work together in Refinement?
Gate 33, Privacy, carries Retreat and sits in the Throat. Gate 19, Wanting, carries Approach and sits in the Root. In Refinement 1 the Personality Sun is the stepping back and in Refinement 2 it is the moving toward, while the Gates themselves stay the same.
Which Channels can the Refinement Gates complete?
Four, each needing a partner Gate from elsewhere: 13-33 with Gate 13 in the G Center, 19-49 with Gate 49 in the Solar Plexus, 2-14 with Gate 14 in the Sacral and 1-8 with Gate 8 in the Throat.
What do The Recluse and Dissociation say about the top lines of Refinement?
Line 6 of Gate 19, Wanting, is The Recluse, and line 6 of Gate 33, Privacy, is Dissociation. These two opposite Gates make up the conscious pair of Refinement. In a Left Angle cross that is lived through other people, both top lines are the ones that ask for room to step away.
Can I have Refinement with a 4/1 Profile?
No. A 4/1 Profile with the same four Gates carries a Juxtaposition cross instead, called Retreat for the first rotation and Need for the second. Refinement belongs to the Left Angle Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.
