Juxtaposition Cross of Need

The Juxtaposition Cross of Need is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 19, 33, 1 and 2, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path between wanting and withdrawing: a drive to connect, a private place to retreat, and a creative self underneath.

Simple way to think about it: Need is the lighthouse keeper who tends a lamp for ships, then shuts the door and sits alone with the sea. Both halves are the job: being seen from a distance, and being left alone.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Need. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (19/33 | 1/2). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

Wanting is your conscious Sun and Privacy your conscious Earth, so the Root and the Throat are on the side you know: the pull toward others and the pull to withdraw. Self-Expression and The Direction of the Self sit together on the Design side. Identity and creative direction run below awareness, and others may see them in you first.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 19: Wanting

Gate 19, Wanting, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Approach. It completes Channel 19-49, the Channel of Synthesis, with Gate 49 in the Solar Plexus, a Tribal Channel in the Ego group. As a Sun it is the visible pull of the cross, a wish to be close to others, felt as pressure. Its fourth line, The Team Player, is the one every Need chart carries here: the wanting is aimed at belonging to something shared.

Gate 33: Privacy

Gate 33, Privacy, is the conscious Earth and the cross's only Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Retreat. It completes Channel 13-33, the Channel of The Prodigal, with Gate 13 in the G Center, a Collective Channel that reaches the Throat. As an Earth it grounds the cross in the need to step back and take stock. Its fourth line, Dignity, is fixed in this cross, so the retreat is not an escape. It is a way of keeping your self-respect intact.

Gate 1: Self-Expression

Gate 1, Self-Expression, is the Design Sun and sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Creative. It completes Channel 1-8, the Channel of Inspiration, with Gate 8 in the Throat, an Individual Channel in the Knowing stream. Lived without thinking, it is creative energy that does not wait for permission. The first line, Creation is independent of will, is the line every chart with this cross carries: the work arrives on its own schedule, not because it was ordered.

Gate 2: The Direction of the Self

Gate 2, The Direction of the Self, is the Design Earth and also sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Receptive. It completes Channel 2-14, The Beat, with Gate 14 in the Sacral, an Individual Channel in the Knowing stream. It grounds the cross in a sense of where you are headed that is received, not planned. Its first line, Intuition, is fixed here: the direction is picked up as a felt knowing before there is any reason to give.

Both G Gates on the Design side

Gates 1 and 2 are the two Design Gates, and both sit in the G Center, which is identity, direction and love, and also the sense of correct place. In this cross they are the Design Sun and Earth, so the creative self and its direction are carried below conscious awareness.

Many people feel their identity as something they know and choose. Here it works the other way: Creation is independent of will, and the direction is Intuition. The more you try to decide who you are, the less it works. It tends to show itself when you are doing the thing.

The Throat reached from the G Center in two places

Gate 33 is in the Throat, and Gate 1 completes Channel 1-8, which also ends in the Throat. Gate 33's own Channel, 13-33, runs from the Throat to the G Center. So the cross touches the Throat directly, and two of its four Gates have routes between the G Center and the Throat.

Neither route is fixed, because the partners, Gates 8 and 13, are not part of this cross. But the pattern is clear: the creative self and the retreating self both look for a way to be said. When Gate 8 or 13 is also in your chart, the voice becomes defined.

The Root's one Gate, and what it is aimed at

Only one Gate is in the Root, the pressure Center: Gate 19, the Personality Sun. The Root is pressure and drive, the push to begin. Here that pressure is directed at others, toward the Solar Plexus through Channel 19-49 in the Tribal circuit.

So the one source of drive in this cross is social. It wants to connect, to belong and to be included. Gate 33's retreat balances it. The cross asks you to want people and to need distance, and does not treat either as the mistake.

Why the Need is a Juxtaposition cross

Need is a single, held position. The pull toward people and the pull away from them are both fixed in the four lines, and no other Profile will change them. Being a Juxtaposition cross means you do not resolve the tension by choosing a side. The work is to learn when each half is the true one. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Need cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Need cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 19.4 The Team PlayerYour wanting is aimed at belonging to something shared, and you give most when you feel like part of a team.
Personality Earth: Gate 33.4 DignityYour need for distance is about dignity, a way of keeping your self-respect when things get loud.
Design Sun: Gate 1.1 Creation is independent of willBelow awareness your creativity arrives on its own schedule, and effort alone cannot call it up.
Design Earth: Gate 2.1 IntuitionYour sense of direction comes as a felt knowing first, long before you have a reason to give.

Living the Need cross

At work

People with Need often do their best work in two modes: collaborating with a team they respect, and then alone to make something of it. Creative fields, research, writing, design and craft suit that rhythm. The Design Sun's first line says the best ideas arrive unscheduled, so build slack into deadlines when you can. Ask for a role that allows both visibility and quiet, rather than constant meetings or constant solitude.

In relationships

In close relationships the cross can look like a swing between closeness and distance. Partners may feel wanted one week and shut out the next. The retreat is not rejection: Gate 33 is Privacy, and its fixed fourth line is Dignity. Saying aloud that you are stepping back to recover, and that you will return, makes it easier to be close afterward.

In decisions

The G Center is identity and direction, but it is not an Authority by itself, and the Root's pressure is not a decision. Treat the pull toward people and the pull to withdraw as information. Then decide with your Type's Strategy and your Authority, and give the intuitive direction time to show itself.

Choose with your Strategy and your inner Authority, then let the cross tell you whether you need company or space to carry the choice out. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Need cross is misread

"Need means I am needy"

Gate 19 is called Wanting, and its hexagram is Approach. It is the Root's pressure to move toward others, and its fixed line here, The Team Player, points to belonging, not to dependence.

"Privacy means I should hide"

Gate 33's hexagram is Retreat, and its fixed fourth line is Dignity. The retreat is a way of keeping your self-respect and taking stock, and it is meant to be followed by coming back.

"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Refinement"

The four Gates are the same, but the Profile is not. Need comes only with 4/1, which fixes every line and keeps the path in one position. Refinement is the same Gates worked out through other people.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 19: Who do you want to be near right now, and what do you want to be doing together?
  2. Gate 33: What would stepping back protect that staying involved would cost you?
  3. Gate 1: What have you made lately that came on its own, without being forced?
  4. Gate 2: Where does your sense of direction point when you stop explaining it?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows how your four fixed lines work with your Type, Authority and defined Channels, and whether Gate 49, 13, 8 or 14 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Need

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Need?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 19, 33, 1 and 2, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path between wanting and withdrawing, with a creative self and a received sense of direction underneath.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Need?

They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 19.4 The Team Player as the Personality Sun, 33.4 Dignity as the Personality Earth, 1.1 Creation is independent of will as the Design Sun and 2.1 Intuition as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.

Why are Gates 1 and 2 both in the G Center?

They are the Design pair, and both belong to the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. In Need they are the Design Sun and Earth, so the creative self and its direction work below conscious awareness.

What does The Team Player, line 4 of Gate 19, do as the Personality Sun of Need?

Gate 19 is the cross's only Root Gate, so the wanting arrives with the pressure and drive of a motor Center. The fixed fourth line, The Team Player, turns that need toward a group instead of a lone pursuit, and every chart with this cross carries it.

How many of Need's Gates reach the Throat?

Gate 33 sits in the Throat itself. Gate 1 completes Channel 1-8 with Gate 8 in the Throat, and Gate 33 completes Channel 13-33 with Gate 13 in the G Center. Whether either Channel is defined depends on whether Gate 8 or 13 is in your chart.

How does Need handle both company and space?

Through two fixed lines. Gate 19.4, The Team Player, points the wanting toward belonging to something shared, and Gate 33.4, Dignity, makes the retreat a way of keeping self-respect. Both are carried in every chart with this cross.
