Left Angle Cross of Prevention

The Left Angle Cross of Prevention is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 15, 10, 17 and 18. It is about how you behave among people, the views you form, and the instinct for what needs fixing, all aimed at heading off trouble before it grows, and worked out through others.

Simple way to think about it: A good mechanic hears the rattle before the car breaks down. Nothing is wrong yet, and the mechanic cannot always say why the sound matters. Prevention is that kind of attention: you notice what is slightly off in people and plans, and the work is learning when to speak and when to wait.

The Prevention cross on the BodyGraph

Three Centers hold the four Gates: Gates 10 and 15 in the G Center, Gate 17 in the Ajna and Gate 18 in the Spleen. None is a motor, and two of the three, the Ajna and the Spleen, are awareness Centers. The conscious pair, 10 and 15, also appears in the Right Angle Cross of The Vessel of Love, and the Design pair, 17 and 18, in the Right Angle Cross of Service.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 15: Extremes

Gate 15, Extremes, sits in the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Its hexagram is Modesty, which tells you what the Gate is trying to do with extremes. It completes Channel 5-15, Rhythm, with Gate 5 in the Sacral. Its lines run from Duty and Influence to Ego inflation, The Wallflower, Sensitivity and Self-defense. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of keeping to a middle course. As an Earth it grounds another theme in steadiness.

Gate 10: The Behavior of the Self

Gate 10, The Behavior of the Self, also sits in the G Center, and its hexagram is Treading. It can complete three Channels: 10-20, Awakening, with Gate 20 in the Throat, 10-34, Exploration, with Gate 34 in the Sacral, and 10-57, Perfected Form, with Gate 57 in the Spleen. Its lines run from Modesty and The Hermit to The Heretic and The Role Model. As a Sun it makes behavior your theme. As an Earth it grounds you in how you act.

Gate 17: Opinions

Gate 17, Opinions, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts and certainty. Its hexagram is Following. It completes Channel 17-62, Acceptance, with Gate 62 in the Throat. Its lines run from Openness and Discrimination to No human is an island and The Bodhisattva. It sits on the Design side in both rotations, so your opinions form below awareness, and other people may hear a view from you before you know you hold it.

Gate 18: Correction

Gate 18, Correction, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct that speaks once and in the present. Its hexagram is Work on What Has Been Spoilt. It completes Channel 18-58, Judgment, with Gate 58 in the Root. Its lines move from Conservatism and Terminal disease through The Zealot and The Incompetent to Therapy and Buddhahood. It is also on the Design side in both rotations, a quiet instinct for what needs repair that you may feel before you can name it.

Two awareness Centers and no motor

Not one of the four Gates sits in a motor Center. The G Center is about identity and direction, the Ajna is mental awareness, and the Spleen is the awareness Center of instinct. Two of the three Centers are built to notice, not to push.

That fits a cross called Prevention. Nothing in it starts a project on its own. The Gate partners that bring a motor are Gate 5 and Gate 34 in the Sacral, and Gate 58 in the Root, and they have to come from your chart or from other people. Until then the cross is a way of seeing what needs doing, and the energy to do it is something you borrow from the people around you.

One Gate that can join three Channels

Gate 10 is the only Gate in this cross with more than one partner. It can complete Channel 10-20 through the Throat, Channel 10-34 through the Sacral, or Channel 10-57 through the Spleen. All three are Individual circuit Channels, in the Integration or Centering sub-circuits.

So the conscious side of Prevention has three different outlets for behavior, and which one is available depends on who you meet. One person lets your conduct become speech, another lets it become drive, a third connects it to instinct. Gate 10 is the clearest case of this cross working through other people.

A Design side that forms views and spots what is broken

Gates 17 and 18 are the unconscious half of Prevention, and both belong to the Collective circuit in the Understanding sub-circuit. Gate 17 forms opinions. Gate 18 feels what is off and wants it put right. Together they are a habit of holding a view and sensing the flaw in it.

Because both work below awareness, other people may feel corrected before you meant anything. The Left Angle point is that the habit becomes useful when someone asks for it. A correction nobody wanted lands as criticism. The same correction, offered to someone who is listening, prevents the trouble it noticed.

Why the Prevention is a Left Angle cross

A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Prevention that means what you see coming matters only when someone can use it. The cross is lived in the conversations where a quiet word changes what happens next. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 15.5 means Gate 15, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Prevention cross.

Prevention 1: Personality Sun in Gate 15, Extremes
15.1 DutyYou take your duty seriously, and the cross asks you to choose which duties are really yours.
15.2 InfluenceYour influence on others works quietly, through who you are rather than anything you push.
15.3 Ego inflationYou can swell with your own importance, and people around you help bring you back to size.
15.4 The WallflowerYou hang back at the edge of the room, and that distance lets you see what others miss.
15.5 SensitivityYou feel the mood of a group keenly, and the cross asks you to protect that sensitivity.
15.6 Self-defenseYou guard yourself against being pulled into extremes, and that defense keeps your course steady.
Prevention 2: Personality Sun in Gate 10, The Behavior of the Self
10.1 ModestyYou carry yourself with modesty, and people trust how you behave before they know what you do.
10.2 The HermitYou pull back to be alone when you need to, and you return clearer about how to act.
10.3 The MartyrYou take on the burden of others' mistakes, and the cross asks you to choose which are yours.
10.4 The OpportunistYou notice which moment favors you and act on it, and you read people to do so.
10.5 The HereticYou break the usual rules of behavior, and some people will resist you for it.
10.6 The Role ModelYou become an example in how you act, and people copy what you do more than what you say.

Living the Prevention cross

At work

Prevention people are often the ones who flag the problem early, the risk in the plan or the detail that will not hold. Work goes best where that is welcome. Say what you noticed once, plainly, and with a reason, then let the team decide. Repeating a warning nobody asked for turns a useful instinct into noise.

In relationships

In relationships the cross works through the other person, so how you act with them sets the tone for what you can say. A partner who trusts your conduct will listen to your corrections. Notice when you fix something that was not yours to fix; the line between caring for someone and managing them is the one this cross keeps testing.

In decisions

Prevention gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Seeing the flaw in a plan is not the same as knowing you should stop it. You do not have to act on every warning you feel.

Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your warnings and your conduct follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Prevention cross is misread

"Prevention means I must stop bad things from happening"

The cross notices what could go wrong, and it is lived through other people. It is not a duty to guard everyone. Whether and when you speak is still a matter for your Type and Authority.

"Opinions and Correction mean I am always right"

Gate 17 forms views and Gate 18 senses what needs repair, but both work below awareness. Line 3 of Gate 18 is The Zealot, and Line 4 is The Incompetent. A strong sense of what is wrong can still be mistaken.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 15: Where are you pushing to one extreme right now, and what would the middle look like?
  2. Gate 10: How did you carry yourself in your last difficult conversation, and what did it say about you?
  3. Gate 17: What opinion do you hold today that you did not choose, and where did it come from?
  4. Gate 18: What did you sense was off lately, and who could actually use what you noticed?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Prevention rotation you carry, your Sun line, and whether Gate 5, 20, 34, 57, 62 or 58 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Prevention

What is the Left Angle Cross of Prevention?

It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 10, 15, 17 and 18. Its theme is conduct, opinion and the instinct for what needs fixing, used to head off trouble and worked out through other people.

Which Prevention rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 15/10 | 17/18 is Prevention 1, with Extremes as your Personality Sun. 10/15 | 18/17 is Prevention 2, with The Behavior of the Self as your Personality Sun.

Why does a cross called Prevention hold a Gate about work on what has been spoilt?

Gate 18, Correction, carries the hexagram Work on What Has Been Spoilt and sits in the Spleen. Gate 17, Opinions, sits in the Ajna with the hexagram Following. Prevention places a Gate about repair beside a Gate about following, and both are Collective circuit Gates.

Which Channels can Gate 10 complete?

Three. Channel 10-20, Awakening, joins the G Center to the Throat. Channel 10-34, Exploration, joins it to the Sacral. Channel 10-57, Perfected Form, joins it to the Spleen. All three belong to the Individual circuit.

Why are Gates 17 and 18 always on the Design side?

In both rotations of Prevention, Gates 17 and 18 take the Design Sun and the Design Earth. Only the order changes. Opinions and Correction therefore work below awareness, while Gates 10 and 15 are the conscious Sun and Earth.

What do the two quarters mean for Prevention?

The quarter follows the conscious Sun. Extremes leads Prevention 1 in the Civilization quarter, purpose fulfilled through Form. The Behavior of the Self leads Prevention 2 in the Mutation quarter, purpose fulfilled through Transformation.
