Right Angle Cross of Service
The Right Angle Cross of Service is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 17, 18, 58 and 52: Opinions, Correction, Vitality and Stillness. Its theme is spotting what could work better and having the energy to improve it, lived through your own experience. Everyone with this cross has Channel 18-58 defined.
Simple way to think about it: Service is the person in the workshop who picks up a tool, looks it over and says what is wrong with it. Sometimes that is annoying. More often it is the reason the next job goes well.

The Service cross on the BodyGraph
Service has a built-in Channel, 18-58, joining the Spleen to the Root. Every rotation carries both of its Gates, so it is always defined. The other two Gates, 17 and 52, reach toward the Throat and the Sacral, and they need partners from elsewhere in your chart.

The four rotations of the Service cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 to 4.
The Service 1 (17/18 | 58/52)
With Opinions as your conscious Sun, service starts with a view. You form clear ideas about how things should go, and Correction as your Earth keeps them tied to what needs fixing. The Design side runs Vitality and Stillness underneath, a steady energy and calm that others may sense before you do.
The Service 2 (52/58 | 17/18)
Here Stillness is the conscious theme. You know when to hold back and when to speak, and Vitality as your Earth keeps that stillness from going flat. Opinions and Correction run on the Design side, so a habit of seeing what could be better shapes you before you notice it.
The Service 3 (18/17 | 52/58)
With Correction as your conscious Sun, you see what is spoiled and feel responsible for it. Opinions as your Earth gives that sense a voice in the mind. Stillness and Vitality run underneath, balancing a need to rest against an appetite for life.
The Service 4 (58/52 | 18/17)
Vitality leads in this version. You bring energy and a joy in being alive, and Stillness as your conscious Earth teaches you to pace it. Correction and Opinions sit on the Design side, so you often fix things before you can say why you wanted to.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 17: Opinions
Gate 17, Opinions, sits in the Ajna and its hexagram is Following. It forms views by watching patterns and asking what follows from them. As a Sun, your purpose involves having a clear opinion and knowing when to share it. As an Earth, it gives another theme a mental frame. Its lines include Openness and Discrimination, which is a good pair: take it in, then sort it. Its Channel is Acceptance, 17-62, which runs to Gate 62, Details, in the Throat. An opinion is only useful once the details are there to back it, and the Throat is where they get said.
Gate 18: Correction
Gate 18, Correction, sits in the Spleen and its hexagram is Work on What Has Been Spoilt. It sees what is not right and wants to repair it. As a Sun, your purpose carries an eye for what needs improving. As an Earth, it adds a sharp, honest sense of what has gone wrong. Its lines range from Conservatism to Buddhahood, from keeping things as they are to bringing real healing. Its Channel is Judgment, 18-58, which runs to Gate 58, Vitality, in the Root. Both Gates are in this cross, so this Channel is always defined.
Gate 58: Vitality
Gate 58, Vitality, sits in the Root and its hexagram is The Joyous. It is the drive to improve things, fed by enjoying life. As a Sun, your purpose is powered by a hunger that does not run out. As an Earth, it gives another theme a pulse of energy. Its lines run from Love of life to Carried away, a reminder that joy can overshoot. Its Channel is Judgment, 18-58, which runs to Gate 18, Correction, in the Spleen. Energy at one end and a critical eye at the other make a Channel the canon calls a design of insatiability.
Gate 52: Stillness
Gate 52, Stillness, sits in the Root and its hexagram is Keeping Still. It is the ability to hold still so that a thing can get done, and it is the quiet half of the Root's drive. As a Sun, your purpose is carried by patience and concentration. As an Earth, it slows another theme enough to see it clearly. Its Channel is Concentration, 9-52, which runs from the Root to Gate 9, Focus, in the Sacral. It is a format energy Channel, one of the three that join the Root to the Sacral, and it needs a partner from outside this cross.
The Channel in every Service chart: Judgment
Gate 18 and Gate 58 are both in this cross, and together they make Channel 18-58, called Judgment. Every rotation carries both Gates, so everyone with Service has it defined. It joins the Spleen to the Root, which means both Centers are defined in you, however the rest of your chart looks.
In every rotation, one of the two Gates sits on your Personality side and the other on your Design side. So this Channel is always half conscious and half unconscious. You know part of the urge to improve things, and part of it works behind your back. The Channel is in the Collective circuit, and the canon names it a design of insatiability, a drive to keep finding what could be better. Your Type still varies: Projectors, Generators, Manifesting Generators and Manifestors all occur with this cross.
Opinion in the mind, correction in the body
Service holds two awareness Centers, the Ajna and the Spleen. The Ajna is mental awareness: concepts, opinions and certainty. The Spleen is instinct and fear, in the present tense, and it speaks once. Gate 17 and Gate 18 face each other on the wheel, so one is a view you can state and the other is a feeling you cannot argue with.
That pairing can pull in two ways. A mind that is sure about how something should go can overrule an instinct that says something else. The cross asks you to notice which one is speaking. All three Channels this cross completes are in the Collective circuit, the Understanding group, so what you learn here is meant to be shared. Acceptance (17-62) carries it to the Throat. Judgment (18-58) feeds it with Root energy, and Concentration (9-52) steadies it.
Two Root Gates, one restless and one still
Gate 52 and Gate 58 are both in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive, and they are opposites on the wheel. Their hexagrams make the contrast clear: Keeping Still and The Joyous. One holds its ground, the other bounces. Service puts them on opposite sides of you, so one pushes and the other waits.
Gate 52 is also in a format energy Channel, Concentration, which joins the Root to the Sacral through Gate 9, from the Cross of Planning. A format Channel sets the pace for the circuit it sits in. If you have Gate 9 in your chart, your stillness gets a motor behind it. If you do not, the Root can feel like pressure with no outlet, and rest is part of the answer.
Why the Service is a Right Angle cross
A Right Angle cross is a personal destiny: the purpose works out through your own experience, and other people are not the point of it. For Service that matters, because a cross called Service can look like a life spent fixing things for others. It is not. You find out what is worth improving by living it yourself, and others benefit after. The Right Angle goes with seven Profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6. If your Profile is one of these, your cross is a Right Angle cross.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.4 means Gate 13, Line 4. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Service cross.

| 17.1 Openness | You stay open to other views before forming your own, and your opinions are better for it. |

| 17.4 The Personnel Manager | You act as a personnel manager of ideas, and you know which ones belong in the room. |

Service 2: Personality Sun in Gate 52, Stillness
| 52.1 Think before you speak | You think before you speak, and your stillness starts with holding back until you know. |
|---|---|
| 52.2 Concern | You feel concern for what you are keeping still about, and the cross asks you to trust that care. |
| 52.3 Controls | You control how much you move, and you learn when holding back helps and when it only delays. |

| 58.5 Defense | You defend what you have built, and the cross asks you to know what is worth defending. |
| 58.6 Carried away | You can get carried away by joy, and slowing down lets the improvement take hold. |
Living the Service cross
At work
Service people often see the gap between how a process runs and how it could run. Work goes best when you are asked for that view and then given room to act on it, not when you are told to keep quiet and comply. Roles in editing, quality, consulting, coaching, repair, design review or operations tend to fit. The Root pressure in the cross means you do your best work in bursts, with real time to be still between them.
In relationships
In close relationships the eye for correction can land on the people nearest you. A comment meant to help can sound like a verdict. Ask whether someone wants your view before you give it, and say what is working before you say what is not. Your drive to improve things is real and so is your warmth, but the person across from you needs to know you value them first.
In decisions
The cross shows you what is wrong, which is different from what to do about it. A strong opinion in the Ajna or a flash of instinct in the Spleen can feel like an answer. Both are information, and neither replaces the way your Type and Authority make choices.
Use your Type and your inner Authority for each choice, and let Service show you whether, looking back, the things you set out to improve were really yours to fix. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Service cross is misread
"Service means I should serve other people"
"I have to point out everything that is wrong"
"Channel 18-58 means I am a certain Type"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 17: What opinion have you been holding back that someone could actually use?
- Gate 18: What is spoiled in your life right now that you have not yet let yourself see?
- Gate 58: Where does your energy feel most alive, and when did you last follow it?
- Gate 52: What would happen if you waited one more day before acting on this?

FAQ: Right Angle Cross of Service
What is the Right Angle Cross of Service?
It is one of the 16 Right Angle Incarnation Crosses in Human Design, made of Gates 17, 18, 58 and 52. Its theme is seeing what is spoiled, forming a view and having the energy to improve it, lived through your own experience.
Which Service rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 17/18 | 58/52 is Service 1, 52/58 | 17/18 is Service 2, 18/17 | 52/58 is Service 3, and 58/52 | 18/17 is Service 4. The first number is your Personality Sun.
Does everyone with the Cross of Service have Channel 18-58?
Yes. Every rotation carries both Gate 18 and Gate 58, which together form Channel 18-58. That means the Spleen and the Root are defined in everyone with this cross. In every rotation, one Gate sits on the Personality side and the other on the Design side.
Does Terminal disease, a line of Gate 18, say anything about health?
No. It is the title of line 2 of Gate 18, Correction, between Conservatism and The Zealot. It names a line of the Gate, not a condition of anyone's body. Gate 18 sits in the Spleen, and its lines run from Conservatism to Buddhahood. For anything about your own health, talk to a doctor.
Why does Service have two Gates in the Root?
Gate 52, Stillness, and Gate 58, Vitality, both belong to the Root, and they are opposites on the wheel. The Root is the Center of pressure and drive, so the cross pairs holding still with an appetite for life.
What does Channel 17-62 add to the Cross of Service?
Gate 17 completes Acceptance, 17-62, which runs from the Ajna to Gate 62 in the Throat. That Gate belongs to the Cross of Maya. If you have Gate 62 defined, your opinions have a direct way out through the Throat.
