Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes

The Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 15, 10, 17 and 18, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of range and refinement: knowing the whole spread of human behavior, then forming opinions and corrections that help others do better.

Simple way to think about it: Extremes is a piano with every key in use. Most songs stay in the middle octaves, but this cross has played both ends, and that is what makes it believable when it says where the middle is.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (15/10 | 17/18). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Extremes cross on the BodyGraph

Three Centers hold the four Gates. Gates 15 and 10 sit side by side in the G Center, Gate 17 is in the Ajna and Gate 18 in the Spleen. The conscious pair, 10 and 15, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of The Vessel of Love carries; the Design pair, 17 and 18, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Service.

Extremes is your conscious Sun and The Behavior of the Self your conscious Earth, so how you act and how far you range are the part you know firsthand. Opinions and Correction run on the Design side, which means the views you hold and the fixes you reach for may be clearer to others than to you.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 15: Extremes

Gate 15, Extremes, is the conscious Sun, and the cross carries its name. It sits in the G Center and its hexagram is Modesty. With Gate 5 in the Sacral it would form Channel 5-15, Rhythm, a Collective circuit Channel. Its fourth line, The Wallflower, is fixed in this cross, so the wide range of the Gate is lived from the edge of the room more than from the center of it. You watch the extremes before you join them, and you may never need to join the furthest ones.

Gate 10: The Behavior of the Self

Gate 10, The Behavior of the Self, is the conscious Earth and the other G Center Gate. Its hexagram is Treading. No other Gate here has as many options: it can pair for Channel 10-20 into the Throat, 10-34 into the Sacral or 10-57 into the Spleen, and all three belong to the Individual circuit. Its fourth line, The Opportunist, is fixed here, so how you carry yourself includes a sharp eye for when a door is open. Which of its Channels forms depends on your chart.

Gate 17: Opinions

Gate 17, Opinions, is the Design Sun, lived without thinking. It sits in the Ajna and its hexagram is Following. It completes Channel 17-62 with Gate 62 in the Throat, the Channel of Acceptance, in the Collective circuit. Its first line, Openness, is the line every Extremes chart carries, so the opinions form from a willingness to be shown something different. Others often meet that openness in you before you notice it yourself.

Gate 18: Correction

Gate 18, Correction, is the Design Earth. It sits in the Spleen and its hexagram is Work on What Has Been Spoilt. It completes Channel 18-58 with Gate 58 in the Root, the Channel of Judgment, in the Collective circuit. It grounds the cross in noticing what is out of order and wanting to fix it. Its first line, Conservatism, is fixed in this cross, so the correction leans toward keeping what works rather than tearing it down. That sits in creative tension with the openness of Gate 17.

The conscious side lives entirely in the G Center

Gates 15 and 10 are the cross's conscious Sun and Earth, and both belong to the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Whatever else is going on in your chart, the part of Extremes you can watch directly is about who you are and how you carry yourself.

They do not form a Channel with each other, so the Center is not defined by them alone. Each reaches outward: Gate 15 toward the Sacral, and Gate 10 toward the Throat, the Sacral or the Spleen. The cross gives you a strong sense of self and leaves open which way it connects.

An opinion and a correction beneath awareness

Gate 17 is in the Ajna, the Center of concepts, opinions and certainty. Gate 18 is in the Spleen, the Center of instinct, which works in the present tense. Both are awareness Centers, and in this cross both sit on the Design side, so they work without being watched.

Their fixed lines pull in different directions. Gate 17's first line is Openness and Gate 18's is Conservatism. One Gate is willing to hear anything, the other wants to protect what has already proven itself. Between them they give the cross a view that is both flexible and grounded.

A cross that leans toward the Collective circuit

Three of the four Gates, 15, 17 and 18, complete Channels in the Collective circuit: 5-15, 17-62 and 18-58. Only Gate 10 turns toward the Individual circuit. The cross is mostly about patterns that can be shared and checked, with one Gate pointed back at the self.

None of the four Gates sits in a motor Center. The cross sees the range, forms the opinion and spots the correction, and the energy to carry any of it out comes from the rest of the chart.

Why the Extremes is a Juxtaposition cross

Extremes cannot move to a different seat. The wide view stays the Sun for life, and the Design Gates keep forming their opinions and corrections in the background. A fixed fate suits this cross: the range is not a phase to settle down from but the material your judgment is made of. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Extremes cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Extremes cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 15.4 The WallflowerYou take in extremes from the edge of the room, watching how far people go before you decide how far you will.
Personality Earth: Gate 10.4 The OpportunistYou have an eye for openings and move on them when the moment is right, without making a show of the timing.
Design Sun: Gate 17.1 OpennessBelow awareness your opinions stay open to change, and people often find you easy to talk to for that reason.
Design Earth: Gate 18.1 ConservatismYour urge to fix what is broken is cautious, and you reach first for what has already worked.

Living the Extremes cross

At work

People with Extremes make good editors, reviewers, consultants and teachers, work that rewards a wide view and a willingness to say what should change. The range is the asset: you can speak with credibility to people at both ends of an issue. The risk is staying in the observer's seat, so take on at least one role where you have to commit to a position.

In relationships

Partners may see you as hard to pin down: open to anything, then suddenly firm about one thing. Say which mode you are in. When you are exploring, tell them you are only exploring; when a correction matters, tell them it matters. The range is easier to live with when people know which end of the dial you are at.

In decisions

Seeing every side is not deciding. The Ajna and the Spleen can weigh a situation without telling you what is right for you.

Decide through your Type and your inner Authority, and bring the cross in afterward to test the decision against the whole range. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Extremes cross is misread

"Extremes means I am an extreme person"

The cross carries the name of its Personality Sun, Gate 15, which is about the full range of human behavior, high and low. It describes the span you can understand, not a tendency to go overboard. Its fixed fourth line is The Wallflower.

"The Wallflower means I should stay in the background"

The line shapes how you take in the range, from the edge. It does not stop the Design Gates from forming opinions and corrections that reach other people, such as Channels 17-62 and 18-58.

"It is the Left Angle Cross of Prevention"

Prevention holds the same four Gates but belongs to the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 Profiles and works its purpose out through other people. Extremes is the 4/1 arrangement, and it fixes all four lines.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 15: Where have you gone further than most people, and what did it teach you about the middle?
  2. Gate 10: What opening are you watching for right now, and what will tell you it is time?
  3. Gate 17: Which opinion have you not updated in years, and would you let someone change it?
  4. Gate 18: What are you trying to fix that might already be working?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

Which Channels your Gates actually complete is the part this page cannot tell you. A Human Design reading is built from your own chart, so it shows whether Gate 5, 20, 34, 57, 62 or 58 is present for you and how that shapes your Type and Authority.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 15, 10, 17 and 18, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of range and refinement, with opinions and corrections working beneath awareness.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Extremes?

The 4/1 Profile fixes them: 15.4 The Wallflower as the Personality Sun, 10.4 The Opportunist as the Personality Earth, 17.1 Openness as the Design Sun, and 18.1 Conservatism as the Design Earth. Every chart with this cross carries all four.

Does Extremes have a motor Center?

Not among its own Gates, which sit in the G Center, the Ajna and the Spleen. The drive comes from the rest of your chart. Gate 10 can reach the Sacral through Channel 10-34, and Gate 18 can reach the Root through Channel 18-58.

How are Gates 15 and 10 related?

They are the Personality Sun and Earth, so they are opposite Gates, and both sit in the G Center. They do not form a Channel with each other; each reaches out through its own partners.

What do Gates 17 and 18 add to the cross?

Gate 17, Opinions, sits in the Ajna and can complete Channel 17-62 with the Throat. Gate 18, Correction, sits in the Spleen and can complete Channel 18-58 with the Root. Together they supply the views and the fixes.

Which circuits do the Channels of Extremes belong to?

Three Gates complete Collective Channels: 5-15, 17-62 and 18-58. Gate 10 completes Individual Channels, which are 10-20, 10-34 and 10-57.
