Simple way to think about it: Migration is a flock that has to decide when to leave. Some birds are ready early and some wait for the weather to turn, and each one needs to be close enough to the others to go together and free enough to know when it is time itself.

Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Migration cross on the BodyGraph

The four Gates sit in four different Centers: the Heart and the Solar Plexus in the middle of the chart, the Sacral below and the Throat at the top. The conscious pair, Gates 37 and 40, is also a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Planning, and the Design pair, Gates 5 and 35, is a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness.

With Friendship as your conscious Sun, the cross sits in the Initiation quarter, a purpose fulfilled through Mind: you start from belonging, and Aloneness, your conscious Earth, is the room you need to stay yourself inside it. On the Design side, Fixed Rhythms and Change work below awareness, so your timing and your appetite for movement are noticed by others first.

With Aloneness as your conscious Sun, the cross sits in the Duality quarter, a purpose fulfilled through Bonding: you start from standing apart, and Friendship, the conscious Earth, is what draws you back toward people. Change is now the Design Sun and Fixed Rhythms the Design Earth, so your readiness to move comes first and your sense of timing follows.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 37: Friendship

Gate 37, Friendship, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves. Its hexagram is The Family, and its lines run from The Mother/Father through Evenhandedness and Love to Purpose. It completes Channel 37-40 with Gate 40, and here that Channel is fully inside the cross. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of how a community holds together. As an Earth it grounds another theme in the people you count as your own.

Gate 40: Aloneness

Gate 40, Aloneness, sits in the Heart, the Center of willpower and worth. Its hexagram is Deliverance. It completes Channel 37-40 with Gate 37 in the Solar Plexus, named Community and keynoted as a design of being a part seeking a whole, in the Tribal circuit. As a Sun it makes your purpose the question of when to give and when to rest. As an Earth it keeps another theme from spending itself. Its lines run from Recuperation to Decapitation, through Humility and Rigidity.

Gate 5: Fixed Rhythms

Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, sits in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Its hexagram is Waiting. It completes Channel 5-15 with Gate 15 in the G Center, named Rhythm and keynoted as a design of being in the flow, in the Collective circuit. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so your timing runs underneath. Its lines run from Perseverance and Inner peace through Compulsiveness to The Hunter, Joy and Yielding.

Gate 35: Change

Gate 35, Change, is a Throat Gate, so it is a voice. Its hexagram is Progress. It completes Channel 35-36 with Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, named Transitoriness and keynoted as a design of a jack of all trades. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so a restless wish to try the new may be seen in you before you notice it. Its lines run from Humility to Rectification, through Creative block, Hunger and Altruism.

Channel 37-40 comes with the cross

Gates 37 and 40 are both in this cross, and together they form Channel 37-40. Every rotation carries all four Gates, so everyone with this cross has the Channel defined. In rotation 1 Friendship is the Personality Sun and Aloneness the Personality Earth. In rotation 2 they swap. The Channel is keynoted as a design of being a part seeking a whole, and it belongs to the Tribal circuit.

It joins the Heart to the Solar Plexus, two motors, and it is a Projected Channel: no Sacral, and no motor linked straight to the Throat. It also means the Heart and the Solar Plexus are defined for everyone with Migration, and no one with it is a Reflector. The theme of belonging and standing apart is not something you pick up along the way. It is built in.

Emotional Authority is built in

Channel 37-40 defines the Solar Plexus, and a defined Solar Plexus is the first Authority in the order, so everyone with this cross has Emotional Authority. The canon says it decides over time, across the emotional wave, with no truth in the now. Gate 37 is on the Tribal wave, which builds a step at a time until it releases.

That makes a quiet fit with a Left Angle cross. A life worked out through others will keep putting you in front of invitations, requests and offers. This cross asks you to let the wave pass before you answer. Your Type is still open, so your Strategy comes from the rest of the chart, and the Authority is the part Migration fixes.

Waiting and Progress on the Design side

The Design pair puts two opposites together. Gate 5 has the hexagram Waiting and sits in the Sacral. Gate 35 has the hexagram Progress and sits in the Throat. One is about holding to a rhythm and the other about moving on. The same person carries both, and neither is a choice.

Gate 35 also completes a manifesting Channel, 35-36, with Gate 36: a Channel that joins a motor, the Solar Plexus, straight to the Throat. The Solar Plexus is already defined here, so if Gate 36 comes from your chart or from another person, the wave has a direct line to the Throat. Others who bring Gate 36 or Gate 15 can complete what Gate 35 and Gate 5 only begin.

Why the Migration is a Left Angle cross

Migration is a Left Angle cross, so its purpose plays out in company and not around a private goal. In Migration that is plain from the first pair: Friendship and Aloneness are only questions when there are others to be close to or apart from. Your life tends to move with the people you meet and the communities you join or leave. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 37.5 means Gate 37, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Migration cross.

Migration 1: Personality Sun in Gate 37, Friendship
37.1 The Mother/FatherYou carry your family's way of caring, and you decide which parts of it to hand on.
37.2 ResponsibilityYou take on the duties that fall to you, and the cross asks you to choose them on purpose.
37.3 EvenhandednessYou treat the people around you fairly, and a community learns what to expect from you.
37.4 Leadership by exampleYou lead a group by how you behave in it, and others copy what they see you do.
37.5 LoveLove is the tie that holds your group together, and you learn what it takes to keep it.
37.6 PurposeYou look back on the community you helped build and see what it was for.
Migration 2: Personality Sun in Gate 40, Aloneness
40.1 RecuperationYou rest when you are spent, and that rest is what makes your next effort possible.
40.2 ResolutenessYou make a clear decision to stop or to go on, and you stay with it.
40.3 HumilityYou admit when you have given more than you can, and others learn from the admission.
40.4 OrganizationYou organize the work so that it gets done without wearing you out.
40.5 RigidityYou can dig in and refuse to bend, and the cross asks you to notice when that costs you.
40.6 DecapitationYou cut away what no longer serves you, even when it is hard to let go.

Living the Migration cross

At work

At work, Migration people tend to hold a team together without being appointed to do it, and then need real time away from it. You do best where giving effort and resting are both understood, and where nobody expects an answer on the spot. When a request comes in, let it sit overnight. The Authority built into your cross works over time, and the decision you make after the wave settles is usually the one you keep.

In relationships

Friendship and Aloneness sit side by side in your closest relationships. You may feel strongly drawn toward people one week and want to be by yourself the next, and both are the cross, not a problem in the relationship. Tell the people close to you that you need both. The ones who stay are the ones who understand you can leave a room without leaving them.

In decisions

Migration fixes your Authority: everyone with it decides by Emotional Authority, over time and not in the moment. That is a plain advantage for a cross about moving on. A strong yes or no in the heat of a feeling is part of the wave, not the answer. Give it a day, or a few, and see what is still true when the wave has settled.

Answer through your Emotional Authority and your Type's Strategy, and let the timing of your moves come from the wave, not from pressure. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Migration cross is misread

"Migration means I should move away or change my life"

The name points to a pattern of belonging, standing apart and moving on, but nothing in the four Gates tells you to relocate. Change and Fixed Rhythms describe timing, and you set it through your Authority.

"Aloneness means I should be alone"

Gate 40 is half of Channel 37-40, which is named for being a part seeking a whole. Aloneness here is the rest that keeps your giving honest, and it exists in relation to the people in Gate 37.

"Because I have Channel 37-40, my Type is fixed"

The Channel fixes your Authority and rules out Reflector, but it is motor to motor, with no Sacral and no link to the Throat. Your Type depends on the rest of your chart.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 37: Which community or group do you count as your own, and what do you give to it?
  2. Gate 40: When did you last rest before you were empty, and what made it possible?
  3. Gate 5: What are you waiting on right now, and is the wait asking you for patience or for action?
  4. Gate 35: What new thing are you tempted to try, and what in your life needs to stay still while you do?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Migration rotation you carry, your Sun line, and whether Gate 15 or Gate 36 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Migration

What is the Left Angle Cross of Migration?

It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 37, 40, 5 and 35. Its theme is belonging, standing apart, timing and change, worked out through other people.

Which Migration rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 37/40 | 5/35 is Migration 1, with Friendship as your Personality Sun. 40/37 | 35/5 is Migration 2, with Aloneness as your Personality Sun.

Does everyone with the Cross of Migration have Emotional Authority?

Yes. The cross holds both Gates of Channel 37-40, so the Channel is always defined, and it defines the Solar Plexus. A defined Solar Plexus gives Emotional Authority, which sits first in the order of Authorities.

Can someone with the Cross of Migration be a Reflector?

No. A Reflector has no defined Centers, and this cross always defines Channel 37-40, which makes the Heart and the Solar Plexus defined. Every other Type is still possible.

Why are Friendship and Aloneness side by side in Migration?

Gates 37 and 40 are opposites on the wheel and together make Channel 37-40, Community, so everyone with this cross has it. Friendship is the Solar Plexus half, with the hexagram The Family, and Aloneness is the Heart half, with the hexagram Deliverance. Migration keeps belonging and standing apart in one Channel.

Which Gate in Migration sits in the Throat?

Gate 35, Change. The other three sit in the Solar Plexus, the Heart and the Sacral, all of them motors. The Solar Plexus is also the cross's one awareness Center.
