Juxtaposition Cross of Denial
The Juxtaposition Cross of Denial is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 40, 37, 35 and 5, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path about belonging: the will to deliver for a community, the bonds that hold it, and the patience to wait for the right moment.
Simple way to think about it: Denial is the host who sets the table, waits until every dish is ready and every guest has arrived, and only then sits down. The giving is real, and the table is never rushed to fill.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Denial. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (40/37 | 35/5). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Denial cross on the BodyGraph
Four Centers hold the four Gates. Gate 40 is in the Heart, Gate 37 in the Solar Plexus, Gate 35 in the Throat and Gate 5 in the Sacral. Three of them are motors. The conscious pair, 40 and 37, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Planning; the Design pair, 35 and 5, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness.

How the Denial cross is placed
The Denial (40/37 | 35/5)
Aloneness is your conscious Sun and Friendship your conscious Earth, so the Channel they form is something you live with directly: the pull between standing apart and belonging. Change and Fixed Rhythms sit on the Design side. The urge to move on and the body's own timing work underneath, and others may see your pacing before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 40: Aloneness
Gate 40, Aloneness, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Heart, the smallest motor and the Center of willpower and worth. Its hexagram is Deliverance. It completes Channel 37-40, the Channel of Community, with Gate 37 in the Solar Plexus, a Tribal Channel in the Ego group. As a Sun it is the will to deliver on a promise to others. Its fourth line, Organization, is the one every Denial chart carries here: the will works best when it is given something to organize.
Gate 37: Friendship
Gate 37, Friendship, is the conscious Earth and sits in the Solar Plexus. Its hexagram is The Family. It is the other half of Channel 37-40, which makes it the cross's emotional ground. Gate 37 is one of the Gates the canon places in the Tribal emotional wave, which builds step by step until it releases. Its fourth line, Leadership by example, is fixed in this cross: the bonds it forms are held together by doing what you ask of others, not by asking.
Gate 35: Change
Gate 35, Change, is the Design Sun and the cross's only Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Progress. It completes Channel 35-36, the Channel of Transitoriness, with Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus. That Channel joins the Solar Plexus to the Throat, so it is a manifesting Channel. Lived without thinking, this is a restless hunger for new experience. The first line, Humility, is fixed here, which gives the restlessness a modest starting point: willingness to start as a beginner.
Gate 5: Fixed Rhythms
Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, is the Design Earth and the cross's only Sacral Gate. Its hexagram is Waiting. It completes Channel 5-15, the Channel of Rhythm, with Gate 15 in the G Center, a Collective Channel in the Understanding stream. It grounds the cross in the body's own timing, and in a patience that is not passive. Its first line, Perseverance, is the one every chart with this cross carries: you keep your rhythm over a long run, even when nothing visible is happening.
A Channel that settles the Authority
Gates 37 and 40 are both in this cross and form Channel 37-40. Because every chart with Denial carries all four Gates, everyone with it has that Channel defined. It joins the Solar Plexus to the Heart, so the Solar Plexus is defined in every chart with this cross.
The canon rule is that a defined Solar Plexus puts Emotional Authority at the top of the hierarchy. That means everyone with this cross has Emotional Authority: decisions are made over time, across the emotional wave, with no truth in the now. This is the clearest thing the cross fixes.
Three motors and one voice
The Heart, the Solar Plexus and the Sacral are all motors, and the cross holds one Gate in each. The fourth Gate, 35, is in the Throat. So the cross is a lot of drive with one place to speak from. Gate 35 can complete Channel 35-36 with Gate 36, a motor-to-Throat link, if it is in your chart.
The motors do not all point the same way. Will, emotion and life force have their own timing, which is why the cross rewards waiting. When they agree, the energy is strong. When they do not, the Authority has to sort it out.
Why waiting is part of the design
Gate 5 is called Fixed Rhythms and its hexagram is Waiting. Together with Emotional Authority, which decides over time, it makes patience a structural feature of the cross rather than a virtue to practice.
That does not mean doing nothing. Perseverance is the fixed first line of Gate 5, and Organization the fixed fourth line of Gate 40. Wait, and keep going: those two lines describe the same movement from different sides. The cross asks you to stay in motion without forcing the decision.
Why the Denial is a Juxtaposition cross
Denial does not vary. The pull between standing alone and belonging to others, and the habit of waiting before deciding, are carried exactly as they are by everyone with this cross. Being a Juxtaposition cross means that tension is not a stage to pass through. The work is learning to hold it without forcing it shut. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Denial cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Denial cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 40.4 Organization | Your will works best when it has something to organize, whether a team, a household or a project with a clear shape. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 37.4 Leadership by example | The bonds you form are held together by doing what you would ask of others, not by asking. |
| Design Sun: Gate 35.1 Humility | Below awareness your restlessness starts modestly, willing to begin as a beginner in each new place. |
| Design Earth: Gate 5.1 Perseverance | You keep your own rhythm over the long run, even through stretches where nothing visible is happening. |
Living the Denial cross
At work
People with Denial often do well where will and loyalty are both needed: leading a team by example, running something for a community, or holding a role for years. The Heart Gate gives follow-through and the Throat Gate gives a restless interest in the new. The strain comes when the will is asked to commit before the emotions have settled. Give yourself time on big agreements, and say so plainly to the people waiting on you.
In relationships
Close up, the cross can look like someone who gives a great deal and also needs space. Both are real. Because Emotional Authority runs on a wave, how you feel on Monday may not be how you feel on Friday, and the people near you do better when they know that. The wave is not a mood problem. It is the time your Authority needs.
In decisions
Everyone with Denial has Emotional Authority, so the answer is not found in the moment. Let a choice sit through a high and a low before committing, and notice what stays true. The cross gives the will to follow through, and your Strategy still comes first.
Make choices with your Type's Strategy and your Emotional Authority, then let the cross supply the staying power. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Denial cross is misread
"Denial means I deny my feelings"
"Aloneness means I should stay alone"
"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Migration"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 40: What are you willing to organize for other people, and what would you want in return?
- Gate 37: Who do you show up for by example, without ever having to ask?
- Gate 35: What new thing are you willing to start badly in order to learn?
- Gate 5: Where in your life is waiting the right call, and where is it only delay?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Denial
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Denial?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 40, 37, 35 and 5, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path about belonging: will given to a community, bonds held by example, and patience about timing.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Denial?
They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 40.4 Organization as the Personality Sun, 37.4 Leadership by example as the Personality Earth, 35.1 Humility as the Design Sun and 5.1 Perseverance as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.
Does everyone with Denial have Emotional Authority?
Yes. Gates 37 and 40 form Channel 37-40, which defines the Solar Plexus. By the canon rule, a defined Solar Plexus puts Emotional Authority at the top of the hierarchy, so the decision is made over time across the emotional wave.
What does Channel 37-40 add to this cross?
It is the Channel of Community, joining the Solar Plexus to the Heart, in the Tribal circuit's Ego group. Both of its Gates are in this cross, so it is defined for everyone who carries Denial, and it is the cross's strongest fixed feature.
Can Denial make me a Manifestor?
Not by itself. Gate 35 can complete Channel 35-36, which links a motor to the Throat, but only if Gate 36 is also active in your chart. The cross brings the Throat Gate and leaves the rest to your own placements.
Why does Denial have three motor Centers?
Its Gates sit in the Heart, the Solar Plexus and the Sacral, which are all motors, plus the Throat. That gives the cross energy from will, emotion and life force at once, and it is why timing matters so much here.
