Right Angle Cross of Planning
The Right Angle Cross of Planning is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 37, 40, 9 and 16: Friendship, Aloneness, Focus and Skills. Its theme is building a dependable circle through steady attention and practiced skill, lived through your own experience. Everyone with this cross has Emotional Authority.
Simple way to think about it: Planning is the schedule taped to the family refrigerator. It is not exciting, but it is the reason dinner happens, the bills get paid and everyone knows who is picking up whom. Underneath it sits a person who cares whether the household works.

Look for the line that reads Right Angle Cross of Planning. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (37/40 | 9/16). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the four you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Planning cross on the BodyGraph
Two of the four Planning Gates already make a Channel on their own. Gates 37 and 40 sit at opposite ends of Channel 37-40, so every rotation of this cross has it defined. The other two Gates, 9 and 16, reach out to the Root and the Spleen, and each needs a partner from somewhere else in your chart.

The four rotations of the Planning cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 to 4.
The Planning 1 (37/40 | 9/16)
With Friendship as your conscious Sun, the cross starts with belonging. You care who is in the circle and how they are treated, and Aloneness as your Earth shows how much you need your own space too. The Design side runs Focus and Skills, so a knack for steady, practiced work shows up in you without much effort.
The Planning 2 (16/9 | 37/40)
Here Skills is the conscious theme: you want to be good at something, and Focus as your Earth gives that wish patience. Friendship and Aloneness run on the Design side, which means Channel 37-40 works below your awareness, and others may see your loyalty before you do.
The Planning 3 (40/37 | 16/9)
With Aloneness as your conscious Sun, the cross is about what you give to the group and what you keep for yourself. Friendship as your Earth grounds that in family and home. Skills and Focus run underneath, a quiet capacity to get good at things when you stay with them.
The Planning 4 (9/16 | 40/37)
Focus leads in this version. You know how to narrow your attention to one thing and stay there, and Skills as your Earth adds practice to it. Aloneness and Friendship sit on the Design side, so the pull toward community runs as a background current.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 37: Friendship
Gate 37, Friendship, sits in the Solar Plexus and its hexagram is The Family. It is the Gate of the bonds that hold a group together: promises kept, favors returned, a household that runs on trust. As a Sun, your purpose is tied to building and keeping that kind of circle. As an Earth, it keeps another theme grounded in the people it affects. Its Channel is Community, 37-40, which runs to Gate 40, Aloneness, in the Heart. Both ends of that Channel are inside this cross, so it is the one Channel you can count on having.
Gate 40: Aloneness
Gate 40, Aloneness, sits in the Heart and its hexagram is Deliverance. It is the will to work hard and then pull back to recover, and the honest need for time apart from the people you serve. As a Sun, your purpose carries a rhythm of giving and withdrawing. As an Earth, it gives another theme a need for rest. Its Channel is Community, 37-40, which runs to Gate 37, Friendship, in the Solar Plexus. Willpower and feeling meet there, and the cross is a long study of the two.
Gate 9: Focus
Gate 9, Focus, sits in the Sacral and its hexagram is The Taming Power of the Small. It is the ability to pay close attention to small things until they add up to something. As a Sun, your purpose is built on detail and staying power. As an Earth, it steadies another theme with patience. Its Channel is Concentration, 9-52, which runs from the Sacral to Gate 52, Stillness, in the Root. Concentration is a format energy Channel: it sets the pace and structure for the Collective circuit around it, and it needs a partner from outside this cross.
Gate 16: Skills
Gate 16, Skills, sits in the Throat and its hexagram is Enthusiasm. It is the drive to practice something until you can do it well, and to show what you can do. As a Sun, your purpose is built on repetition that becomes skill. As an Earth, it adds practice to another theme. Its Channel is The Wavelength, 16-48, which runs to Gate 48, Depth, in the Spleen. Skill and depth belong together there, so an enthusiasm for something has to be tested against how deeply you know it.
A Channel everyone with Planning has: 37-40
Most crosses leave it up to the rest of your chart whether a Channel gets built. Planning does not. Gates 37 and 40 sit in every rotation, and together they form Channel 37-40, called Community. That means Channel 37-40 is defined in everyone with this cross, with no exceptions.
Which planets make it depends on your rotation. In rotations 1 and 3, both Gates sit on the Personality side, so the Channel is conscious. In rotations 2 and 4, both sit on the Design side, so it runs unconsciously. Either way, the Heart and the Solar Plexus are linked in you, the willpower Center and the emotional Center, and the canon describes the Channel as a design of being a part seeking a whole.
Everyone with Planning has Emotional Authority
Channel 37-40 defines the Solar Plexus, and a defined Solar Plexus outranks every other Authority. So every person with the Right Angle Cross of Planning decides by Emotional Authority: over time, across the emotional wave, with no clear truth in the moment. The cross itself settles this part of your design.
In practice it means waiting. A yes that feels certain at the high point of a wave may look different at the low point. The canon places Gate 37 in the Tribal wave, which builds a step at a time until it releases. Give a choice a day or two, let the feeling rise and fall, and decide when it has settled. Type still varies: Generators, Manifesting Generators and Projectors all occur with this cross, so how you start things depends on your Type.
Four Gates in four Centers, three of them motors
Planning spreads its Gates widely: the Heart, the Sacral, the Solar Plexus and the Throat, one each. Three of those are motors. The Heart brings willpower, the Sacral brings life force, and the Solar Plexus is both a motor and an awareness Center. Only the Throat is not a motor.
That gives the cross plenty of energy and a place to say what it means. Gate 16, Skills, sits right in the Throat, so part of this cross is already at the point of expression. It also means Planning can be tired by its own range. Gate 40, Aloneness, is the part of you that knows when to stop. The two outer Channels are for partners: Gate 9 needs Gate 52 for Concentration, and Gate 16 needs Gate 48 for The Wavelength.
Why the Planning is a Right Angle cross
A Right Angle cross is a personal destiny: the purpose works out through your own experience, and other people are not the point of it. For Planning that matters, because a cross about community and friendship can look as if it exists to serve the group. It does not. You learn how to belong, to rest and to practice for yourself first, and the group benefits from someone who has. The Right Angle goes with seven Profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6. If your Profile is one of these, your cross is a Right Angle cross.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.4 means Gate 13, Line 4. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Planning cross.

| 9.6 Gratitude | You finish in gratitude, and thanks for what small steps built is part of your focus. |
Living the Planning cross
At work
Planning people are often the ones who keep a team or a household running: scheduling, organizing, following through. Work goes best when there is a defined group to serve, a craft to improve and time to recover between pushes. Roles in teaching, operations, coaching, trades, administration or care tend to fit. Because your Authority is emotional, avoid saying yes to a new commitment in the middle of a wave. Take a day, then answer.
In relationships
In close relationships you are the one who remembers birthdays, keeps the routine and shows love through consistency. That is a gift, and it can turn into resentment if no one notices. Say what you need before the feeling builds. Plan time alone as part of the relationship, not as a threat to it. Partners usually understand once they see that stepping back is how you refill, and not a sign you care less.
In decisions
Planning does not tell you what to decide, only how. Everyone with it has Emotional Authority, so no big choice is best made in the moment. Wait through a wave, notice how the choice feels at the high and the low, and choose when the feeling has settled.
Use your Type and your Emotional Authority for each choice, and let Planning show you whether, looking back, the commitments you made fit the people you wanted to build for. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Planning cross is misread
"Planning means I have to be organized"
"Emotional Authority means I am too emotional to decide"
"My Type is decided by this cross"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 37: Who is in your circle right now, and who have you been meaning to show up for?
- Gate 40: When did you last step back to recover before you hit empty?
- Gate 9: What small thing, done with care every day, would change a larger thing in a year?
- Gate 16: What are you practicing, and who gives you honest feedback on it?

FAQ: Right Angle Cross of Planning
What is the Right Angle Cross of Planning?
It is one of the 16 Right Angle Incarnation Crosses in Human Design, made of Gates 37, 40, 9 and 16. Its theme is building a dependable circle through attention and practiced skill, lived through your own experience, with Emotional Authority for everyone who has it.
Which Planning rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 37/40 | 9/16 is Planning 1, 16/9 | 37/40 is Planning 2, 40/37 | 16/9 is Planning 3, and 9/16 | 40/37 is Planning 4. The first number is your Personality Sun.
Does everyone with the Cross of Planning have Emotional Authority?
Yes. Every rotation carries both Gate 37 and Gate 40, which together form Channel 37-40 and define the Solar Plexus. A defined Solar Plexus outranks every other Authority, so the cross itself settles it.
Does the Cross of Planning decide my Type?
No. Channel 37-40 joins the Heart to the Solar Plexus, and neither touches the Throat through it, so it does not fix a Type. Generators, Manifesting Generators and Projectors can all carry this cross.
What does Channel 37-40 do for this cross?
It is called Community, and it joins the Solar Plexus to the Heart. Because both Gates sit in the cross, it is always defined. It ties together belonging, willpower and feeling, and it is why the cross is so much about the circle around you.
Which other crosses connect to Planning?
Gate 9 completes a Channel with Gate 52 in the Cross of Service, and Gate 16 completes one with Gate 48 in the Cross of Tension. Someone with those Gates in their chart can complete a Planning Channel.
