Right Angle Cross of Consciousness
The Right Angle Cross of Consciousness is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 63, 64, 5 and 35. Two Gates sit in the Head, one in the Sacral and one in the Throat. It is about questions, timing and change, worked out through your own experience, one open question after another.
Simple way to think about it: Picture a lighthouse keeper who is also the weather forecaster. Part of the job is watching the horizon and asking what is coming. Part is keeping a steady schedule so the light turns on time. And part is knowing when the sea is about to change. Consciousness holds all three jobs in one person.

The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (63/64 | 5/35). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the four you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Consciousness cross on the BodyGraph
Consciousness is lopsided in an interesting way. Half of its Gates, 63 and 64, sit side by side in the Head, the top Center of the chart. The other two split the rest: Gate 5 in the Sacral and Gate 35 in the Throat. So the cross has a thinking end, a working end and a speaking end, with the biggest weight at the top.

The four rotations of the Consciousness cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 to 4.
The Consciousness 1 (63/64 | 5/35)
With Doubt as the conscious Sun, you work by questioning what looks finished. Gate 64, Confusion, is your conscious Earth, so open questions are always close by. Fixed Rhythms and Change run on the Design side, which means a steady pace and a readiness for change develop underneath, often noticed by others first.
The Consciousness 2 (35/5 | 63/64)
Change leads here. You are aware of the pull toward the next thing, and Fixed Rhythms, as the conscious Earth, gives that pull a regular beat. Doubt and Confusion work on the Design side, so the habit of questioning everything may feel like background noise rather than something you chose.
The Consciousness 3 (64/63 | 35/5)
With Confusion as your conscious Sun, you live in the middle of unfinished pictures. Doubt is the conscious Earth, so you tend to check each new idea against what has already been tried. Change and Fixed Rhythms sit on the Design side, shaping your sense of when it is time to move on without much thought.
The Consciousness 4 (5/35 | 64/63)
Fixed Rhythms leads in this version. You know the value of waiting, of keeping a pace and letting things arrive on their own schedule. Change is your conscious Earth, which adds a willingness to shift when the moment comes. Confusion and Doubt hum underneath as questions you rarely announce.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 63: Doubt
Gate 63, Doubt, sits in the Head and is the pressure to check whether something is really true. Its hexagram is After Completion, which hints at the state it works in: a thing seems done, and the mind asks whether it holds. As a Sun, your purpose runs on questioning what others take for finished. As an Earth, it adds a careful eye to your other themes. Its Channel, Logic, runs to Gate 4 in the Ajna, where doubt is turned into a pattern that can be tested and explained.
Gate 64: Confusion
Gate 64, Confusion, is the other Head Gate of this cross. Its hexagram is Before Completion, the mental state of a picture that is not yet whole. This is not failure; it is the raw material of ideas. As a Sun, you spend much of life holding things that have not yet come together. As an Earth, it keeps another theme open to new input. Its Channel, Abstraction, runs to Gate 47 in the Ajna, where scattered images can finally become a realization. Its lines run from Conditions to Victory, a path from needing the right setting to seeing the picture whole.
Gate 5: Fixed Rhythms
Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, sits in the Sacral and is the Gate of waiting and regular patterns. Its lines run from Perseverance to Yielding, so it has more to do with patience and daily habit than with speed. As a Sun, your purpose runs on steady rhythms that you keep and share. As an Earth, it lends a pace to your thinking and speaking. Its Channel, Rhythm, runs to Gate 15 in the G Center, where a daily rhythm becomes part of your identity. Because it is a Sacral Gate, the rhythm is something you feel in the body, in when you want to work and when you want to stop.
Gate 35: Change
Gate 35, Change, sits in the Throat and is the Gate of progress through experience. Its lines run from Humility to Rectification, and one of them, Hunger, is about the drive to try something new. As a Sun, you are here to move through many experiences and bring something back. As an Earth, it sets a gentle pressure on your other themes to keep growing. Its Channel, Transitoriness, runs to Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus. There the pull to change meets feeling, so change in your life tends to arrive with emotion attached, and it is worth noticing which changes you want and which you are only reacting to.
Two Gates in the Head: Doubt and Confusion side by side
The Head is a pressure Center. It pushes you to think, to wonder and to question, without any way to settle the questions it raises. Consciousness is the only Right Angle cross with two Gates there, and they are opposites: Gate 63 is Doubt, and Gate 64 is Confusion.
That pairing sets the tone. Doubt asks whether something finished is really true. Confusion sits inside the not-yet-finished. Together they make a mind that checks and also wonders. The cross is not built to arrive at tidy answers. Its gift is the ability to hold an open question long enough for something real to form, and to keep asking after everyone else has stopped.
Every Channel here belongs to the Collective circuit
Many crosses mix circuits. Consciousness does not. All four of the Channels its Gates complete, Logic, Abstraction, Rhythm and Transitoriness, belong to the Collective circuit. Logic and Rhythm are in the Understanding group, which looks for patterns that can be shared. Abstraction and Transitoriness are in the Sensing group, which learns from experience.
So this cross is oriented toward the group. It asks questions, keeps rhythms and goes through changes in ways that others can learn from. It is still a Right Angle cross, so the experience is yours. But what you learn tends to travel, which is why people with this cross are often asked how they worked something out.
A manifesting Channel, a rhythm and a long road to the Throat
Gate 35 is in the Throat, and one of its Channels, Transitoriness (35-36), links the Throat to the Solar Plexus. That is a manifesting Channel: it joins a motor to the Throat, which gives it a direct route from feeling into expression and action.
The two Head Gates have a longer road. Their Channels run down to the Ajna, not to the Throat, so Doubt and Confusion need other Centers and Channels in your chart to reach your voice. Gate 5, in the Sacral, adds a motor. Put together, the cross has a lot to say but needs patience in getting it said, which is exactly the lesson Fixed Rhythms teaches.
Why the Consciousness is a Right Angle cross
A Right Angle cross is a personal destiny. The purpose is lived through your own experience, and other people are not the point of it. For Consciousness this matters, because a cross about questions can seem to exist to give others answers. It does not. You are here to follow your own doubts and changes first. What you learn helps others only as a side effect. The Right Angle goes with seven Profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6. If your Profile is one of these, your cross is a Right Angle cross.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.4 means Gate 13, Line 4. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Consciousness cross.
Consciousness 1: Personality Sun in Gate 63, Doubt
| 63.1 Composure | Composure lets you hold a doubt without being thrown by it, so your questions stay calm. |
|---|---|
| 63.2 Structuring | Structuring means you give your doubts a framework, and your questions come with a plan. |
| 63.3 Continuance | Continuance asks you to keep questioning past the point where others stop, until the answer holds. |
| 63.4 Memory | Memory ties your doubt to what already happened, so your questions are shaped by experience. |
| 63.5 Affirmation | Affirmation is the moment when a doubt is settled, and others look to you to confirm it. |
| 63.6 Nostalgia | Nostalgia colors your doubt with the past, and the cross asks you to question that longing as well. |
Consciousness 2: Personality Sun in Gate 35, Change
| 35.1 Humility | Humility lets you enter a new experience as a learner, and so you gain more from it. |
|---|---|
| 35.2 Creative block | A creative block is a pause in your drive to change, and the cross asks you to wait it out. |
| 35.3 Collaboration | Collaboration means change goes better with others, and you learn through shared experience. |
| 35.4 Hunger | Hunger is the drive to try the next thing, and the cross asks what you are really hungry for. |
| 35.5 Altruism | Altruism turns your experiences into something useful for others, a way of giving back. |
| 35.6 Rectification | Rectification is the point where you look back and fix what experience has shown to be wrong. |
Consciousness 3: Personality Sun in Gate 64, Confusion
| 64.1 Conditions | Conditions set the stage for a clearer picture, so you wait for the right circumstances to see. |
|---|---|
| 64.2 Qualification | Qualification means you check whether you have what is needed to move from confusion to clarity. |
| 64.3 Overextension | Overextension is the risk of stretching an unfinished idea too far before it is ready. |
| 64.4 Conviction | Conviction grows out of confusion, and you commit once the picture finally fits together. |
| 64.5 Promise | Promise is a vision that is not yet real, and others may expect you to deliver on it. |
| 64.6 Victory | Victory comes when the confusion resolves, and the cross asks you to enjoy it without rushing on. |
Consciousness 4: Personality Sun in Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms
| 5.1 Perseverance | Perseverance means your rhythm survives the days when nothing seems to be happening. |
|---|---|
| 5.2 Inner peace | Inner peace is the calm that comes from keeping a pace that suits you. |
| 5.3 Compulsiveness | Compulsiveness is the risk of holding a rhythm so tightly that it stops serving you. |
| 5.4 The Hunter | The Hunter waits and strikes at the right moment, so your timing is a skill, not luck. |
| 5.5 Joy | Joy comes from a rhythm that fits, and your ease with it draws others in. |
| 5.6 Yielding | Yielding means you let the rhythm change when it needs to, and so avoid being rigid. |
Living the Consciousness cross
At work
People with Consciousness often do well where questions are valued. Research, editing, analysis, quality checks and any job that rewards asking what everyone else skipped can fit. Work goes best when you can move at a steady pace, keep a routine and change direction when the evidence says so. Being rushed into an answer works against the whole cross. Give yourself time to see how a question develops before you commit.
In relationships
In close relationships the cross can look like a partner who keeps asking questions or is slow to say yes. Doubt and Confusion are not signs that you do not care. They are how this cross checks that something is real. Say so out loud. Tell the people close to you that you are thinking, not pulling away, and give them a sense of how long the process usually takes.
In decisions
A mind full of questions is not a decision-maker. Confusion and Doubt will happily go round in circles, and the pressure in the Head can feel urgent. That urgency is not an answer. Use your Strategy and Authority to decide, and let the cross tell you what kind of questions you keep coming back to.
Use your Type and inner Authority for each choice, and use Consciousness to see which questions and rhythms keep returning in your life. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Consciousness cross is misread
"Consciousness means I am more aware than other people"
"Doubt and Confusion mean something is wrong with my mind"
"I need to answer every question the cross raises"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 63: What have you been told is finished that you still quietly doubt, and why?
- Gate 64: Which unfinished picture are you carrying right now, and what would help it come together?
- Gate 5: What is the daily rhythm that keeps you steady, and which one are you forcing?
- Gate 35: What change are you hungry for, and what is the first small experience that would test it?

FAQ: Right Angle Cross of Consciousness
What is the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness?
It is one of the 16 Right Angle Incarnation Crosses in Human Design, made of Gates 63, 64, 5 and 35. Two of its Gates are in the Head, one in the Sacral and one in the Throat. Its theme is questioning, steady rhythm and change.
Which Consciousness rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 63/64 | 5/35 is Consciousness 1, 35/5 | 63/64 is Consciousness 2, 64/63 | 35/5 is Consciousness 3, and 5/35 | 64/63 is Consciousness 4. The first number is your Personality Sun.
Why are two Gates of Consciousness in the Head?
Gates 63 and 64 are opposites on the wheel and both belong to the Head. Together they give Consciousness two Head Gates that press for questions. Gates 5 and 35, the other opposite pair, bring in the Sacral and the Throat.
Why does Gate 5 list The Hunter and Joy as neighbors?
Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, sits in the Sacral. Its fourth line is The Hunter and its fifth is Joy, with Compulsiveness on line 3 just before. In Consciousness the Gate's steady rhythm runs from Perseverance on line 1 to Yielding on line 6, with pursuit and enjoyment in the middle.
Is there a manifesting Channel in Consciousness?
Yes, one. Transitoriness (35-36) joins the Solar Plexus, which is a motor, to the Throat. That gives Gate 35 a direct line from feeling to expression, if you have Gate 36 defined too. The other three Channels do not reach the Throat.
What do Nostalgia and Victory, the last lines of Doubt and Confusion, have in common?
Both are line 6 of a Head Gate. Gate 63, Doubt, ends on Nostalgia, a look back. Gate 64, Confusion, ends on Victory, a question settled. In Consciousness these are the two Head Gates, so the questioning that starts with Composure and Conditions ends in memory or in an answer.
