Left Angle Cross of Individualism

The Left Angle Cross of Individualism is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 39, 38, 51 and 57. It is about a strongly individual way of being that only takes shape in company: provocation and the will to fight on one side, shock and quiet instinct on the other.

Simple way to think about it: Picture a sparring partner who makes you better by pushing back. You do not become who you are in an empty gym. You find out by meeting someone who will not simply agree with you.

With Provocation as your conscious Sun, you are here to stir things up on purpose: to test people and ideas by pushing on them. The Fighter, the conscious Earth, gives that push a spine. On the Design side, Shock and Intuitive Clarity work underneath, so the jolt and the quiet knowing arrive before you have explained them.

Here The Fighter is the conscious theme: you feel the drive to stand up for what you hold and to find out what is worth fighting for. Provocation, the conscious Earth, makes that fight more pointed. Underneath, Intuitive Clarity and Shock change places on the Design side, so your instinct may speak first and the jolt follow.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 39: Provocation

Gate 39, Provocation, sits in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive. Its hexagram is Obstruction. It completes Channel 39-55, Emoting, with Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus, in the Individual circuit. As a Sun it makes your purpose the art of stirring people so they show who they are. As an Earth it adds a spark of challenge to whatever else you are doing. Its lines run from Disengagement and Confrontation to Temperance and The Troubleshooter.

Gate 38: The Fighter

Gate 38, The Fighter, is the other Root Gate. Its hexagram is Opposition. It completes Channel 28-38, Struggle, with Gate 28 in the Spleen. As a Sun it makes your purpose finding something worth the fight and then fighting for it properly. As an Earth it gives the rest of the cross some backbone. Its lines begin with Qualification and Politeness and end with Alienation and Misunderstanding, so even a good fight can leave you feeling on your own.

Gate 51: Shock

Gate 51, Shock, sits in the Heart, the smallest motor in the chart, the Center of willpower and worth. Its hexagram is The Arousing. It completes Channel 25-51, Initiation, with Gate 25 in the G Center. As a Design Sun it is a jolt others feel before you do. As an Earth it adds a courage that arrives suddenly. Its lines run from Reference and Withdrawal to Symmetry and Separation.

Gate 57: Intuitive Clarity

Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct, which speaks once and only in the present. Its hexagram is The Gentle. It has three partners: Gate 10 in the G Center, Gate 20 in the Throat and Gate 34 in the Sacral. As an Earth it is a quiet instinct under the whole cross. Its lines run from Confusion and Cleansing to The Director and Utilization.

Two motors and a pressure Center

Three of the four Gates sit in motor Centers. Gates 39 and 38 are in the Root, which is both a motor and a pressure Center, the push to begin. Gate 51 is in the Heart, the motor of willpower and worth. Only Gate 57, in the Spleen, is not a motor, and it is the one awareness Center in the cross.

That is a lot of drive for a purpose that is supposed to work through other people. The pressure and the will are strong, and the instinct is quiet and arrives once. The cross tends to teach the difference between pushing because you are pressed and acting because the moment is right.

Individual circuit all the way through

Every Channel these four Gates can complete belongs to the Individual circuit: Struggle, Emoting, Initiation, Perfected Form, The Brainwave and Power. No other circuit appears, so this is a cross with one sound.

It is also a pleasing tension. The Individual circuit is about being yourself, and the Left Angle is about working your life out through other people. The cross asks what it means to be unmistakably yourself in a way that other people can use, argue with and learn from.

Gate 57 and its three Channels

Gate 57 is the one Spleen Gate, and it can make three Channels. With Gate 10 it makes Perfected Form with the G Center. With Gate 20 it makes The Brainwave with the Throat. With Gate 34 it makes Power with the Sacral. The same quiet instinct can reach identity, voice or life force, depending on the partner.

Because this is a Left Angle cross, the partner often comes from someone else. A person who carries Gate 10, 20 or 34 can complete one of these Channels with you, and the instinct stops being a private hunch and becomes something you can share.

Why the Individualism is a Left Angle cross

A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Individualism the point is a paradox: you only discover how individual you are by meeting people who are not like you. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 39.5 means Gate 39, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Individualism cross.

Individualism 1: Personality Sun in Gate 39, Provocation
39.1 DisengagementYou pull back from provocation that has no point, and your distance tells people when you are truly engaged.
39.2 ConfrontationYou challenge people straight, and those who stay become the ones who really know you.
39.3 ResponsibilityYou take responsibility for what you stir up, and that is what separates provoking from only causing trouble.
39.4 TemperanceYou know when to ease off, and knowing that keeps your challenges from turning into fights.
39.5 Single-mindednessYou stay locked on one purpose, and a provocation with that focus is hard for anyone to ignore.
39.6 The TroubleshooterYou see where a situation will break before it does, and others bring you in to solve it.
Individualism 2: Personality Sun in Gate 38, The Fighter
38.1 QualificationYou test whether a fight is worth having before you start it, and that care gives it weight.
38.2 PolitenessYou stay courteous even in opposition, and that keeps the people you disagree with listening.
38.3 AllianceYou find your allies by fighting beside them, and the alliances you form stay with you.
38.4 InvestigationYou look into a matter before you pick a side, so your opposition rests on facts.
38.5 AlienationYou can end up feeling cut off by the very stand you took, and the cross asks you to reach back out.
38.6 MisunderstandingYou will be misunderstood at times, and the work is to keep your purpose clear anyway.

Living the Individualism cross

At work

People with Individualism often turn up in work as the one who tests the plan: the colleague who asks the hard question or defends an unpopular idea. It goes best when you are asked for that role. Pushing back with nobody invited tends to use up your energy and the goodwill of the room.

In relationships

In relationships the cross works through contrast. A partner or friend who is different from you shows you where you stand. Notice whether you are using disagreement to find out who you are or only to stay in motion. Not every difference needs a fight.

In decisions

Individualism gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Strong pressure to act is not the same as a signal to act. Wait for your instinct to speak, since it will only speak once.

Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your individuality come from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Individualism cross is misread

"Individualism means I do things alone"

The Individual circuit is about being yourself, but this is a Left Angle cross, which works out through other people. The cross asks you to be distinct in company, not to withdraw from it.

"Provocation and The Fighter mean I am built for conflict"

Those are names of Gates. Their lines include Politeness, Temperance and Responsibility. The cross is about pushing with purpose, and the Spleen Gate in the Design pair adds a quiet instinct for when to stop.

"Shock means my life will be unstable"

Gate 51 is a jolt that sits in the Heart, the center of willpower, and its lines include Reference, Adaptation and Symmetry. The cross carries the capacity to be startled into action, not a promise of chaos.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 39: Where did you last push back on someone, and did it bring out who they really are?
  2. Gate 38: What is worth fighting for in your life right now, and what is only habit?
  3. Gate 51: When did something last jolt you into action, and what did you do next?
  4. Gate 57: What did your gut tell you quietly today, and how long did it take you to hear it?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Individualism rotation you carry, your Sun line, and whether Gates 55, 28, 25, 10, 20 or 34 complete a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Individualism

What is the Left Angle Cross of Individualism?

It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 39, 38, 51 and 57. Its theme is a distinct way of being, tested by pressure and provocation, that is worked out through other people.

Which Individualism rotation do I have?

Look at the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 39/38 | 51/57 is Individualism 1, with Provocation as your Personality Sun. 38/39 | 57/51 is Individualism 2, with The Fighter as your Personality Sun.

Why are all the Channels in the Individual circuit?

Each Gate in the cross completes a Channel of that circuit: Struggle, Emoting, Initiation, Perfected Form, The Brainwave or Power. The canon places all four Gates in the Individual circuit, so no Collective or Tribal Channel appears.

Which Center is the awareness Center in this cross?

The Spleen, through Gate 57. It is the Center of instinct and the immune system, and it works in the present moment only. The other three Gates are in the Root and the Heart, which are motors.

How do Opposition and Obstruction shape Individualism?

Gate 38, The Fighter, carries Opposition and Gate 39, Provocation, carries Obstruction. Both are Root Gates in the Individual circuit and opposites of each other, and they are the conscious pair in Individualism 1. The first sets you against something and the second puts something in your way.

How do The Arousing and The Gentle share a pair in Individualism?

Gate 51, Shock, carries The Arousing, and Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, carries The Gentle. They are opposites and the Design pair. Shock sits in the Heart, a motor Center, and Intuitive Clarity in the Spleen, an awareness Center, so a loud Gate and a soft one work side by side.
