Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition
The Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 38, 39, 51 and 57, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path built on friction: a fighter and a provocation at its base, with a gentle clarity and a shock beneath.
Simple way to think about it: Opposition is the sparring partner. It is not the match, and it does not need to win, but without it nobody learns how strong they are or where their guard drops.

The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (38/39 | 57/51). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Opposition cross on the BodyGraph
Three Centers hold the four Gates: the Root, the Heart and the Spleen. Gates 38 and 39 are both in the Root, and they are the pair the Right Angle Cross of Tension carries. Gates 57 and 51, the Design pair, come from the Right Angle Cross of Penetration. All four Gates sit in the Individual circuit, and none forms a Channel with another.

How the Opposition cross is placed
The Opposition (38/39 | 57/51)
The Fighter is your conscious Sun and Provocation your conscious Earth, so both Root Gates sit on the side you know. You feel the pressure to push and be pushed directly. Intuitive Clarity and Shock run on the Design side, an instinct and a jolt that others may see in you before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 38: The Fighter
Gate 38, The Fighter, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Root, the pressure Center. Its hexagram is called Opposition. It belongs to the Individual circuit and completes Channel 28-38, Struggle, with Gate 28 in the Spleen, a Design of Stubbornness. Its lines run from Qualification to Misunderstanding. The fourth, Investigation, is fixed in every Opposition chart: the fight is for something, and it starts by looking closely at what is there.
Gate 39: Provocation
Gate 39, Provocation, is the conscious Earth and also sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Obstruction, and it belongs to the Individual circuit. It completes Channel 39-55, Emoting, with Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus, a Design of Moodiness. Its lines run from Disengagement to The Troubleshooter. The fourth, Temperance, is fixed here, so the provocation comes with a sense of measure: it presses, but it knows how far to go, and it grounds the cross in that restraint.
Gate 57: Intuitive Clarity
Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, is the Design Sun and sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct and fear. The Gate carries the hexagram The Gentle and sits in the Individual circuit. It can complete Channel 10-57, 20-57 or 34-57, with partners in the G Center, the Throat and the Sacral. Its first line, Confusion, is fixed here: below awareness the clarity does not arrive tidy. It begins in confusion and clears as it is lived.
Gate 51: Shock
Gate 51, Shock, is the Design Earth and sits in the Heart, the Center of willpower and worth. Its hexagram is The Arousing. Its Channel partner is Gate 25 in the G Center, forming 25-51, Initiation, which the canon describes as a Design of Needing to Be First. Its first line, Reference, is fixed here, so under the friction there is a need for something to refer back to, a point against which a jolt can be steadied.
Both conscious Gates in the Root
The Root is a pressure Center and a motor, the Center of adrenaline, stress and the push to begin. Gates 38 and 39 are both there, and both are on the Personality side. The pressure is something you know about from the inside.
The two Gates are opposite each other on the wheel, as every Sun and Earth pair is, and their names point the same way: one fights, the other provokes. What neither does is decide. They push; your Authority chooses what to do with the push.
All four Gates in one circuit
Every Gate of this cross belongs to the Individual circuit, and so does every Channel it can complete: 28-38, 39-55, 25-51 and the three Channels of Gate 57. The Channels its Gates complete all belong to one circuit.
Its Channels fall into the circuit's three groups: Knowing (28-38, 39-55 and 20-57), Centering (25-51) and Integration (10-57 and 34-57). The cross has a single way of working, and the variety comes from which partners your chart supplies.
Two motors and an instinct
Two of the three Centers are motors, the Root and the Heart, and the third is the Spleen, the awareness Center of instinct. The cross has plenty of drive and exactly one awareness Center, and it sits on the Design side, with Gate 57.
So the conscious side runs on pressure while the awareness is below the surface. In practice, the push is felt loudly and the instinct quietly, and it helps to learn to hear the second.
Why the Opposition is a Juxtaposition cross
Opposition keeps one position, and the position is a stance. The fighter, the provocation, the instinct and the shock all stay in place and so do their lines, so there is no gentler version of the cross to grow into. The work is to aim the opposition at things that deserve it. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Opposition cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Opposition cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 38.4 Investigation | Your fight begins with investigation, so you look closely at what you are opposing before you push. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 39.4 Temperance | Your provocation is measured, and you know how far to press a person or an idea before you stop. |
| Design Sun: Gate 57.1 Confusion | Below awareness your clarity starts out confused and clears with time, which others may take for patience. |
| Design Earth: Gate 51.1 Reference | Your shock has something to refer to, so a sudden jolt steadies once you find the reference. |
Living the Opposition cross
At work
Opposition suits work that needs someone to test an idea against resistance: auditing, debate, quality control, negotiation, competitive fields. The fighter looks closely before it pushes, and the provocation knows its limits. Choose battles where the disagreement improves the result, and leave the rest alone, however much the Root pressure asks you to engage.
In relationships
At home the cross can turn into friction for its own sake. A provocation that is measured at work can feel sharp to a partner. Notice the difference between testing an idea and testing a person, and tell people which one you are doing. The Design side adds a jolt that others may feel before you do.
In decisions
Pressure in the Root is not a signal to act. Both conscious Gates are there, so the urge to push is easy to mistake for a decision. Let it pass through, and bring the choice to your Type and your inner Authority.
Opposition supplies the push; your Type and Authority decide whether and when to use it. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Opposition cross is misread
"Opposition means I am always in conflict"
"Two Root Gates means I am stressed"
"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Individualism"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 38: What are you opposing right now, and have you looked closely at it?
- Gate 39: When you press on someone, how do you know when to stop?
- Gate 57: Which unclear feeling has been getting clearer the longer you live with it?
- Gate 51: What do you refer back to when something jolts you?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 38, 39, 51 and 57, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path built on friction: a fighter and a provocation at its base, with a gentle clarity and a shock beneath.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition?
They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 38.4 Investigation as the Personality Sun, 39.4 Temperance as the Personality Earth, 57.1 Confusion as the Design Sun, and 51.1 Reference as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.
How does Gate 51, Shock, bring its jolt through the Heart in Opposition?
Gate 51 is the Design Earth and the cross's only Heart Gate. The Heart is the Center of willpower and worth, so the shock here is tied to what a person will stand behind. The fixed first line, Reference, gives the jolt something to be steadied against.
What does Investigation, line 4 of Gate 38, add to The Fighter in Opposition?
Gate 38, The Fighter, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Root. Its fixed fourth line, Investigation, is carried by every chart with this cross, so the fighting spirit comes with a habit of looking into what it opposes before committing to the struggle.
Which Center holds the awareness in Opposition?
The Spleen, through Gate 57, the Design Sun. It is the only awareness Center among the four Gates, and it works in the present tense, speaking once.
Where do the Root Gates of Opposition lead?
Gate 38 leads to the Spleen through Channel 28-38, Struggle, and Gate 39 to the Solar Plexus through Channel 39-55, Emoting. Each needs its partner Gate from the rest of your chart.
