Left Angle Cross of Alignment
The Left Angle Cross of Alignment is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 27, 28, 19 and 33. It is about care, risk, need and retreat: bringing your life into line with the people you depend on and the people who depend on you, worked out through relationships.
Simple way to think about it: Think of two people carrying a long ladder through a doorway. Each has to read the other's pace, tilt at the right moment and stop when the other stops. Nobody is in charge of the ladder; it only gets through if both are in step. Alignment is that kind of carrying.

The two rotations of the Alignment cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Alignment 1 (27/28 | 19/33)
With Caring as your conscious Sun, you lead with what you give: how you nourish others and how much of yourself you will spend. The Game Player, your conscious Earth, adds the risk of doing it your own way. Wanting and Privacy work on the Design side, so your needs and your retreats run below awareness. This rotation sits in the quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.
The Alignment 2 (28/27 | 33/19)
With The Game Player as your conscious Sun, you lead with how you take chances and how you play the odds, and Caring, your conscious Earth, grounds the risk in who it is for. Privacy and Wanting run on the Design side, so others may see when you pull back or reach out before you do. This rotation sits in the quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 27: Caring
Gate 27, Caring, sits in the Sacral, the largest motor Center and the seat of life force and work. Its hexagram is Nourishment. It completes Channel 27-50 with Gate 50 in the Spleen, named Preservation, a Channel of the Tribal circuit. Its lines run from Selfishness and Self-sufficiency to Generosity and Wariness, through Greed and The Executor. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of what you give and what you keep. As an Earth it grounds the cross in looking after others.
Gate 28: The Game Player
Gate 28, The Game Player, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct that speaks once and in the present. Its hexagram is Preponderance of the Great. It completes Channel 28-38 with Gate 38 in the Root, named Struggle, a Channel of the Individual circuit. Its lines run from Preparation to Blaze of glory, through Adventurism and Holding on. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of which risks are worth taking. As an Earth it keeps the cross from playing safe.
Gate 19: Wanting
Gate 19, Wanting, sits in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive. Its hexagram is Approach. It completes Channel 19-49 with Gate 49 in the Solar Plexus, named Synthesis, a Channel of the Tribal circuit. Its lines run from Interdependence and Service to Sacrifice and The Recluse, with The Team Player along the way. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, a need for closeness that works in the background and that others may see first.
Gate 33: Privacy
Gate 33, Privacy, is the Throat Gate of the cross, and its hexagram is Retreat. It completes Channel 13-33 with Gate 13 in the G Center, named The Prodigal, a Channel of the Collective circuit. Its lines run from Avoidance and Surrender to Timing and Dissociation, through Spirit and Dignity. Like Gate 19 it works on the Design side in both rotations, so the way you step back and the way you return are shaped before you plan them.
Wanting and Privacy: a pair that pulls two ways
Gate 19 and Gate 33 are opposites on the wheel and the Design pair of this cross. One wants closeness. The other withdraws. Interdependence is the first line of Wanting, and Avoidance is the first line of Privacy, so the pair already holds the argument between needing people and needing to be away from them.
Because both work on the Design side in each rotation, this tension often shows up in other people's eyes first. A friend may say you went quiet before you noticed you had stepped back, or that you reached out before you knew you wanted company. The cross does not settle it. It asks you to keep returning to the question of what you need, and from whom.
Caring and The Game Player: the conscious pair
Gate 27 and Gate 28 are the conscious pair, and they could hardly be more different. Caring is about nourishment: who you feed, protect and make room for. The Game Player is about preponderance, the big gamble, the move that might pay off or might not. Together they ask whether looking after people and taking chances can be the same act.
In a Left Angle cross, that question is lived in front of others. Generosity is a line of Caring, and Treachery is a line of The Game Player, so the pair covers both ends of what other people can do with your trust and your daring. Alignment, as a name, suggests what happens when care and risk line up instead of pulling against each other.
Three circuits at once, and two motors among the four Gates
The Channels these four Gates complete belong to three circuits. Channels 27-50 and 19-49 are Tribal, the circuit about bonds, support and defense. Channel 28-38 is Individual, the circuit about being yourself. Channel 13-33 is Collective, the circuit about shared experience. The cross touches all three.
Two of the Centers are motors: the Sacral and the Root. The Spleen is the awareness Center, and the Throat is where Gate 33 sits. So drive, instinct and expression are all present, spread one to a Center. That is a lot of range for a cross, and it fits a purpose that is worked out through many kinds of people rather than one kind.
Why the Alignment is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Alignment that is built into the name. Things only come into line when there is someone to line up with, and the people you meet decide what the alignment looks like. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 27.5 means Gate 27, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Alignment cross.
Alignment 1: Personality Sun in Gate 27, Caring
| 27.1 Selfishness | You look after your own needs first, and the cross asks you to see that this can be a form of care. |
|---|---|
| 27.2 Self-sufficiency | You can manage on your own, and your caring is stronger because you do not need anything back. |
| 27.3 Greed | You can take more than you give, and noticing that tendency is how you learn what is fair. |
| 27.4 Generosity | You give freely, and the cross asks you to give where it will be used and not simply taken. |
| 27.5 The Executor | You are the one who gets things done for others, and people lean on that without always saying thanks. |
| 27.6 Wariness | You stay watchful about who you help, and that caution protects the care you have to give. |
Alignment 2: Personality Sun in Gate 28, The Game Player
| 28.1 Preparation | You prepare before you take a chance, and that groundwork is what makes your risks worth following. |
|---|---|
| 28.2 Shaking hands with the devil | You will bargain with risky people or ideas, and the cross asks you to know your own limits first. |
| 28.3 Adventurism | You enjoy a risk for its own sake, and the cross asks you to count who else is affected. |
| 28.4 Holding on | You hold on when others let go, and knowing what is worth holding is your lesson. |
| 28.5 Treachery | You are watched closely when you take a risk, and people may judge your motives before the outcome is known. |
| 28.6 Blaze of glory | You want your life to count, and you may go all out when you feel the stakes are real. |
Living the Alignment cross
At work
People with this cross often take the role no one assigned: the one who looks after the team, backs a risky plan, or notices who is stretched too thin. Work goes best when you are allowed to give and to gamble in ways that others can see. Watch for jobs that ask for care with no room for choice, or risk with no one to share it.
In relationships
In relationships this cross works through the push and pull of closeness. Caring draws you to give, Wanting draws you to need, and Privacy draws you away. A partner who understands that all three belong to you will give you space to move between them without taking it personally.
In decisions
Alignment does not hand you an answer for each choice. It gives your life a theme: care, risk, need and retreat, lived with other people. When a decision involves someone else, ask what each of you needs before you act, and give the answer time to settle.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let the bonds you build come from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Alignment cross is misread
"Alignment means I should agree with the people around me"
"Wanting and Privacy cancel each other out"
"Left Angle means my purpose belongs to other people"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 27: Who have you been looking after lately, and who looks after you?
- Gate 28: What risk is on your mind right now, and who else would be affected by it?
- Gate 19: What do you actually need from the people closest to you that you have not asked for?
- Gate 33: When did you last step back from a situation, and what brought you back?
