Left Angle Cross of Masks
The Left Angle Cross of Masks is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 13, 7, 43 and 23. It is about the roles you take on when you deal with people, the listening that comes first, and an inner insight that you learn to say aloud through your relationships.
Simple way to think about it: Think of an actor who listens before every line. The part is only half of the performance, because the other half is the scene partner who answers. Masks is that kind of life: the roles you play are shaped by who is across from you, and the best moments come when you hear them first.

Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Masks cross on the BodyGraph
The Gates sit in three Centers: Gates 7 and 13 in the G Center, Gate 23 in the Throat and Gate 43 in the Ajna. Your conscious side comes from the same pair as the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx, while the Design pair, 43 and 23, is borrowed from the Right Angle Cross of Explanation.

The two rotations of the Masks cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Masks 1 (13/7 | 43/23)
With The Listener as your conscious Sun, you are here to hear people before you answer them, and The Role of the Self in Interaction, the conscious Earth, shapes the part you play once you have. Insight is the Design Sun and Assimilation the Design Earth. This rotation sits in the Initiation quarter, purpose fulfilled through Mind.
The Masks 2 (7/13 | 23/43)
Here The Role of the Self in Interaction is the conscious Sun: the part you play with others is the first question, and The Listener, the conscious Earth, keeps you honest about what they actually said. Assimilation is the Design Sun and Insight the Design Earth. This rotation sits in the Duality quarter, purpose fulfilled through Bonding.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 13: The Listener
Gate 13, The Listener, sits in the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Its hexagram is The Fellowship of Man. It completes Channel 13-33, The Prodigal, with Gate 33 in the Throat. Its lines run from Empathy and Bigotry to The Saviour and The Optimist. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of what you hear in people and what you do with it. As an Earth it keeps your roles grounded in real listening.
Gate 7: The Role of the Self in Interaction
Gate 7, The Role of the Self in Interaction, also sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Army. It completes Channel 7-31, The Alpha, with Gate 31 in the Throat. Its six lines are six ways of holding a role, from Authoritarian and The Democrat to The Abdicator, The General and The Administrator. As a Sun it makes your purpose the role you play in a group. As an Earth it grounds another theme in how you carry yourself among people.
Gate 43: Insight
Gate 43, Insight, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts, opinions and certainty. Its hexagram is Breakthrough. It completes Channel 23-43, Structuring, with Gate 23, which this cross also holds. Its lines include Patience, Dedication, Expediency and The one-track mind, and end in Breakthrough. It sits on the Design side in both rotations, so an insight can arrive whole, below awareness, before you know how to explain it. Others may notice the leap in your thinking before you do.
Gate 23: Assimilation
Gate 23, Assimilation, sits in the Throat, the Center where everything that leaves you passes through. Its hexagram is Splitting Apart. It completes Channel 23-43, Structuring, with Gate 43. Its lines run from Proselytization and Self-defense to Individuality, Fragmentation and Fusion. It is also on the Design side in both rotations, so the voice that carries your insight works below awareness, and others may hear it before you know it has spoken.
One Channel that everyone with Masks carries
Gates 23 and 43 are both in this cross, and together they form Channel 23-43, Structuring. Every rotation carries all four Gates, so everyone with the Left Angle Cross of Masks has this Channel defined. It is also why this cross never belongs to a Reflector.
Structuring joins the Ajna to the Throat, and it is part of the Individual circuit, in the Knowing sub-circuit. In rotation 1 it comes from Gate 43 as the Design Sun and Gate 23 as the Design Earth. In rotation 2 the two swap. Either way it sits on the Design side, which means the Channel works whether or not you notice it.
Every Channel here runs to the Throat
Look at the three Channels this cross can complete. Channel 7-31 ends in the Throat through Gate 31. Channel 13-33 ends in the Throat through Gate 33. Channel 23-43 ends in the Throat through Gate 23, which you already hold. All three are routes by which something inside you becomes something you say.
That gives the cross a particular shape: two Gates in the G Center that wait for a voice, one Gate in the Throat itself, and one in the Ajna that supplies the idea. None of the four Gates sits in a motor Center, so nothing here pushes. What you say comes from what you have heard and understood, and the Throat is where it finally gets out.
A conscious side made of roles and listening
Your conscious Sun and Earth are Gates 7 and 13, always in one order or the other. Gate 7 is about the role of the self in interaction, with lines such as The General and The Administrator. Gate 13 is about listening, with lines such as Empathy and The Optimist.
Put together, they describe someone who learns what part to play by hearing what others need. The risk is the one the name hints at: a role can harden into a mask, a fixed face you wear so you do not have to listen. The cross asks for the reverse, a role that stays open to the person in front of you.
Why the Masks is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Masks that is close to a definition. A role needs an audience, listening needs someone speaking, and a Channel that ends in the Throat needs someone willing to hear. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 13.5 means Gate 13, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Masks cross.
Masks 1: Personality Sun in Gate 13, The Listener
| 13.1 Empathy | You listen with real empathy, and people tell you what they have told no one else. |
|---|---|
| 13.2 Bigotry | You carry fixed opinions about what you hear, and the cross asks you to notice where they came from. |
| 13.3 Pessimism | You hear how things can go wrong, and your caution protects the people you listen to. |
| 13.4 Fatigue | You tire when you hold too many stories at once, and rest is part of how you keep listening. |
| 13.5 The Saviour | People bring you their troubles hoping you will fix them, and you must choose which ones are yours to take. |
| 13.6 The Optimist | You believe things can turn out well, and that hope helps others carry what they hear. |
Masks 2: Personality Sun in Gate 7, The Role of the Self in Interaction
| 7.1 Authoritarian | You lead by laying down the terms, and the cross asks you to check that others agreed to them. |
|---|---|
| 7.2 The Democrat | You ask the group what it wants and shape the role around the answer. |
| 7.3 The Anarchist | You resist the role you are handed, and your refusal shows others where the structure is weak. |
| 7.4 The Abdicator | You step back from the role when it does not fit, and that leaves room for someone else. |
| 7.5 The General | You take charge when a group needs direction, and people look to you to make the call. |
| 7.6 The Administrator | You run the details of the role, and the group trusts what you keep in order. |
Living the Masks cross
At work
Masks people are often the ones colleagues talk to before a meeting and after it. Work goes best when the role you hold is clear and honestly suited to you, so you are not wearing one that hides what you have heard. Say what you noticed, even briefly, and let your insight reach the people who can use it.
In relationships
In relationships the cross works through the other person, so how you listen shapes who you become with them. A partner who gives you time to find your words draws out your best. Notice when you answer from a role, the helper or the one in charge, before you have heard what was said.
In decisions
Masks gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. An insight may arrive complete and still need time before you speak it. You do not have to announce it the moment you have it.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your roles follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Masks cross is misread
"Masks means I am fake"
"Left Angle means my roles are chosen for me"
"Structuring means I always know what to say"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 13: Who talked to you most openly this month, and what did you actually hear?
- Gate 7: Which role are you playing most often with other people, and does it still fit?
- Gate 43: What insight have you been holding back because you do not yet have the words?
- Gate 23: When did you last say something that landed exactly as you meant it, and what made that possible?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Masks
What is the Left Angle Cross of Masks?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 7, 13, 23 and 43. Its theme is the roles you play with other people, the listening behind them, and an insight you learn to voice through relationships.
Which Masks rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 13/7 | 43/23 is Masks 1, with The Listener as your Personality Sun. 7/13 | 23/43 is Masks 2, with The Role of the Self in Interaction as your Personality Sun.
How do The Army and The Fellowship of Man fit together in Masks?
Gate 7 carries the hexagram The Army and Gate 13 carries The Fellowship of Man. Both sit in the G Center and make the conscious pair, with Gate 13 as the Personality Sun in Masks 1. One is your role in an interaction and the other is listening.
Is Masks a Reflector cross?
No. A Reflector has no defined Channels, and everyone with Masks has Channel 23-43. So this cross is never carried by a Reflector, although it says nothing else about which of the other four Types you are.
Why do all of the Masks Channels end in the Throat?
Because every Gate has its partner there. Gate 7 pairs with Gate 31 in the Throat, Gate 13 pairs with Gate 33 in the Throat, and Gate 43 pairs with Gate 23, which sits in the Throat itself.
What changes between Masks 1 and Masks 2?
Masks 1 opens with The Listener as the conscious Sun, in the Initiation quarter. Masks 2 opens with The Role of the Self in Interaction, in the Duality quarter. The Gates are the same four, and the order of Sun and Earth swaps on both sides.
