Juxtaposition Cross of Listening
The Juxtaposition Cross of Listening is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 13, 7, 43 and 23, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path where two G Center Gates listen on the surface while Channel 23-43 always runs underneath as a Design voice.
Simple way to think about it: Listening is a switchboard operator. The calls arrive at the G Center, the connection is made at the Throat, and what matters most is who gets put through to whom.

The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Listening cross on the BodyGraph
Three Centers hold the four Gates. Gates 13 and 7 are both in the G Center, Gate 23 is in the Throat and Gate 43 in the Ajna. The conscious pair, 13 and 7, is found in the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx; the Design pair, 43 and 23, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Explanation.

How the Listening cross is placed
The Listening (13/7 | 43/23)
The Listener is your conscious Sun and The Role of the Self in Interaction your conscious Earth, so both G Center Gates are the side you know. Insight and Assimilation run on the Design side and together form a Channel you carry whether or not you notice it working.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 13: The Listener
Gate 13, The Listener, is the conscious Sun and sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Fellowship of Man. It completes Channel 13-33, The Prodigal, with Gate 33 in the Throat, keynoted as a Design of a Witness. Its fourth line, Fatigue, is fixed in this cross, so the listening costs something. Taking in what others bring is real work, and the line reminds you that it needs rest as well as attention.
Gate 7: The Role of the Self in Interaction
Gate 7, The Role of the Self in Interaction, is the conscious Earth and the second G Center Gate. Its hexagram is The Army. It completes Channel 7-31, The Alpha, with Gate 31 in the Throat, keynoted as leadership for good or bad. Its fourth line, The Abdicator, is fixed here, so the Earth knows how to step back and leave the lead to someone else. In this cross, hearing a person out is part of leading them.
Gate 43: Insight
Gate 43, Insight, is the Design Sun and the cross's Ajna Gate. Its hexagram is Breakthrough. It completes Channel 23-43, Structuring, with Gate 23 in the Throat, and in this cross that Channel is always whole. Its first line, Patience, is fixed here: the idea is allowed to ripen before it is spoken. The hexagram is a breakthrough, a sudden opening, and as the Design Sun it arrives when it is ready, not when it is asked for.
Gate 23: Assimilation
Gate 23, Assimilation, is the Design Earth and the cross's only Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Splitting Apart. It completes Channel 23-43, Structuring, with Gate 43 in the Ajna, so it is the voice end of that Channel. Its first line, Proselytization, is fixed here, which is the pull to explain, convince and bring others round to what the Insight has seen. Patience on the Sun side holds that pull until the idea is ready.
A Channel every chart with this cross carries
Gates 23 and 43 are both in this cross, and together they form Channel 23-43, Structuring. Because every chart with this cross carries all four Gates, everyone with it has that Channel defined. The Throat and the Ajna are therefore always defined, and a Reflector is not possible.
Both Gates are on the Design side, with Gate 43 as the Sun and Gate 23 as the Earth. The Channel belongs to the Individual circuit, and its keynote is individuality, from genius to freak. The cross fixes those two Centers. It does not fix your Type or Authority, which depend on the rest of the chart.
Two G Center Gates, each with a door to the Throat
The G Center is identity, direction and love, and both conscious Gates sit in it. Gates 13 and 7 are opposite each other on the wheel, and each can complete a Channel into the Throat: 13-33 with Gate 33 and 7-31 with Gate 31.
If you have one of those, the identity side of the cross has a route to the voice. If you have neither, you may know exactly who you are and where you are headed, and still wait for the right moment or the right listener to say it.
A voice that waits for its audience
None of the four Gates sits in a motor Center. The cross is made of identity, a Throat and an Ajna, which is a fair description of a person who thinks, understands and says. What it does not bring is the energy to act or push.
That makes the setting matter. People with this cross often speak best when they are asked. The fixed lines agree: Patience on the Sun, Fatigue and The Abdicator on the conscious side, and Proselytization as the one line that wants to be heard.
Why the Listening is a Juxtaposition cross
With Listening, the fixed part is not only the lines but the Channel. Whatever else changes in a life, the same Structuring runs under it, and the same two G Gates take in the world above it. Nothing in the cross asks you to become more talkative. It asks you to know when your listening is the contribution. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Listening cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Listening cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 13.4 Fatigue | Your listening takes effort, so you may need rest after taking in what others bring to you. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 7.4 The Abdicator | Your place in an exchange is to stand back at the right moment and let someone else lead. |
| Design Sun: Gate 43.1 Patience | Below awareness you wait for an idea to ripen, so your insights come when they are ready. |
| Design Earth: Gate 23.1 Proselytization | Your voice carries a pull to explain and convince, and the fixed line shows it from the first word. |
Living the Listening cross
At work
People with Listening tend to be the ones who hear what a team really needs: facilitators, advisors, editors, counselors, researchers. They are often most useful in the first half hour of a meeting, when they are asked what they heard. They need room to think before they speak and a rhythm of work that includes rest. Ask for the time, because Insight and Patience do not respond well to a deadline.
In relationships
Close to home, you are probably the one people tell things to. That is a gift and a load. The fixed Fatigue line says you do not have to hear everything at once. Say when you are full. Gate 7 also helps you pass the lead to your partner, and Gate 23 will tell you when something does need to be said.
In decisions
Listening is not deciding. Hearing every side, even all of your own, does not tell you which to take.
Decide by your Type and inner Authority, and let the cross show you who needs to hear the decision, and when. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Listening cross is misread
"Listening means I should never speak first"
"A defined Channel means I am a Projector"
"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Masks"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 13: Who has been telling you things lately, and what would it cost you to keep listening?
- Gate 7: In what situation could you step back this week and let someone else lead?
- Gate 43: What idea are you letting ripen, and what would tell you it is ready?
- Gate 23: What do you most want to explain to someone, and have you waited long enough to say it clearly?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Listening
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Listening?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 13, 7, 43 and 23, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path with two G Center Gates on the conscious side and the Throat and Ajna joined by Channel 23-43 on the Design side.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Listening?
They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 13.4 Fatigue as the Personality Sun, 7.4 The Abdicator as the Personality Earth, 43.1 Patience as the Design Sun, and 23.1 Proselytization as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.
What does it mean that Channel 23-43 is always defined in Listening?
Gates 23 and 43 are both in the cross, so every chart with it has the Channel, Structuring. The Throat and the Ajna are always defined, and a Reflector is not possible. Type and Authority are not fixed.
Does Listening rule out a Projector or Generator?
No. The Channel joins the Throat and the Ajna and does not touch a motor. Whether you are a Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator or Projector depends on the rest of the Channels in your chart.
How does Listening get its route to the Throat?
Gate 23 sits in the Throat itself. Gate 13 can complete Channel 13-33, The Prodigal, with Gate 33, and Gate 7 can complete Channel 7-31, The Alpha, with Gate 31. Both end in the Throat.
When does the Insight of Gate 43 arrive?
On its own time. Gate 43 is the Design Sun, the Ajna Gate, and its fixed first line is Patience. The hexagram is Breakthrough, so the insight tends to open up suddenly when it is ready, not on request.
