Left Angle Cross of Cycles
The Left Angle Cross of Cycles is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 53, 54, 42 and 32. It is about starting, growing and sustaining what you begin: pressure to start, ambition, a Sacral that runs the cycle, and instinct for what lasts, all worked out through other people.
Simple way to think about it: Picture someone who keeps a sourdough starter alive. It needs feeding on its own schedule, it rises when it is ready and not before, and what it makes ends up feeding everyone at the table. Cycles is that kind of work: patient, physical, and shared.

Look for the line that reads Left Angle Cross of Cycles. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (53/54 | 42/32). Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Cycles cross on the BodyGraph
All four Gates sit low in the body, in just three Centers: two in the Root, one in the Sacral and one in the Spleen. Gates 53 and 54 are the conscious pair that also appears in the Right Angle Cross of Penetration, and Gates 32 and 42 are the Design pair from the Right Angle Cross of Maya.

The two rotations of the Cycles cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Cycles 1 (53/54 | 42/32)
With Beginnings as your conscious Sun, you are here to start things: you feel the pressure to begin and the need to see a cycle through, and Ambition, your conscious Earth, gives the start a direction. On the Design side, Growth is the Sun and Continuity the Earth, so the capacity to build on a start, and the instinct for what will last, work below awareness.
The Cycles 2 (54/53 | 32/42)
With Ambition as your conscious Sun, you start from wanting to rise and to be somebody in what you do, and Beginnings, the conscious Earth, supplies the pressure to start. On the Design side, Continuity is the Sun and Growth the Earth, so an instinct for what will last runs underneath and others may see it in you before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 53: Beginnings
Gate 53, Beginnings, sits in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive. Its hexagram is Development. It completes Channel 42-53 with Gate 42, which is also in this cross, so the Channel is always defined. That Channel is called Maturation and is keynoted as balanced development. Its lines run from Accumulation and Momentum through Practicality and Assuredness to Assertion and Phasing. As a Sun it makes your purpose the pressure to begin and see through. As an Earth it grounds another theme in the push to start.
Gate 54: Ambition
Gate 54, Ambition, also sits in the Root. Its hexagram is The Marrying Maiden. It completes Channel 32-54 with Gate 32, also in this cross, so that Channel is always defined too. The Channel is called Transformation and is keynoted as being driven. Its lines run from Influence and Discretion through Covert interaction and Enlightenment/Endarkenment to Magnanimity and Selectivity. As a Sun it makes your purpose the drive to rise. As an Earth it gives another theme somewhere to aim.
Gate 42: Growth
Gate 42, Growth, sits in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Its hexagram is Increase. It completes Channel 42-53 with Gate 53 in the Root. Its lines run from Diversification and Identification through Trial and error to The Middle Man, Self-actualization and Nurturing. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations: the capacity to grow what has begun is built in and runs ahead of your own awareness of it.
Gate 32: Continuity
Gate 32, Continuity, sits in the Spleen, the Center of instinct that speaks once and in the present. Its hexagram is Duration. It completes Channel 32-54 with Gate 54 in the Root. Its lines run from Conservation and Restraint through Lack of continuity and Right is might to Flexibility and Tranquility. It is on the Design side in both rotations, a quiet instinct for what will last and what will not, which the rest of the cross relies on without being told.
Two Channels that every Cycles chart has
This cross holds both ends of two Channels. Gates 42 and 53 make Channel 42-53, Maturation, and Gates 32 and 54 make Channel 32-54, Transformation. Every rotation carries all four Gates, so everyone with this cross has both Channels defined. Nobody with it is a Reflector.
That is unusually specific. Channel 42-53 joins the Sacral and the Root, so the Sacral is defined, and everyone with this cross is a Generator or a Manifesting Generator. Channel 32-54 joins the Spleen and the Root, so the Spleen is defined as well. The Sacral, the Root and the Spleen all connect through the Root, which makes a single group of three Centers before anything else in the chart is counted.
Your Authority is one of two
A defined Sacral narrows the Authority to two options. If the Solar Plexus is defined somewhere else in your chart, it takes over and your Authority is Emotional. If it is not, the Sacral is the highest defined Center and your Authority is Sacral. The Spleen is defined here, but the Sacral outranks it, so Splenic Authority does not apply to this cross.
The cross itself does not decide which of the two you have. It only rules out the others. That matters because the Spleen's quiet instinct is strong in this cross and easy to mistake for your Authority. It is a real input, and it speaks once. The Sacral or the Solar Plexus is what you decide with.
Two Gates in the Root, both on the conscious side
Gates 53 and 54 both sit in the Root, the Center of pressure and drive, and they are the conscious pair in both rotations. Whatever you notice about this cross, you notice it as pressure: the push to begin something, and the want to get somewhere with it. The names say it plainly: Beginnings and Ambition.
The Design pair adds the rest of the cycle. Growth, in the Sacral, is what lets a beginning develop. Continuity, in the Spleen, is the instinct for whether it will last. Taken in order, the four Gate names read as a life cycle: begin, grow, endure, aim higher. Channel 42-53 is also one of the three format energy Channels between the Root and the Sacral, which set a format for the whole circuit they sit in.
Why the Cycles is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Cycles that means the beginnings, growth and endings you go through are rarely solo. Other people bring the thing to start, share the time it takes to grow, and are often the reason it lasts. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 53.5 means Gate 53, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Cycles cross.
Cycles 1: Personality Sun in Gate 53, Beginnings
| 53.1 Accumulation | You gather experience slowly, piece by piece, and what you accumulate becomes the base other people build on. |
|---|---|
| 53.2 Momentum | Once something starts, you keep it moving, and others lean on that momentum without always seeing where it began. |
| 53.3 Practicality | You begin only what you can finish, and your practical sense keeps other people's ideas from going nowhere. |
| 53.4 Assuredness | You start with quiet confidence, and others feel safer beginning something when you are already sure. |
| 53.5 Assertion | You are expected to push things off the ground, and the cross asks you to assert only what you sustain. |
| 53.6 Phasing | You see where one cycle ends and the next begins, and you help others move between them. |
Cycles 2: Personality Sun in Gate 54, Ambition
| 54.1 Influence | You rise by influence more than force, and the people who help you rise matter as much as you do. |
|---|---|
| 54.2 Discretion | You keep your drive to yourself until the time is right, and that discretion earns trust. |
| 54.3 Covert interaction | You work behind the scenes toward what you want, and the cross asks whether others know what you are doing. |
| 54.4 Enlightenment/Endarkenment | Your ambition can lead somewhere clear or somewhere dark, and the people you serve help decide which. |
| 54.5 Magnanimity | You share your gains generously, and that generosity is part of what makes your rise last. |
| 54.6 Selectivity | You choose carefully whom and what to rise with, and your ambition is steadier for it. |
Living the Cycles cross
At work
People with this cross often become the one who gets things going and keeps them going. Work goes best when you respond to something real instead of forcing a start, and when the project is allowed to grow at its own pace. Watch for the pressure to begin more than you can sustain; the Sacral has a limit, and it tells you when you reach it.
In relationships
In relationships the cross is about shared time. You may start close bonds quickly and then find out whether they last, which is where the Spleen's instinct comes in. Notice what your body says about a person in the first moment, and then give the relationship the time it needs. Ambition for the two of you can be good, if the other person wants it too.
In decisions
Cycles gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Because the Sacral is defined, you can answer in the moment, with a yes or a no from the body. Use that, not the pressure to start, to decide what is worth beginning.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your cycles follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Cycles cross is misread
"Cycles means my life will repeat the same patterns"
"My Spleen is defined, so I decide with instinct"
"I am here to climb as high as I can"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 53: What pressure to start something are you feeling, and is it a real beginning or only the urge to be moving?
- Gate 54: What do you want to rise toward, and who would be better off if you got there?
- Gate 42: What have you already begun that is ready to grow, if you stopped starting new things?
- Gate 32: What did your first instinct say about whether this will last, and have you listened?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Cycles
What is the Left Angle Cross of Cycles?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 53, 54, 42 and 32. Its theme is beginning, growing and sustaining what you start, worked out through relationships rather than alone.
Which Cycles rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 53/54 | 42/32 is Cycles 1, with Beginnings as your Personality Sun. 54/53 | 32/42 is Cycles 2, with Ambition as your Personality Sun.
Is everyone with the Cross of Cycles a Generator?
Everyone is a Generator or a Manifesting Generator. Channel 42-53 is always defined and joins the Root to the Sacral, so the Sacral is defined. Which of the two you are depends on whether a motor connects to the Throat elsewhere in your chart.
What is my Authority with the Cross of Cycles?
Emotional if your Solar Plexus is defined somewhere in your chart, and Sacral if it is not. The Spleen is defined by Channel 32-54, but Sacral Authority outranks Splenic, so Splenic does not apply.
What is a format energy Channel, and is 42-53 one?
Yes. There are three Channels between the Root and the Sacral, and each one sets a format for the whole circuit it sits in. Channel 42-53 is one of them. It is a Collective Channel.
What changes if my Profile is 4/1?
The same four Gates then make a Juxtaposition cross, Beginnings or Ambition, instead of a Left Angle cross. The Left Angle goes with the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 Profiles.
