Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions
The Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 17, 18, 38 and 39, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of views and corrections on the conscious side, over a Root pair that pushes against obstacles and finds out what is worth fighting for.
Simple way to think about it: Opinions is the editor with a red pen and a stubborn streak. Every page gets a view, every flaw gets a mark, and underneath the marking is a quiet need to know what is worth defending.

How the Opinions cross is placed
The Opinions (17/18 | 38/39)
Opinions is your conscious Sun and Correction your conscious Earth, so the habit of forming a view and the habit of fixing what is spoiled both sit on the side you know. The Fighter and Provocation are the Design Sun and Earth, so the Root's push works below awareness and others may feel it before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 17: Opinions
Gate 17, Opinions, is the Personality Sun and the cross's only Ajna Gate, an awareness Center. Its hexagram is Following. It completes Channel 17-62, Acceptance, with Gate 62 in the Throat, a Collective Channel. This cross carries the same name as its Personality Sun Gate. The fixed line is 4, The Personnel Manager: the view is formed with an eye on who should do what, so the opinions are about people and fit as much as ideas.
Gate 18: Correction
Gate 18, Correction, is the Personality Earth and sits in the Spleen, another awareness Center. Its hexagram is Work on What Has Been Spoilt. It completes Channel 18-58, Judgment, with Gate 58 in the Root, a Collective Channel on the Root motor. As the Earth it is the ground under the opinions: the eye that spots what is off. Its fixed line is 4, The Incompetent. That asks for honesty about what you cannot yet do, and gives the correcting a humbler base.
Gate 38: The Fighter
Gate 38, The Fighter, is the Design Sun and sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Opposition. It completes Channel 28-38, Struggle, with Gate 28 in the Spleen, an Individual Channel on the Root motor. Its fixed line is 1, Qualification. The fight is picked, not wild: there is a first question about whether something is worth the struggle. Below awareness, it means others may see your resistance gather before you have decided to push back.
Gate 39: Provocation
Gate 39, Provocation, is the Design Earth and also sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Obstruction. It completes Channel 39-55, Emoting, with Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus, an Individual Channel on the Root and Solar Plexus motors. Its fixed line is 1, Disengagement. The provocation can step back: a first move is to withdraw from a pressure point instead of pressing on it. As the ground under the cross, it gives the whole fixed pattern a way out.
Two awareness Centers on the conscious side
The conscious pair sits in two awareness Centers, the Ajna and the Spleen. That is a mental way of seeing and a bodily way of sensing what is off, working together on the surface of the cross. Gate 17 forms views, and Gate 18 notices what has been spoilt and wants it put right.
Together they make a cross that is always evaluating. Neither Gate is a motor, so the evaluating does not by itself push anything into action. The Channels they complete are Collective ones, which is where a tested opinion is meant to be shared.
Two Root Gates, a pressure Center, below awareness
Gates 38 and 39 are both in the Root, the pressure Center and also a motor. As the Design pair they work below awareness, so the push to resist and provoke is not the part of the cross you notice most about yourself, but it is the part others may feel.
The two Gates sit opposite each other on the wheel, and they do not form a Channel together. Each needs a partner from your own chart: Gate 28 in the Spleen for The Fighter, Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus for Provocation. What the cross supplies is the fighting spirit and its brake.
A fight with a first question and an exit
The Root pair's fixed lines are Qualification and Disengagement. The first is a check before the fight: is this worth it? The second is a step back. Neither is the stance of someone who fights for its own sake, and both are fixed in every chart with this cross.
In practice that can look like a person who opposes things carefully. They ask what is at stake, push once, and withdraw if it is the wrong battle. The conscious side then forms an opinion about what happened, which is how the two halves of the cross meet.
Why the Opinions is a Juxtaposition cross
Opinions is a Juxtaposition cross, which means its pattern is set and does not hand off to another role. The views, the corrections and the quiet resistance underneath all stay in place for life. The job is to keep that pattern honest: to hold opinions that are earned, and to pick fights worth having. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Opinions cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Opinions cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 17.4 The Personnel Manager | Your views come with an eye on people, so you tend to judge who should do what along with what is true. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 18.4 The Incompetent | Your correcting starts from honesty about what you cannot yet do, which keeps it humble and keeps it useful. |
| Design Sun: Gate 38.1 Qualification | Below awareness you check whether a struggle is worth it first, and the resistance builds only when the answer is yes. |
| Design Earth: Gate 39.1 Disengagement | Your provocation can step away, so withdrawing from a pressure point is part of how you handle it. |
Living the Opinions cross
At work
People with Opinions are often valued for judgment: editors, reviewers, managers, critics, quality leads, advisors. The cross suits roles where a clear view of people and process is needed, and where fixing what is wrong is part of the job. It works best when the view is asked for and not simply given.
In relationships
In relationships the cross can make every disagreement feel like a correction, and every correction feel like a fight. The Root's push is quiet and strong. It helps to separate the view from the push: say what you think, then check whether the other person is asking for it before pressing any further.
In decisions
Having a strong view is not a decision. The Ajna can form opinions and the Spleen can sense what is off, but neither tells you what is correct for you.
Make the choice with your Type and your inner Authority, then use the cross to review how it went. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Opinions cross is misread
"Opinions means I am opinionated"
"The Fighter means I look for conflict"
"It is the Left Angle Cross of Upheaval"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 17: What opinion did you form today, and was it asked for?
- Gate 18: What is spoiled around you that you could fix, and what do you honestly not yet know how to do?
- Gate 38: What is the next fight you are considering, and is it worth the struggle?
- Gate 39: Where is the pressure point you could step away from without losing anything?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 17, 18, 38 and 39, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of views and corrections over a Root pair that resists and provokes.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions?
They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 17.4 The Personnel Manager as the Personality Sun, 18.4 The Incompetent as the Personality Earth, 38.1 Qualification as the Design Sun, and 39.1 Disengagement as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.
How much of Opinions is felt as pressure from the Root?
Both Design Gates, 38 and 39, sit in the Root, a pressure Center. The pressure works below awareness, so you may feel it as a general push to resist, and other people may notice it before you do.
Which of the Opinions Channels reach the Throat?
Only Channel 17-62, Acceptance, which joins the Ajna to the Throat. It needs Gate 62 from your own chart. The cross's other Channels run to the Root, the Spleen and the Solar Plexus.
How do Gates 38 and 39 work together as a Design pair?
They are opposite Gates on the wheel and both sit in the Root, but they do not form a Channel with each other. The Fighter supplies resistance with a first check, and Provocation supplies a push with an exit.
Is Opinions about speaking views or about being asked for them?
Both are in the cross. Gate 17 forms views, and its fixed line, The Personnel Manager, looks at people and fit. The cross does not say when to share them, which is a matter for your Type and Authority.
