Juxtaposition Cross of Correction

The Juxtaposition Cross of Correction is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 18, 17, 39 and 38, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of spotting what is broken, forming a view about it, and pushing back, with two Root Gates supplying the pressure.

Simple way to think about it: Correction is the editor with a red pen and a stubborn streak. The editor reads the whole draft, forms an opinion about what is wrong, and then has to decide which fights are worth having before sending it back.

The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (18/17 | 39/38). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

Three Centers hold the four Gates. Gate 18, Correction, is in the Spleen and Gate 17, Opinions, is in the Ajna. Gates 39 and 38, Provocation and The Fighter, both sit in the Root. The conscious pair comes from the Right Angle Cross of Service, and the Design pair comes from the Right Angle Cross of Tension.

Correction is your conscious Sun and Opinions your conscious Earth, so the eye for what is wrong and the habit of forming a view about it are both on the side you can see. Provocation and The Fighter run on the Design side, so the push to challenge and resist can show up as reflex before it feels like a choice.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 18: Correction

Gate 18, Correction, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Spleen. Its hexagram is Work on What Has Been Spoilt, and it completes Channel 18-58 with Gate 58 in the Root, the Channel of Judgment. This cross fixes its fourth line, titled The Incompetent. That is a harsh title, and it points at the part of correcting that goes wrong when the standard is applied to people instead of to the work. Used on the work, it is a sharp eye.

Gate 17: Opinions

Gate 17, Opinions, is the conscious Earth and the cross's only Ajna Gate. Its hexagram is Following. It completes Channel 17-62 with Gate 62 in the Throat, the Channel of Acceptance, whose keynote is an organizational being. The fixed fourth line is The Personnel Manager, so the opinions in this cross lean toward who is suited to what, and how a group should be arranged to work. Opinions here are not idle talk. They come from an Ajna that wants to be heard once the Spleen has spotted a flaw, and they ask to be tested against other people before they harden.

Gate 39: Provocation

Gate 39, Provocation, is the Design Sun and a Root Gate. Its hexagram is Obstruction. It completes Channel 39-55 with Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus, a Channel of moodiness. The fixed first line is Disengagement, so the provoking in this cross often begins by pulling back to see whether the obstruction is real. It is the push of someone who wants to know before acting, which is why it can look like waiting.

Gate 38: The Fighter

Gate 38, The Fighter, is the Design Earth and the second Root Gate. Its hexagram is Opposition. It completes Channel 28-38 with Gate 28 in the Spleen, the Channel of Struggle. The fixed first line is Qualification, so the fighting in this cross starts with asking what is worth fighting for. It is the ground under the whole cross: the stubbornness to keep opposing something once the answer is yes.

Both Design Gates in the Root

The Root is a motor and a pressure Center, and this cross puts two of its Gates there, one as the Design Sun and one as the Design Earth. Both lines, Disengagement and Qualification, are first lines, which ask for foundations before action. The urge to push is built in, and so is the instinct to check before pushing.

Gates 39 and 38 are not a Channel together, so they do not define the Root by themselves. Each looks for a partner in another Center. Whether the pressure is felt as drive or as an itch depends on which of those Channels your chart completes.

An awareness pair that sees and then judges

Gate 18 in the Spleen notices what is out of line, and Gate 17 in the Ajna builds an opinion from it. Both are awareness Centers, and they sit together on the conscious side. The result is a mind that reaches a view quickly and a body that registers what is wrong before the mind has words for it.

Both of their partners are elsewhere: Gate 58 in the Root and Gate 62 in the Throat. So the seeing and the opinion are meant to travel, to the drive below and the voice above. A correction that never leaves your head tends to turn into private criticism.

Collective and Individual in one cross

Gates 18 and 17 belong to the Collective circuit, which is about improving things for many people. Gates 39 and 38 belong to the Individual circuit, where the drive is to do things your own way. The conscious side wants to fix the shared world, while the Design side wants to resist being pushed around.

That is a real tension. The cross is at its best when the Collective eye is aimed at a problem worth solving and the Individual stubbornness is spent on the standard, not on the people around you.

Why the Correction is a Juxtaposition cross

A fixed position means Correction does not mellow into a different role. The eye for what is wrong stays sharp for life, and so does the opposition behind it. The Juxtaposition angle makes the question practical: which problems deserve a lifetime of attention, and which ones you are only correcting out of habit. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Correction cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Correction cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 18.4 The IncompetentYour standard is hard on incompetence, which makes the work better and can make the people around it feel judged.
Personality Earth: Gate 17.4 The Personnel ManagerYour opinions lean toward who suits which job, so you tend to see how a group should be arranged before it does.
Design Sun: Gate 39.1 DisengagementBelow awareness you disengage to test whether an obstruction is real before you decide to push against it.
Design Earth: Gate 38.1 QualificationYour fighting starts with qualifying the cause, and once something clears the bar you hold your ground firmly.

Living the Correction cross

At work

People with Correction are often the quality control a team did not know it needed: editors, auditors, reviewers, organizers, managers who fix a process. It works when the standard is about the work and there is a clear way to hand the finding back. It sours when every flaw becomes a verdict on someone's competence.

In relationships

At home the cross can arrive as a running list of what could be better. Most people hear a correction as a rejection. Say what is working before you say what is not, and notice when you are fighting the person instead of the problem. The Fighter wants a worthwhile opponent, and a partner is not one.

In decisions

Correction can tell you what is wrong with an option. It cannot tell you which option is right for you.

Let your Strategy and your inner Authority make the choice, and use the cross afterward to improve what you chose. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Correction cross is misread

"The Incompetent means I am incompetent"

Gate 18's fourth line title describes the judgment that lands on the work or on people, not a verdict on you. In this cross it is the shadow side of a very good eye.

"The Fighter means I should be fighting all the time"

Gate 38's fixed first line is Qualification, which means checking whether the cause is worth it first. The fight comes after the question.

"This is the same cross as the Left Angle Cross of Upheaval"

Upheaval holds the same four Gates but belongs to the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 Profiles. Correction is the 4/1 version, with all four lines fixed in place.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 18: What are you correcting right now, and does the standard belong to the work or to a person?
  2. Gate 17: Which opinion of yours has not been tested against anyone else's view yet?
  3. Gate 39: Where could you step back and check whether the obstruction is really there?
  4. Gate 38: What is the one thing worth fighting for this year, and what can you let go?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows whether Gate 58, 62, 55 or 28 completes a Channel for you and how the pressure in your Root actually behaves. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Correction

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Correction?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 18, 17, 39 and 38, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of noticing what is spoilt, forming an opinion about it, and resisting what does not meet the standard.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Correction?

They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 18.4 The Incompetent as the Personality Sun, 17.4 The Personnel Manager as the Personality Earth, 39.1 Disengagement as the Design Sun, and 38.1 Qualification as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.

Why does the push in Correction feel automatic?

Mostly from the Root. Gates 39 and 38 both sit there, and the Root is a motor and a pressure Center. They are the Design Gates, so the push often feels automatic rather than chosen.

Which two circuits does Correction mix?

The Collective and the Individual. Gates 18 and 17 are Collective, concerned with the shared world. Gates 39 and 38 are Individual, concerned with doing things on your own terms. The cross lives in the tension between them.

How do Gates 17 and 62 work together in this cross?

Gate 17 sits in the Ajna and can complete Channel 17-62 with Gate 62 in the Throat. If your chart has Gate 62 as well, the opinion gets a voice and a sense of how to organize. Without it, the opinion has no direct line to speech.

Is Correction a critical person's cross?

It can look that way, but the canon titles say more. The Personnel Manager and Qualification point to fitting people to roles and testing a cause before acting. Correction at its best is skilled arrangement, not constant fault-finding.
