Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness
The Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 44, 24, 7 and 13, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of watching: sensing what is coming, reasoning it through alone, then taking the lead and listening within a group.
Simple way to think about it: Alertness is the lookout in the crow's nest. The lookout sees weather long before the deck does and has to call it down in plain words. A lookout nobody listens to is just a person watching the horizon.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (44/24 | 7/13). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Alertness cross on the BodyGraph
Three Centers hold the four Gates. Gate 44 sits in the Spleen and Gate 24 in the Ajna, and both are awareness Centers. Gates 7 and 13 sit side by side in the G Center. The conscious pair, 44 and 24, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of The Four Ways carries; the Design pair, 7 and 13, comes from the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx.

How the Alertness cross is placed
The Alertness (44/24 | 7/13)
Alertness is your conscious Sun and Rationalization your conscious Earth, so the sharp noticing and the explaining that follows it are the part you know well. The Role of the Self in Interaction and The Listener run on the Design side, which is why others may see how you steer and hear a group before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 44: Alertness
Gate 44, Alertness, is the cross's name and its conscious Sun. It sits in the Spleen, an awareness Center, and its hexagram is Coming to Meet. It completes Channel 26-44 with Gate 26 in the Heart, the Channel of Surrender, in the Tribal circuit. The Sun is the part of you that you know, so this is the Gate you recognize first: the sense of what is arriving. Its fourth line, Honesty, is the one every Alertness chart carries, which keeps the noticing plain rather than strategic.
Gate 24: Rationalization
Gate 24, Rationalization, is the conscious Earth, the ground under the alertness. It sits in the Ajna, the other awareness Center in the cross, and its hexagram is The Return. It completes Channel 24-61 with Gate 61 in the Head, the Channel of Awareness, in the Individual circuit. Where Gate 44 senses what is coming, Gate 24 goes back over it and gives it a reason. Its fourth line, The Hermit, is fixed here, so the going back over tends to happen apart from others, before anything is said.
Gate 7: The Role of the Self in Interaction
Gate 7, The Role of the Self in Interaction, is the Design Sun, lived without thinking. It sits in the G Center and its hexagram is The Army. It completes Channel 7-31 with Gate 31 in the Throat, the Channel of The Alpha, in the Collective circuit. Its first line, Authoritarian, is the line every Alertness chart carries, so the Gate's pull toward directing a group arrives in its most direct form. Others often see you take the lead before you have noticed that you did.
Gate 13: The Listener
Gate 13, The Listener, is the Design Earth and Gate 7's opposite in the G Center. Its hexagram is The Fellowship of Man. It completes Channel 13-33 with Gate 33 in the Throat, the Channel of The Prodigal, also in the Collective circuit. It grounds the cross in taking in what other people carry. Its first line, Empathy, is fixed in this cross, so the listening starts from feeling with someone before it judges anyone. That balances Gate 7: one Gate steers the group while the other hears what the group is holding.
Two awareness Centers on the conscious side
Gate 44 is in the Spleen, the Center of instinct, which works in the present tense and speaks once. Gate 24 is in the Ajna, the Center of concepts, opinions and certainty. In this cross both are on the Personality side, so the part of you that senses and the part of you that explains are the two parts you can watch at work.
The order matters. The Spleen gives the first quiet signal, and the Ajna builds the account of it afterward. When the account arrives too early it can talk over the signal; when the signal is ignored the account has nothing true to stand on.
Two opposite Gates in the G Center, both facing the Throat
Gates 7 and 13 are opposites on the wheel and both belong to the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. They do not form a Channel with each other. Each reaches toward the Throat instead: Channel 7-31 through Gate 31 and Channel 13-33 through Gate 33.
So the Design side of Alertness is built to be heard. Steering a group and listening to it are two ends of one habit, and both lead toward speech. Nothing in the cross itself defines either Channel, so they depend on what the rest of your chart supplies.
Three circuits and no motor of its own
The Channels these Gates can complete belong to three circuits at once: the Collective for 7-31 and 13-33, the Individual for 24-61, and the Tribal for 26-44. A cross that touches all three moves between sharing, knowing and belonging.
None of the four Gates sits in a motor Center. The cross notices, reasons and directs, but the energy to act on it has to come from elsewhere in the chart, such as the Heart through Gate 26.
Why the Alertness is a Juxtaposition cross
Alertness does not get to change seats. The Spleen's noticing stays the Sun for life, with the Listener underneath it, and the cross asks for depth in one position rather than range across several. A fixed fate suits a watchman: the work is not to become someone else but to keep watching well. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Alertness cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Alertness cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 44.4 Honesty | Your noticing is plain and direct, and you say what you see arriving without dressing it up as something else. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 24.4 The Hermit | Your reasoning happens at a distance from others, and you come back to people with a thought that is already worked through. |
| Design Sun: Gate 7.1 Authoritarian | Below awareness you step into directing a group, and others may feel you taking charge before you have decided to. |
| Design Earth: Gate 13.1 Empathy | Your listening begins by feeling with the person in front of you, long before you form a view about them. |
Living the Alertness cross
At work
Alertness suits work where early warning has value: operations, safety, editing, coaching, any job where someone has to say that something is shifting before the numbers do. It works best when you are given room to think an observation through alone, and when the person who acts on it is actually listening.
In relationships
People close to you may feel watched, and you may feel unheard. The Spleen speaks once, so a partner who talks over the first quiet signal gets a louder, later version of it. Say the first signal when it comes, in plain words, and give the reply the same careful listening you give everyone else.
In decisions
Noticing is not deciding. The Spleen and the Ajna can read a situation but cannot tell you what is right for you.
Decide through your Type and your inner Authority, then let the cross do what it does well: see what is coming and make sense of it afterward. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Alertness cross is misread
"Alertness means I am anxious"
"It is the Left Angle Cross of Incarnation"
"The Listener means I should stay quiet"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 44: What did you sense arriving this week that you have not yet said out loud?
- Gate 24: Which explanation are you still polishing alone, and who could hear the rough version?
- Gate 7: Where did you step into charge recently without being asked, and how did it land?
- Gate 13: Whose situation did you feel from the inside lately, and did they know?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 44, 24, 7 and 13, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of watching what is coming, reasoning it through, and then directing and listening within a group.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Alertness?
The 4/1 Profile fixes them: 44.4 Honesty as the Personality Sun, 24.4 The Hermit as the Personality Earth, 7.1 Authoritarian as the Design Sun, and 13.1 Empathy as the Design Earth. Every chart with this cross carries all four.
Which Centers do the four Gates of Alertness sit in?
Gate 44 is in the Spleen, Gate 24 in the Ajna, and Gates 7 and 13 in the G Center. The Spleen and the Ajna are awareness Centers, and none of the four is in a motor Center.
What moves Alertness if none of its Gates is in a motor Center?
The energy comes from the rest of your chart. Gate 44 can complete Channel 26-44 with Gate 26, which sits in the Heart, a motor, but that depends on your own design and not on the cross.
Do Gates 7 and 13 form a Channel together?
No. They are opposite Gates in the G Center. Gate 7 completes Channel 7-31 with Gate 31, and Gate 13 completes Channel 13-33 with Gate 33, and both of those partners are in the Throat.
Are Gates 44 and 24 opposites on the wheel?
Yes. A Sun and its Earth are always opposite Gates, so Gate 44 as the Personality Sun puts Gate 24 beneath it as the Personality Earth. On the Design side, Gate 7 and Gate 13 are opposites in the same way.
