Left Angle Cross of Separation
The Left Angle Cross of Separation is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 35, 5, 22 and 47. It is about learning your own timing and openness while the world changes around you: new experience, a steady rhythm, grace and clear understanding, all worked out through other people.
Simple way to think about it: Picture someone standing on a platform while trains come and go. Each one carries different people, and the person on the platform learns something from every arrival without leaving. Separation is that kind of watching and joining: you stay in your own rhythm and let the world's changes teach you what matters.

The two rotations of the Separation cross
Find the rotation whose first number matches your Personality Sun. The quarter it sits in gives the rotation its number, 1 or 2.
The Separation 1 (35/5 | 22/47)
With Change as your conscious Sun, you are here for experience: you feel pulled to try what is new, and Fixed Rhythms, your conscious Earth, keeps asking for a steady pace underneath. On the Design side, Openness is the Sun and Realization the Earth, so your charm and your slow understanding work below awareness and show up in how people react to you.
The Separation 2 (5/35 | 47/22)
With Fixed Rhythms as your conscious Sun, timing comes first: you sense that things go best at a particular pace and cannot be hurried. Change, the conscious Earth, makes sure the pace keeps moving. On the Design side, Realization is the Sun and Openness the Earth, so understanding builds in the background while your openness is what others meet first.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 35: Change
As a Throat Gate, Gate 35, Change, gives the cross a voice. Its hexagram is Progress. It completes Channel 35-36 with Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, the Channel of Transitoriness, keynoted as a jack of all trades. Its lines run from Humility to Rectification, through Creative block, Collaboration, Hunger and Altruism. As a Sun it makes your purpose the question of what you will try and what it teaches. As an Earth it keeps your steady rhythm from hardening into routine.
Gate 5: Fixed Rhythms
Fixed Rhythms, Gate 5, is rooted in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Its hexagram is Waiting. It completes Channel 5-15 with Gate 15 in the G Center, the Channel of Rhythm, keynoted as being in the flow. Its lines run from Perseverance and Inner peace through Compulsiveness and The Hunter to Joy and Yielding. As a Sun it makes your purpose a matter of timing. As an Earth it grounds your appetite for change in a pace you can keep.
Gate 22: Openness
Gate 22, Openness, sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves. Its hexagram is Grace. It completes Channel 12-22 with Gate 12 in the Throat, the Channel of Openness, keynoted as a social being. Its lines run from Second class ticket and Charm school through The Enchanter to Sensitivity, Directness and Maturity. In this cross it sits on the Design side in both rotations, so the grace and mood others sense in you arrive before you decide to show them.
Gate 47: Realization
Gate 47, Realization, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts and certainty. Its hexagram is Oppression. It completes Channel 47-64 with Gate 64 in the Head, the Channel of Abstraction. Taking stock and Ambition open its lines, Self-oppression and Repression fill the middle, and The Saint and Futility close them. It is on the Design side in both rotations: the mind works through experience in the background, and a sense of what it all meant tends to arrive late and all at once.
Two ends of two Manifested Channels
Two of the Channels this cross can complete are Manifested ones, which join a motor straight to the Throat: 12-22 and 35-36. The cross holds one end of each. Gate 35 is the Throat end of Channel 35-36, and Gate 22 is the Solar Plexus end of Channel 12-22.
The other ends are not in the cross. Channel 35-36 needs Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, and Channel 12-22 needs Gate 12 in the Throat. If you or another person supplies them, emotional energy has a direct road to speech. Without them, the voice of Gate 35 and the feeling of Gate 22 sit in the same cross without a connection between them, which is why the people you meet matter so much here.
Three Collective Gates and one Individual
Gates 5, 35 and 47 all belong to Collective Channels: Rhythm, Transitoriness and Abstraction. Gate 22 belongs to an Individual one, Openness. So three quarters of this cross faces outward, toward what can be shared and learned from many people, and one quarter is about how a single person shows up in that crowd.
That balance suits a Left Angle purpose. Most of what the cross asks you to do is collect: new experience, a rhythm you test against others, abstract ideas that need other minds to be useful. The one Individual Gate, Openness, is the part that is yours alone, and it is also the one that sits on the Design side where others often see it first.
What the four hexagram names say together
Read in order, the hexagrams of the four Gates tell a small story: Progress, Waiting, Grace and Oppression. Progress is the urge to move on, Waiting is the discipline to let the moment arrive, Grace is how you carry yourself between them, and Oppression is what a mind feels when it has not yet understood.
You do not have to live all four at full force. But the cross tends to cycle through them, and noticing which one you are in helps. Pushing during Waiting, or forcing charm during Oppression, is the usual way the cross goes wrong. Letting each stage run, with people around you who understand it, is the usual way it goes right.
Why the Separation is a Left Angle cross
A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Separation that means your timing, your openness and your understanding are all shaped by those around you. The name does not describe isolation. It describes learning your own rhythm by standing apart from the crowd and moving with it in turn. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.
Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross
Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 35.5 means Gate 35, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Separation cross.
Separation 1: Personality Sun in Gate 35, Change
| 35.1 Humility | You take on new experience with modesty, and your willingness to be a beginner is what lets you keep changing. |
|---|---|
| 35.2 Creative block | You hit stretches where nothing new will come, and the cross asks you to rest in them, not force it. |
| 35.3 Collaboration | You change most when working alongside others, and your progress is shared rather than solitary. |
| 35.4 Hunger | You are hungry for new experience, and the cross asks you to tell real appetite from restlessness. |
| 35.5 Altruism | Others expect your changes to benefit them, and your progress is tested by whether it does. |
| 35.6 Rectification | You come to see what needed correcting along the way, and you fix it with patience instead of blame. |
Separation 2: Personality Sun in Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms
| 5.1 Perseverance | You hold to your rhythm through slow stretches, and your persistence shows others that waiting is not stalling. |
|---|---|
| 5.2 Inner peace | You find your rhythm in calm, and when you are at ease the people around you settle into theirs. |
| 5.3 Compulsiveness | You can force a rhythm by habit alone, and the cross asks you to tell routine from true timing. |
| 5.4 The Hunter | You watch for the right moment to move, and others learn from how patiently you wait for it. |
| 5.5 Joy | You find the right rhythm through enjoyment, and your visible ease pulls others toward the pattern that works. |
| 5.6 Yielding | You learn to give way to a rhythm larger than your own, and others find that restful to be near. |
Living the Separation cross
At work
People with this cross often do well in work that changes shape: projects that start, move and end, with different people each time. The risk is being pulled in several directions at once. Work goes best when you wait for the right opening, say yes to what feels right in your gut, and let each stage of a project finish before the next begins.
In relationships
In relationships the cross is about pace. You may need a partner who does not mind that your interest moves, and who can wait while your understanding catches up. Because your openness shows before your reasons do, it helps to say out loud what is happening. Others cannot always tell the difference between calm and distance.
In decisions
Separation gives your life a theme, not a rule for each choice. Waiting is built into it, and so is the urge to move on. Neither is the answer. Let your Type and Authority tell you when the moment has come, and treat the other pull as information.
Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let your timing follow from choices that were truly yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Separation cross is misread
"Separation means I am meant to be alone"
"Having Gate 35 and Gate 22 means I have a direct line from feeling to speech"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 35: What new experience are you drawn to right now, and what do you hope it will teach you?
- Gate 5: Where are you rushing something that has its own timing, and what would waiting look like?
- Gate 22: When did you last let someone see how you really felt, without explaining it first?
- Gate 47: What from your recent experience still does not make sense, and what would it take for it to?

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Separation
What is the Left Angle Cross of Separation?
It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 35, 5, 22 and 47. Its theme is finding your own timing and openness while experience changes around you, worked out through relationships.
Which Separation rotation do I have?
Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 35/5 | 22/47 is Separation 1, with Change as your Personality Sun. 5/35 | 47/22 is Separation 2, with Fixed Rhythms as your Personality Sun.
Does the cross make me a Manifestor?
No. Gates 35 and 22 are one end of two Manifested Channels, but each needs its partner Gate, 36 or 12, before it exists. Your Type comes from your whole chart, not from the cross.
How do Waiting and Progress sit together in Separation?
Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, carries the hexagram Waiting and sits in the Sacral. Gate 35, Change, carries Progress and sits in the Throat. They are opposites and the conscious pair, so a rhythm that waits is set against a voice that wants to move on.
Which circuits does Separation draw on?
Two. Gates 35, 5 and 47 complete Collective Channels, and Gate 22 completes an Individual one. No Tribal Channel is among the four, so the cross leans toward what is shared with many people.
Why does Gate 47 pair Realization with the hexagram Oppression?
Gate 47 is named Realization and its hexagram is Oppression. In Separation it is the Ajna Gate on the Design side in both rotations, beside Gate 22, Openness, whose hexagram is Grace. A mind that works things out under pressure is held next to openness and grace.
