Juxtaposition Cross of Experience

The Juxtaposition Cross of Experience is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 35, 5, 22 and 47, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path led by the voice: a Throat Sun that wants to try things, with rhythm, grace and a sorting mind behind it.

Simple way to think about it: Experience is a traveler's notebook. The trip comes first and the writing comes second, and the entries only start to mean something once the pages have been turned back.

Change is your conscious Sun and Fixed Rhythms your conscious Earth, so the voice and the body's timing are the parts you can see in yourself. Openness and Realization run on the Design side. Feeling and thinking are doing work here that you may only recognize afterward.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 35: Change

Gate 35, Change, is the conscious Sun and the cross's only Throat Gate, so the voice leads. Its hexagram is Progress. It completes Channel 35-36, Transitoriness, with Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, a manifesting Channel keynoted as a Jack of All Trades. Its fourth line, Hunger, is fixed here, so the wish to try the next thing never fully goes away. It is the line that keeps the cross moving.

Gate 5: Fixed Rhythms

Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, is the conscious Earth and sits in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Its hexagram is Waiting. It completes Channel 5-15, Rhythm, with Gate 15 in the G Center, keynoted as being in the flow. Its fourth line, The Hunter, is fixed in this cross. As the Earth, it is the steady ground under the restless Sun: a body that sets its own pace, however much the voice wants to move.

Gate 22: Openness

Gate 22, Openness, is the Design Sun and the cross's Solar Plexus Gate. Its hexagram is Grace. It completes Channel 12-22, Openness, with Gate 12 in the Throat, another manifesting Channel, keynoted as a social being. Its first line, Second class ticket, is fixed here: grace that starts from an unglamorous seat. Because it is the Design Sun, openness works through you before you decide to offer it. Others can feel it as warmth or as mood, and often notice it well before you do, since the Solar Plexus is a Center of emotions and waves.

Gate 47: Realization

Gate 47, Realization, is the Design Earth and sits in the Ajna. Its hexagram is Oppression, the pressure to find some sense in what has happened. It completes Channel 47-64, Abstraction, with Gate 64 in the Head. Its first line, Taking stock, is fixed here. The Earth of the cross is the mind going back over experience once it is lived, adding up what the voice and the body have already done.

A Throat Gate in the conscious Sun

The Throat is where everything that leaves you passes through, and Gate 35 is the only Gate of this cross there. Since it is the Personality Sun, the voice is the most visible thing about you. You are likely to be known for talking about what you have tried, or for asking others what they have tried.

The hexagram is Progress and the fixed fourth line is Hunger, so the voice is hungry for new ground. The risk is that talking about the next thing replaces doing it. The cross says that the trying is the point, and the telling comes after.

Sacral and Solar Plexus on opposite sides

Two Gates here sit in motors. The Sacral is the largest motor, renewing daily, and the Solar Plexus is both a motor and an awareness Center. Gate 5 puts the Sacral on the conscious side, and Gate 22 puts the Solar Plexus on the Design side.

So your pace is something you can feel, and your mood is something others may feel first. The cross does not say that either motor is defined in your chart. It says that both are in play, and which one is steady depends on the Channels you actually have.

Two manifesting Channels, both ending at the Solar Plexus

Gate 35 can complete Channel 35-36 with the Solar Plexus. Gate 22 can complete Channel 12-22 with the Throat. Both are manifesting Channels, joining a motor to the voice. Gate 35 is the conscious Sun and Gate 22 is the Design Sun, so one of these doors is on the side you know and the other is on the side you live without noticing.

If either Channel is yours, what you feel can be said or done. If neither is, the cross still describes the pull, and the way through is another person or another part of your chart.

Why the Experience is a Juxtaposition cross

Experience has one way in, and it never changes: the voice leads, the body keeps time and the mind adds it up later. A fixed fate does not make this narrow. It makes it reliable, so that the same Hunger and the same Taking stock turn up again whatever the setting. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Experience cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Experience cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 35.4 HungerYour voice stays hungry for the next thing, and you tend to try something before you can explain why.
Personality Earth: Gate 5.4 The HunterYour body sets its own pace and hunts for what fits, however much your voice wants to hurry it.
Design Sun: Gate 22.1 Second class ticketBelow awareness your openness starts from a modest seat, so people meet you before you have made any claim.
Design Earth: Gate 47.1 Taking stockYour mind takes stock first, counting what you have and what you have lived before it adds more.

Living the Experience cross

At work

People with Experience often do their best work in roles that allow them to try, report back and try again: testing, sales, teaching, consulting, creative fields with a lot of iteration. They are the ones who have actually done the thing, and they tell it well. A job that never lets them try new things can feel like a closed door. Give them room to move, and keep a notebook so the lessons are not lost.

In relationships

Close to home, the voice talks about what happened and the Solar Plexus feels what is underneath. Both matter. Tell your partner what you tried today, and notice what you felt while trying it. The modest first line of Gate 22 means you may under-claim your own effort, so say it plainly.

In decisions

The Throat speaks and the Ajna reflects, but neither is an Authority. What you say about a choice is not the choice.

Choose by your Type and inner Authority, then use the cross to learn from what the choice teaches you. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Experience cross is misread

"Experience means I need to have done everything first"

The fixed lines are Hunger, The Hunter, Second class ticket and Taking stock. They describe an appetite and a habit of reviewing, not a requirement to be experienced before acting.

"The Throat Sun means I must be a speaker"

Gate 35 is the Throat Gate of this cross, but a Gate is not a Channel. Whether your voice is wired to a motor depends on Channels such as 35-36 or 12-22 being complete in your chart.

"It is the same as the Left Angle Cross of Separation"

The four Gates are the same. The Profile is not. Experience comes only with 4/1 and fixes all four lines, while Separation is lived with 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 or 6/3 and worked out through other people.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 35: What are you hungry to try that you have only talked about so far?
  2. Gate 5: Where is your own pace different from the pace you are being asked to keep?
  3. Gate 22: What would it look like to offer something from the modest seat, with no claim attached?
  4. Gate 47: What did you live through this year that you have not yet stopped to add up?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows how your four fixed lines work with your Type, Authority and defined Channels, and whether Gate 36, Gate 12 or Gate 15 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Experience

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Experience?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 35, 5, 22 and 47, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path led by a Throat Sun, with the Sacral, the Solar Plexus and the Ajna each holding one Gate.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Experience?

They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 35.4 Hunger as the Personality Sun, 5.4 The Hunter as the Personality Earth, 22.1 Second class ticket as the Design Sun, and 47.1 Taking stock as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.

Will Experience decide my Type or Authority?

No. None of its four Gates forms a Channel with another Gate of the cross, so the cross itself defines no Center. Your Type and Authority come from the Channels your whole chart completes.

What makes the two Throat Channels in Experience manifesting?

Both join the Solar Plexus motor to the Throat. Gate 35 sits in the Throat and completes Channel 35-36 with Gate 36. Gate 22 sits in the Solar Plexus and completes Channel 12-22 with Gate 12 in the Throat.

Is Experience part of the Civilization quarter?

Yes. Gate 35, the Personality Sun, belongs to the Civilization quarter, whose theme in the canon is purpose fulfilled through form. The quarter follows the Personality Sun Gate.

What part of Experience does the thinking?

Through Gate 47 in the Ajna, the Design Earth. Its fixed first line is Taking stock. It completes Channel 47-64, Abstraction, with Gate 64 in the Head, which is how this cross can turn what it lives into an idea.
