Left Angle Cross of Education

The Left Angle Cross of Education is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 12, 11, 25 and 46. It is about learning and teaching through other people: a careful voice, a mind full of ideas, and a sense of self that is found and tested in company rather than alone.

Simple way to think about it: Think of the tutor who learns a subject best by explaining it to someone who keeps asking why. The answers get clearer in the telling, and the student shapes the lesson as much as the tutor does. Education works like that: what you know only becomes yours when somebody else is listening.

Match them to the rotations below to see which of the two you carry. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

The Education cross on the BodyGraph

The four Gates sit in only three Centers: Gate 12 in the Throat, Gate 11 in the Ajna, and both Gates 25 and 46 in the G Center. The conscious pair, 12 and 11, is also a pair in the Right Angle Cross of Eden, and the Design pair, 25 and 46, is also a pair in the Right Angle Cross of The Vessel of Love. Education takes one pair from each and turns both toward other people.

With Caution as your conscious Sun, the voice leads: you are here to learn when and how to say things, and Ideas, the conscious Earth, supplies the thinking behind the words. The Spirit of the Self and The Determination of the Self work on the Design side, so your sense of direction forms below awareness. With Ideas as your conscious Sun, the mind leads: you notice concepts first and then look for the right moment to speak them, with Caution as your conscious Earth holding the door. This rotation sits in the quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 12: Caution

Gate 12, Caution, is a Throat Gate, and its hexagram is Standstill. It is a voice that holds still before it speaks. It completes Channel 12-22 with Gate 22 in the Solar Plexus, named Openness, and that is a manifesting Channel, because the Solar Plexus is a motor that connects to the Throat. Its lines run from The Monk to Metamorphosis. As a Sun it makes your purpose a question of timing: what is worth saying, and when. As an Earth it keeps the ideas in check.

Gate 11: Ideas

Gate 11, Ideas, sits in the Ajna, the Center of concepts, opinions and certainty. Its hexagram is Peace. It completes Channel 11-56 with Gate 56 in the Throat, named Curiosity, a Channel of the Collective circuit. Its lines run from Attunement to Adaptability and include The Teacher. As a Sun it makes your purpose the gathering and sharing of ideas. As an Earth it keeps the voice of the cross supplied with something to say.

Gate 25: The Spirit of the Self

Gate 25, The Spirit of the Self, sits in the G Center, the Center of identity, direction and love. Its hexagram is Innocence. It completes Channel 25-51 with Gate 51 in the Heart, named Initiation, a Channel of the Individual circuit. Its lines begin with Selflessness and end with Ignorance. In this cross it is on the Design side in both rotations, so a trusting, open sense of self works in the background and others may notice it first.

Gate 46: The Determination of the Self

Gate 46, The Determination of the Self, also sits in the G Center. Its hexagram is Pushing Upward. It completes Channel 29-46 with Gate 29 in the Sacral, named Discovery, a Channel of the Collective circuit. Its lines run from Being discovered to Integrity, with Projection and Impact in the middle. Like Gate 25 it is on the Design side in both rotations. Together the two Gates set the self and its direction side by side, and other people are where both get tested.

A Throat Gate named Caution

Gate 12 is the only Gate of this cross in the Throat, and its name tells you how the cross wants to use it. Standstill is its hexagram. The voice here is not meant to fill every silence. It is meant to know when a pause is the right answer and when a pause has gone on too long.

The Channel it completes, 12-22, is called Openness, and the Solar Plexus on the other end is a motor. That makes it a manifesting Channel: energy that can travel from a motor straight out through the Throat. The cross itself holds only Gate 12, so the other half has to come from somewhere else. When another person carries Gate 22, the two of you can complete the Channel between you, and what Caution holds back can come out with real force. That is how a Left Angle cross tends to work: the missing piece is across the table.

Four Gates and not one motor among them

None of the four Gates sits in a motor Center. Ajna, G and Throat are all places of thinking, identity and expression, and the Ajna is the only awareness Center among them. So the cross itself does not carry drive. It carries ideas, a sense of direction and a way of speaking.

The drive turns up in the partners. Gate 22 sits in the Solar Plexus, Gate 51 in the Heart and Gate 29 in the Sacral, and all three are motors. The Channels that join them to this cross are the places where thought and identity pick up fuel. If those Gates are missing from your chart, ideas can feel plentiful and slow to move. If another person has them, you may notice that being around that person is when your lessons finally get going.

Self and direction, side by side in the G Center

Gates 25 and 46 are opposites on the wheel, and here they share one Center. The Spirit of the Self is about an open, innocent kind of identity. The Determination of the Self is about pushing upward with integrity. In both rotations they are on the Design side, so they do their work behind your back, and it is usually other people who point out what they have seen in you.

They also reach into two different circuits. The Channel 25-51 belongs to the Individual circuit, which is about being yourself. The Channel 29-46 belongs to the Collective circuit, which is about what people share. A cross with a foot in both has a built-in question: where does your own way of seeing end, and where does the common lesson begin? Education is what you find out by testing one against the other with real people.

Why the Education is a Left Angle cross

A Left Angle cross is transpersonal: the purpose is worked out through other people, and your life tends to be shaped by who you meet. For Education the fit is close, because learning is rarely solitary. What you take in and what you pass on both depend on the teachers, students and companions who turn up. The Left Angle goes with four Profiles: 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3. With one of these, these four Gates make the Left Angle cross; with a 4/1 Profile the same Gates make a Juxtaposition cross instead.

Your Sun line: how the line colors this cross

Your Personality Sun has a line as well as a Gate: the number after the dot. 12.5 means Gate 12, Line 5. Open your rotation below and find your line. The line title comes from the Rave I Ching; the sentence after it is how that line tends to color the Education cross.

Education 1: Personality Sun in Gate 12, Caution
12.1 The MonkYou hold back until you are sure, and that stillness gives your words their weight when you do speak.
12.2 PurificationYou clear away what is not needed in your speech, and the plain version is the one people remember.
12.3 ConfessionYou are honest about your own mistakes, and that candor teaches others more than polish would.
12.4 The ProphetYou can see where a pattern is heading, and the cross asks you to say so only when it will be heard.
12.5 The PragmatistYou are practical about what can be said and what cannot, and people trust you to choose well.
12.6 MetamorphosisYour voice changes over a lifetime, and each version of it teaches something the earlier ones could not.
Education 2: Personality Sun in Gate 11, Ideas
11.1 AttunementYou tune in to a subject before you take it on, and your ideas start from listening.
11.2 RigourYou are strict with yourself about the quality of an idea, and the cross asks you to share it before it is perfect.
11.3 The RealistYou test ideas against what is real, and you are willing to say which ones do not hold up.
11.4 The TeacherYou learn by teaching and often find your own ideas clear only after you have explained them to someone.
11.5 The PhilanthropistYour ideas are meant to be useful to a wider group, and others may expect you to give them freely.
11.6 AdaptabilityYou adjust your ideas as the world changes, and that flexibility is how they stay worth listening to.

Living the Education cross

At work

People with this cross often become the one who explains: the colleague who writes the guide, the trainer, the friend others text when they cannot make sense of something. Work goes best when you can learn in the open and share what you learn as you go. Be wary of waiting until you feel fully qualified. Gate 12 may hold you back longer than the room needs.

In relationships

In relationships this cross works through the exchange. You find out who you are by how you talk with the people closest to you, and they find out things about themselves by talking with you. Notice whether the conversation runs both ways. A partner who only listens, or only teaches, leaves half of the cross unused.

In decisions

Education does not hand you an answer for each choice. It gives your life a theme: asking, learning and sharing. When a decision is hard, it can help to explain it aloud to someone you trust, because the explaining often shows you what you already know.

Answer with your Type and your inner Authority, and let what you teach grow out of choices that were really yours. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Education cross is misread

"Education means I am meant to be a teacher"

The cross names a theme of learning and sharing, not a job title. Gate 11 has a line called The Teacher, but the cross shows up in how you exchange ideas with other people, in any setting.

"Having this cross means my Throat is defined"

Gate 12 is in the Throat, but a single Gate does not define a Center. The cross only lists the Gates; whether the Throat is defined depends on the full chart.

"A Left Angle cross means I cannot work things out alone"

The cross runs through other people, but you still think your own thoughts. Other people are where those thoughts get tested and put to use.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 12: What have you been holding back lately, and is it caution or just habit?
  2. Gate 11: Which idea have you gone over many times without telling anyone, and who could you try it on?
  3. Gate 25: When did you last act on pure trust in yourself, and what happened?
  4. Gate 46: Who has noticed something in you that you had not noticed yourself?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is written from your exact chart, so it shows which Education rotation you carry, your Sun line, and whether Gate 22, 56, 51 or 29 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Left Angle Cross of Education

What is the Left Angle Cross of Education?

It is a Left Angle Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 12, 11, 25 and 46. Its theme is learning and sharing ideas, a sense of self tested in company, worked out through other people rather than alone.

Which Education rotation do I have?

Read the four numbers after the cross name on your chart. 12/11 | 25/46 is Education 1, with Caution as your Personality Sun. 11/12 | 46/25 is Education 2, with Ideas as your Personality Sun.

What does a Throat Gate called Caution do in a cross named Education?

Gate 12, Caution, is the one Throat Gate in Education, and its hexagram is Standstill. Its lines include The Monk, The Prophet and The Pragmatist. It can complete Channel 12-22 with the Solar Plexus, a manifesting Channel, so the cross has a single voice Gate and it is a careful one.

Which lines of Gate 11 are named for people?

Lines 3, 4 and 5 of Gate 11, Ideas, are The Realist, The Teacher and The Philanthropist. The other three are Attunement, Rigour and Adaptability. In Education the Ajna Gate is the thinking side of the cross, so the middle lines read as roles you take for others and the outer lines as how you work.

Why does Education begin with the Throat in one rotation and the Ajna in the other?

Rotation 1 has Gate 12 as the Personality Sun, in the Throat, and rotation 2 has Gate 11, in the Ajna. The same four Gates are in play, but the conscious focus shifts from the voice to the mind.

Why does Gate 25 run from Selflessness to Ignorance?

Gate 25, The Spirit of the Self, has Selflessness as line 1 and Ignorance as line 6. The Existentialist, Sensibility, Survival and Recuperation sit between them. Your line of this Gate marks which stretch of that path you stand on, and a Left Angle cross like Education asks you to find it through the people you meet.
