Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking
The Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 61, 62, 50 and 3, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path that begins in the pressure to know and runs through research, values and a start, then out into words.
Simple way to think about it: Thinking is a lighthouse keeper's night shift. Nothing is called across the water. The keeper watches, logs what the sea is doing, and sends out one clear signal only when there is something worth showing.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (61/62 | 50/3). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Thinking cross on the BodyGraph
The Head, the Throat, the Spleen and the Sacral each hold one of the four Gates. Gate 61 in the Head takes the Personality Sun, which puts the urge to understand in the lead. Gates 61 and 62 are also the conscious pair of the Right Angle Cross of Maya, and Gates 50 and 3, the Design pair here, belong to the Right Angle Cross of Laws.

How the Thinking cross is placed
The Thinking (61/62 | 50/3)
On the conscious side, Gate 61, Mystery, is the Sun and Gate 62, Details, the Earth: a question in front and careful wording beneath it. On the Design side, Gate 50, Values, is the Sun and Gate 3, Ordering, the Earth, so what you hold dear and how things get going are settled before you think about them.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 61: Mystery
Gate 61, Mystery, takes the Personality Sun and is the one Head Gate in the cross. Its hexagram is Inner Truth. Alongside Gate 24 in the Ajna it forms Channel 24-61, Awareness, an Individual Channel. In the Head, a pressure Center, the Sun position becomes a steady push to understand what lies behind things. Its fixed line is 4, Research: the push is met by looking into the matter step by step, which is how pressure gets worked instead of obeyed.
Gate 62: Details
Gate 62, Details, is the Personality Earth and the cross's Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Preponderance of the Small. With Gate 17 in the Ajna it makes Channel 17-62, Acceptance, a Collective Channel that reaches the Throat. The fixed line is 4, Asceticism. In the Earth seat it works as the ground beneath the questioning: a habit of trimming speech down, so that when the mystery is finally put into words, nothing unnecessary comes along with it.
Gate 50: Values
Gate 50, Values, is the Design Sun and sits in the Spleen, an awareness Center. Its hexagram is The Cauldron. Paired with Gate 27 in the Sacral, it makes Channel 27-50, Preservation, a Tribal Channel. The fixed line is 1, The Immigrant: values form by landing somewhere unfamiliar and learning what is expected there. Because this is the Design Sun, your sense of what deserves keeping is formed before reasoning gets involved.
Gate 3: Ordering
Gate 3, Ordering, is the Design Earth and sits in the Sacral. Its hexagram is Difficulty at the Beginning. With Gate 60 in the Root it makes Channel 3-60, Mutation, an Individual format energy Channel between the Sacral and Root motors. The fixed line is 1, Synthesis: a beginning comes from pulling scattered pieces into one. As the base of the cross, it gives the questions above it something to start from.
Why the question comes before the answer
With the Head Gate in the Sun, the thing you identify with is a question, not a conclusion. A Head Gate pushes without deciding, so the pressure to know can feel constant and still never hand you the answer by itself.
Research, line 4, gives that pressure a method. A small read, a test, a conversation with someone who has looked before: each step lets the question loosen a little, and the cross seems to ask for exactly that pace.
The Spleen and the newcomer's eye
The Spleen is an awareness Center, and Gate 50 sits there as the Design Sun. That means a feel for what is worth keeping, present before any argument for it. You tend to sense that a rule, a habit or a tradition is sound or hollow without being able to say why at first.
The Immigrant adds the outsider's angle. Each new setting has to be read from scratch, and the values you carry out of it are the ones that held up when you tested them against that place.
The Sacral holds the Earth
Gate 3 is the cross's Sacral Gate, and it takes the Design Earth, the base of the whole arrangement. The Channel it belongs to, Mutation, joins the Sacral to the Root, so the force to begin would come from the body's own motors. Whether Gate 60 is present to finish that Channel is a matter for your chart.
The shape is this: questions on top, conscious and restless, and the only motor at the bottom, out of sight. Pushing from the top rarely starts anything. The cross seems to work when the thinking is allowed to settle and a beginning can rise from underneath.
Why the Thinking is a Juxtaposition cross
Nothing in this cross rotates into a different role. The Head Gate keeps the Sun, the same four lines arrive with every chart, and the questions you carry stay on top. Growth here is a matter of skill: learning which questions to take to the body, which to the voice, and which to leave open for a while. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Thinking cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Thinking cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 61.4 Research | Questions are met with study, taken one measured step at a time, in place of hoping the answer will volunteer itself. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 62.4 Asceticism | Your words are pared back to what is needed, so little is said once you have thought, and little of it can be disputed. |
| Design Sun: Gate 50.1 The Immigrant | What you value was formed by arriving somewhere unfamiliar and discovering what the people there depend on. |
| Design Earth: Gate 3.1 Synthesis | Outside awareness you begin things by gathering loose fragments into one piece you can build on. |
Living the Thinking cross
At work
Research, strategy, science, editing and long-form analysis tend to suit this cross, along with any role where a good question counts for more than a quick reply. Space to look properly matters. Being pushed to a conclusion before the looking is done is where it most often goes wrong.
In relationships
Others may take your quiet for distance when you are actually mid-thought. A short word such as "I am still working it out, and I will tell you when it has a shape" turns the silence into something they can wait through.
In decisions
Mulling a choice for weeks is not the same as making it. The Head can raise the question and the Throat can phrase it, yet neither can say what is right for you.
Decide with your Type and inner Authority, and let research check the details you will act on. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Thinking cross is misread
"Thinking means I overthink everything"
"Thinking is Detail under a new label"
"It must be the Left Angle Cross of Obscuration"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 61: What do you most want to understand right now, and what is the next small step in looking into it?
- Gate 62: What could you leave out of what you are about to say?
- Gate 50: What did you absorb from a place you moved into that you now count as your own value?
- Gate 3: What are you holding in pieces that you could begin to bring together?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 61, 62, 50 and 3, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path that begins with the pressure to know and moves through research, worth and a start.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking?
The 4/1 Profile fixes them: 61.4 Research on the Personality Sun, 62.4 Asceticism on the Personality Earth, 50.1 The Immigrant on the Design Sun, and 3.1 Synthesis on the Design Earth. Every chart with this cross carries all four.
Does Thinking mean I think more than other people?
Not on its own. Gate 61 in the Head is the Sun, so the urge to understand sits at the center of the cross, but a Head Gate is pressure and not a measure of intelligence. What the cross fixes is where the questioning is placed.
Which Gate in Thinking gets things started, and from where?
Gate 3, Ordering, the Design Earth, in the Sacral. Its fixed line is Synthesis, so beginnings come from gathering scattered pieces together. It works below awareness, and Channel 3-60 only exists if Gate 60 is also in your chart.
How does Thinking carry three circuits?
Its Gates lead to Individual Channels through 61 and 3, a Collective Channel through 62, and a Tribal Channel through 50. The cross itself never completes a Channel alone, so which circuits you actually have depends on your chart.
Where does the Research line sit in Thinking?
Research is line 4 of Gate 61, and Gate 61 is the Personality Sun. It is the most central position of the cross and is the same in every chart that carries it, with Asceticism as the Earth line beside it.
