Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation
The Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 60, 56, 28 and 27, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path that works within limits: using what is at hand, telling stories about it, and caring for what matters.
Simple way to think about it: Limitation is the cook who makes dinner from whatever is in the cupboard. The walls of the pantry are real, and so is the meal that comes out of them, because a short list of ingredients is what forces a person to get inventive.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (60/56 | 28/27). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.
The Limitation cross on the BodyGraph
Four Centers hold the four Gates, one each. Gate 60 is in the Root, Gate 56 in the Throat, Gate 28 in the Spleen and Gate 27 in the Sacral. The conscious pair, 56 and 60, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of Laws carries. The Design pair, 27 and 28, comes from the Right Angle Cross of The Unexpected.

How the Limitation cross is placed
The Limitation (60/56 | 28/27)
Acceptance is your conscious Sun and Stimulation your conscious Earth, so the Root and the Throat are the two Centers you know best. The Game Player and Caring run on the Design side, which is why others may see a readiness to take a risk and a protective streak in you before you do.
The four Gates in plain language
Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.
Gate 60: Acceptance
Gate 60, Acceptance, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Root. Its hexagram is Limitation. It completes Channel 3-60, Mutation, with Gate 3 in the Sacral, a Channel of the Individual circuit. Its lines run from Acceptance and Decisiveness to Leadership and Rigidity. The fourth, Resourcefulness, is fixed in this cross, so acceptance of what is limited comes with the habit of finding a way around it. This Gate is the source of the cross's pressure, and it asks to be used rather than resisted.
Gate 56: Stimulation
Gate 56, Stimulation, is the conscious Earth and sits in the Throat. Its hexagram is The Wanderer. It completes Channel 11-56, Curiosity, with Gate 11 in the Ajna, a Collective circuit Channel. Its lines move from Quality and Linkage to Attracting attention and Caution. The fourth, Expediency, is the one this cross always carries. The voice under the Sun is practical: it picks the quickest workable way to say or do something, and it tends to be understood because of it.
Gate 28: The Game Player
Gate 28, The Game Player, is the Design Sun, lived without thinking. It sits in the Spleen, and its hexagram is Preponderance of the Great. It completes Channel 28-38, Struggle, with Gate 38 in the Root. Its lines run from Preparation and Shaking hands with the devil to Treachery and Blaze of glory. Preparation, the first, is fixed here: before the game is played, the groundwork is done. Others may see you ready for a risk that you did not know you were preparing for.
Gate 27: Caring
Gate 27, Caring, is the Design Earth. It sits in the Sacral, and its hexagram is Nourishment. It completes Channel 27-50, Preservation, with Gate 50 in the Spleen, a Tribal circuit Channel. Its lines move from Selfishness and Self-sufficiency to The Executor and Wariness. The first, Selfishness, is fixed in this cross. Under the whole design is a base-level insistence on looking after your own, which can look self-serving from outside and is closer to making sure there is enough to share.
Pressure and voice on the conscious side
The two Gates you know most directly are the Root and the Throat. The Root is the pressure Center, where drive and stress live, and Gate 60 is its Sun. The Throat is where everything that leaves you passes through, and Gate 56 is its Earth. The two lines they carry, Resourcefulness and Expediency, are both about making something work.
Gate 60 is also in a format energy Channel, Channel 3-60, which joins the Root to the Sacral through Gate 3. The cross does not include Gate 3, so the Channel is only yours if your own chart supplies it.
Three circuits in four Gates
The Channels these Gates can complete cover the Individual, Collective and Tribal circuits. Gates 60 and 28 lead to Individual Channels, 3-60 and 28-38. Gate 56 leads to the Collective Channel 11-56, and Gate 27 to the Tribal Channel 27-50.
That spread means no single circuit defines the cross. It is part individual gift, part contribution to the collective, part loyalty to your own people. The limits the name points to may be what keeps those three from pulling in different directions.
The Spleen and the Sacral under the surface
The Design side is the Spleen and the Sacral. The Spleen is an awareness Center of instinct and survival, present tense only, and Gate 28 sits there as the Sun. The Sacral is the largest motor, and Gate 27 sits there as the Earth. Both are lived without effort.
So under the practical, spoken surface runs an instinct for risk and a drive to nourish. Neither shows up as a plan. They show up as reactions: a sudden willingness to take a chance, a sudden need to look after someone. Those are worth noticing, because they come from the part of the design you did not choose.
Why the Limitation is a Juxtaposition cross
Limitation is a single fixed position, and fittingly it is one built around limits. You do not change roles over a lifetime. The same four lines stay, and the practice is to take the edges of what you have and work with them, rather than waiting for the edges to move. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.
The four lines of the Limitation cross
A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Limitation cross carries these four.
| Personality Sun: Gate 60.4 Resourcefulness | Your acceptance of limits comes with resourcefulness, so a boundary becomes a prompt to find another way. |
|---|---|
| Personality Earth: Gate 56.4 Expediency | Your voice is expedient and practical, reaching for the quickest workable way to say or do something. |
| Design Sun: Gate 28.1 Preparation | Below awareness you prepare, so that when a risk arrives the groundwork has already been done. |
| Design Earth: Gate 27.1 Selfishness | At your base is selfishness in the canon's sense: looking after your own first so there is enough to share. |
Living the Limitation cross
At work
People with Limitation often work well under constraints: a small budget, a tight deadline, a fixed set of tools. The cross turns that kind of pressure into invention. It suits roles in operations, writing to a brief, product work and anything where a clear boundary is the starting point. Take care that practical expedience does not become shortcut-taking.
In relationships
Close to home the cross can look like loyalty with a protective edge. You prepare, you provide, and you may keep the concern to yourself. Say it out loud. The people you care for cannot see the groundwork or hear the instinct, and they may only know that you are tense.
In decisions
The Root's pressure and the Spleen's instinct both have strong opinions, and neither is your Authority. This cross does not fix a Type or Authority, because no two of its Gates form a Channel. Decide with the Type and Authority the rest of your chart shows.
Let the cross tell you how you work with limits, and your Type and Authority tell you which limits to take on. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.
When the Limitation cross is misread
"Limitation means my life will be limited"
"The Selfishness line makes me selfish"
"It is the Left Angle Cross of Distraction in another form"
Questions to sit with
One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.
- Gate 60: Which limit in your life right now is asking to be used rather than pushed against?
- Gate 56: When you explain something, what is the quickest route you tend to take, and what does it leave out?
- Gate 28: What risk are you quietly preparing for?
- Gate 27: Who do you look after first, and does that person know it?

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation
What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation?
It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 60, 56, 28 and 27, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path about working within limits, with resourcefulness on the conscious side and preparation and care below it.
What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation?
They are 60.4 Resourcefulness as the Personality Sun, 56.4 Expediency as the Personality Earth, 28.1 Preparation as the Design Sun, and 27.1 Selfishness as the Design Earth. The 4/1 Profile fixes all four, so every chart with this cross carries them.
Why does a cross about limits carry the line Selfishness?
Gate 27, Caring, is the Design Earth, and the 4/1 Profile fixes its first line as Selfishness. It sits in the Sacral and gives the design a base-level insistence on looking after your own.
Which Gate of Limitation sits in the Root?
Gate 60, Acceptance, the conscious Sun. The Root is a pressure Center and a motor, so the Sun of this cross sits in the place where drive and stress are felt. Its Channel partner, Gate 3, is in the Sacral.
Is Limitation made up of motors?
Partly. Two of the four Centers are motors, the Root and the Sacral. The other two are the Throat, which every expression passes through, and the Spleen, an awareness Center. Having motors does not fix a Type.
What does the Spleen contribute to Limitation?
Gate 28, The Game Player, is the Design Sun. The Spleen deals in instinct, in the present tense only. Here it gives the cross an unconscious readiness to take a risk, backed by the fixed first line, Preparation.
