Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment

The Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 29, 30, 20 and 34, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of following through: saying yes, feeling what the yes costs, and putting power behind it in the present moment.

Simple way to think about it: Commitment is the signature at the bottom of a contract. Everything before it was talk, and everything after it is held to the page. The cross is about being someone whose signature costs something and means something.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (29/30 | 20/34). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

Three Centers hold the four Gates, and two of them are motors. Gate 29 is in the Sacral and Gate 30 in the Solar Plexus. Gates 20 and 34 sit in the Throat and the Sacral and form the cross's one inner Channel. The conscious pair, 29 and 30, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of Contagion carries; the Design pair, 20 and 34, comes from the Right Angle Cross of The Sleeping Phoenix.

Saying Yes is your conscious Sun and Recognition of Feelings your conscious Earth, so the agreeing and the feeling that follows it are the part you know. The Now and Power sit together on the Design side as one finished Channel, which means the drive behind your yes is often felt by others before you name it.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 29: Saying Yes

Gate 29, Saying Yes, is the conscious Sun and the Gate that opens the cross. It sits in the Sacral and its hexagram is The Abysmal. It completes Channel 29-46 with Gate 46 in the G Center, the Channel of Discovery, in the Collective circuit. A Sun is the part of you that you know, so the pull to agree and to go all the way in is something you recognize early. Its fourth line, Directness, is fixed in this cross, which keeps the yes straightforward: you say it, and you mean it.

Gate 30: Recognition of Feelings

Gate 30, Recognition of Feelings, is the conscious Earth. It sits in the Solar Plexus, a motor and an awareness Center, and its hexagram is The Clinging Fire. It completes Channel 30-41 with Gate 41 in the Root, the Channel of Recognition, in the Collective circuit. It is the ground under the yes: the feeling that follows an agreement and the wanting that comes with it. Its fourth line, Burnout, is fixed here, a reminder that a fire burns what it is fed and that a commitment held on feeling alone has a cost.

Gate 20: The Now

Gate 20, The Now, is the Design Sun and the cross's only Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Contemplation. It completes Channel 20-34 with Gate 34, and in this cross both ends are already present. Its first line, Superficiality, is the one every Commitment chart carries, so the voice starts at the surface of the moment and deepens as it goes. Gate 20 can also reach Channel 10-20 with Gate 10 and Channel 20-57 with Gate 57, but those depend on the rest of your chart.

Gate 34: Power

Gate 34, Power, is the Design Earth. It sits in the Sacral and its hexagram is The Power of the Great. It completes Channel 20-34 with Gate 20 in the Throat, joining motor energy straight to expression. Its first line, The Bully, is the line every Commitment chart carries: force in its rawest form, strong enough to be used well or badly. Gate 34 can also reach Channel 10-34 and Channel 34-57, though only if Gate 10 or Gate 57 is present elsewhere in your chart.

A Channel that every chart with this cross has defined

Gates 20 and 34 are both in the cross and both on the Design side, so Channel 20-34 is defined in every chart that carries it. That joins the Sacral to the Throat, and it means everyone with this cross is a Manifesting Generator, whose Strategy is to respond, then inform before acting.

What the cross does not fix is Authority. Manifesting Generators can have Sacral or Emotional Authority, and which one you have depends on the rest of your chart. The cross settles who you are built to be and leaves the way you decide open.

One yes from the Sacral, one feeling from the Solar Plexus

Gates 29 and 34 sit in the Sacral, the Center of life force and work. Gate 30 sits in the Solar Plexus, the Center of emotions and waves, which is both a motor and an awareness Center. Two sources of drive meet in one cross.

The conscious pair puts a Sacral Gate beside a Solar Plexus Gate, so the yes and the feeling about the yes come from different places and do not always agree in the moment. The yes can arrive first and the feeling later. Knowing the order helps you stop reading a late feeling as a sign that the yes was wrong.

A Collective surface over an Individual core

The conscious Gates, 29 and 30, can complete Channels 29-46 and 30-41, and both belong to the Collective circuit. The Design Gates, 20 and 34, belong to the Individual circuit, and so does Channel 20-34, the one Channel the cross completes by itself.

What you know about yourself connects outward, toward sharing what you have found and what you feel. What runs beneath awareness is personal power with no audience built in. Commitment is first a promise to your own energy, and only after that a promise to other people.

Why the Commitment is a Juxtaposition cross

Commitment does not rotate through roles. The yes stays the yes, and the Channel beneath it stays defined for life. A fixed fate here means the question is never whether you can follow through, since that power is built in, but what deserves it. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Commitment cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Commitment cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 29.4 DirectnessYour yes is direct. You say it plainly and quickly, and the people around you know exactly where you stand.
Personality Earth: Gate 30.4 BurnoutYour feelings can run hot and use you up, so a commitment held on feeling alone can end in exhaustion before it ends in completion.
Design Sun: Gate 20.1 SuperficialityBelow awareness your voice starts at the surface of the moment, and it deepens as you keep talking and listening.
Design Earth: Gate 34.1 The BullyYour power arrives in its rawest form, and it needs a direction, because force without one lands on whoever is nearby.

Living the Commitment cross

At work

People with Commitment are often the ones who say yes to the long project and are still at it when others have drifted. That suits building, production, delivery and hands-on work, anywhere a response has to turn into steady effort. Watch the pace: the cross can follow through past the point where it should have stopped to rest, so build stopping points into the plan.

In relationships

In a relationship your yes carries weight, and your partner feels it. A quick yes given from enthusiasm can also bind you to more than you meant. Let the Sacral answer the question that was actually asked, and say how you feel about it afterward, since the feeling may arrive later than the answer.

In decisions

Because the Type is fixed, the Strategy is too: respond first, then inform the people your action will touch. Your Authority comes from the rest of your chart.

Use your Type's Strategy to choose and your own Authority to confirm; the cross supplies the follow-through once you have. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Commitment cross is misread

"I am bound to everything I say yes to"

Gate 29 is a Sacral Gate, and the Sacral answers what is put to it. The cross builds the capacity to follow through; it does not decide what deserves it. Choosing well is the work.

"Power means I am meant to dominate"

Gate 34's first line is The Bully, but the Gate itself is called Power, and Channel 20-34 joins that power to the Throat. It is energy built to be expressed, and expressing it well is the point.

"This is the Left Angle Cross of Industry"

Industry holds the same four Gates, but it belongs to the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 Profiles. Commitment is the 4/1 arrangement of those Gates, with every line fixed.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 29: What did you say yes to quickly last month, and what has it asked of you since?
  2. Gate 30: When a commitment wears you out, what feeling shows up first?
  3. Gate 20: What are you doing right now that you would still stand behind tomorrow?
  4. Gate 34: Where is your strength going this week, and is it going somewhere you chose?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

Commitment fixes your Type but not the rest of your chart. A Human Design reading shows your Authority, your other defined Channels and whether Gate 46, 41, 10 or 57 joins the cross in your own design.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 29, 30, 20 and 34, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of following through, with a Channel of power already running beneath it.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Commitment?

The 4/1 Profile fixes them: 29.4 Directness as the Personality Sun, 30.4 Burnout as the Personality Earth, 20.1 Superficiality as the Design Sun, and 34.1 The Bully as the Design Earth. Every chart with this cross carries all four.

Is everyone with Commitment a Manifesting Generator?

Yes. Gates 20 and 34 are both in the cross and form Channel 20-34, which joins the Sacral to the Throat. A defined Sacral with a motor connected to the Throat is what makes a Manifesting Generator.

Why does every Commitment chart carry Burnout?

Because the 4/1 Profile fixes Gate 30 as the Personality Earth in its fourth line, Burnout. Gate 30 is in the Solar Plexus, and the line reminds you that a fire burns what it is fed, so a commitment held on feeling alone has a cost.

How do the conscious Gates of Commitment connect to the rest of the chart?

Gate 29 can complete Channel 29-46 with Gate 46 in the G Center, and Gate 30 can complete Channel 30-41 with Gate 41 in the Root. Both are Collective Channels, and both depend on your design carrying the partner Gate.

What else can Gates 20 and 34 connect to?

Gate 20 can also form Channel 10-20 with Gate 10 and Channel 20-57 with Gate 57. Gate 34 can form Channel 10-34 and Channel 34-57 with the same two Gates, if your chart carries them.
