Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy

The Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy is a Human Design Incarnation Cross made of Gates 9, 16, 55 and 59, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It is a fixed path of feeling and focus: Sacral and Solar Plexus Gates on the surface, and Skills and Focus beneath.

Simple way to think about it: Strategy is the coach's whiteboard at halftime. The plays are drawn in marker, but the team still has to go back out and run them.

Look for the line that reads Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy. The four numbers in brackets are the Gates of your Personality Sun and Earth, then your Design Sun and Earth, for example (59/55 | 16/9). They match the four Gates below. The chart symbols guide shows where the Sun and Earth sit in the two planet columns.

Three Centers hold the four Gates. The Sacral has Gates 59 and 9, the Solar Plexus has Gate 55, and the Throat has Gate 16. The conscious pair, 55 and 59, is the pair the Right Angle Cross of The Sleeping Phoenix carries. The Design pair, 9 and 16, comes from the Right Angle Cross of Planning.

Sexuality is your conscious Sun and Spirit your conscious Earth, so a Sacral Gate and a Solar Plexus Gate sit on the side you know. Skills and Focus run on the Design side. The voice, Gate 16, is below awareness, which is why others may hear a confidence in you that you do not always feel.

The four Gates in plain language

Start with the Gate that holds your Personality Sun, then its Earth, then the Design pair.

Gate 59: Sexuality

Gate 59, Sexuality, is the conscious Sun and sits in the Sacral. Its hexagram is Dispersion. It completes Channel 6-59, the Channel of Mating, with Gate 6, Friction, in the Solar Plexus, a Tribal Channel that joins two motors. It is the Gate of Sexuality, and the Channel it completes is called Mating, so the theme is closeness between people. Its fourth line, Brotherhood/Sisterhood, is fixed in this cross, so the closeness runs toward kinship and a sense of belonging.

Gate 55: Spirit

Gate 55, Spirit, is the conscious Earth and sits in the Solar Plexus. Its hexagram is Abundance. It completes Channel 39-55, Emoting, with Gate 39, Provocation, in the Root, an Individual Channel. Spirit grounds the cross in mood and feeling that rise and fall, and it joins the Solar Plexus, a motor and an awareness Center, to the Root, the pressure Center. Its fourth line, Assimilation, is always here, so what you feel is taken in over time rather than worked out at once.

Gate 16: Skills

Gate 16, Skills, is the Design Sun and the cross's only Throat Gate. Its hexagram is Enthusiasm. It completes Channel 16-48, The Wavelength, with Gate 48, Depth, in the Spleen, a Collective Channel. Lived below awareness, it is the drive to practice until a skill is real, and it is the only Gate in the cross that sits in the Throat. Its first line, Delusion, is fixed here: enthusiasm can run ahead of the facts, and testing it is part of becoming skilled.

Gate 9: Focus

Gate 9, Focus, is the Design Earth and the second Sacral Gate. Its hexagram is The Taming Power of the Small. It completes Channel 9-52, Concentration, with Gate 52, Stillness, in the Root. The canon places Gate 9 in a format energy Channel. It grounds the cross in attention to small details. Its first line, Sensibility, is fixed in this cross, so the focus tends to settle on what is sensible and workable.

The only voice sits below awareness

Gate 16 is the cross's single Throat Gate, and it is the Design Sun. The conscious side is Sacral and Solar Plexus: a body and a mood. The part of the cross that can speak works under the surface, and it is the Skills Gate, with a fixed first line called Delusion.

You may feel much more than you say, and say more than you realize. Others hear the practiced, enthusiastic voice of Gate 16 first. The skill is to check the enthusiasm against reality, which is what the Delusion line is for.

The Sacral holds one Gate on each side

Gate 59 is the conscious Sun and Gate 9 is the Design Earth, both in the Sacral, the largest motor. So the life force shows up on both sides of the chart, in closeness on the conscious side and in focus on the Design side. With the Solar Plexus Gate 55, two of the three Centers here are motors.

The cross itself defines no Channel, so it does not fix a Type or an Authority. Gate 59 needs Gate 6 for Mating, and Gate 9 needs Gate 52 for Concentration. Whether you have them is a question for the whole chart.

A Design pair that points to the Understanding stream

Both Design Gates complete a Channel in the Collective circuit's Understanding sub-circuit: Gate 16 through 16-48, and Gate 9 through 9-52. The conscious Gates are different. Gate 59 is Tribal and Gate 55 is Individual.

So the part of you that works below awareness is aimed at understanding and practice, while the conscious part is about closeness and mood. The cross asks you to bring the two together: feeling that wants to be expressed, and skill that wants to be tested.

Why the Strategy is a Juxtaposition cross

Strategy is held in place by the 4/1 Profile. The Sacral, the Solar Plexus and the Throat sit in the same positions for a whole life. The path is not to find a better plan but to practice the one the Gates already describe: close contact, steady focus, and a skill that is tested before it is trusted. The Juxtaposition goes with one Profile, 4/1. With any other Profile the same four Gates make a Left Angle cross instead.

The four lines of the Strategy cross

A Juxtaposition cross comes only with the 4/1 Profile: your Personality Sun sits in line 4 and your Design Sun in line 1, and each Earth shares the line of its Sun. So unlike every other cross, this one comes with its lines fixed. Everyone born with the Strategy cross carries these four.

Personality Sun: Gate 59.4 Brotherhood/SisterhoodYour closeness runs through kinship, and belonging comes from feeling part of the same family of people.
Personality Earth: Gate 55.4 AssimilationYour spirit takes things in over time, absorbing moods and moments until they become part of who you are.
Design Sun: Gate 16.1 DelusionBelow awareness your enthusiasm can run ahead of the facts, and learning to test it is part of the skill.
Design Earth: Gate 9.1 SensibilityYour focus underneath is practical, settling on what is sensible and workable.

Living the Strategy cross

At work

Strategy suits work where skill is built by practice and shared with others: teaching a trade, coaching, team sports, sales, hands-on training. Brotherhood/Sisterhood favors teams that feel like families, and Sensibility favors tasks that can be done well. Test an enthusiastic plan against the facts before you commit others to it.

In relationships

Close up, the cross makes you easy company, warm and fully present, with moods that rise and fall. Assimilation suggests you need time to take in what happened before you can talk about it. Let people know when you are processing, so a quiet afternoon is not read as distance.

In decisions

A good plan is not a decision. Let your Type and Authority choose, and use the cross to test and practice the plan once it is chosen.

It fits people who like to practice, tweak and share a method, with the choosing left to your own Strategy and Authority. Your Strategy and Authority are how you get there; the cross is where it leads.

When the Strategy cross is misread

"The cross called Strategy is my Human Design Strategy"

They are different things that share a word. A Strategy belongs to your Type, such as responding or informing. The Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy is one of the Incarnation Crosses, and it does not set your Strategy.

"Strategy and the Left Angle Cross of Spirit are the same cross"

They share four Gates but not the Profile. Spirit is for the 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 or 6/3 and is lived through other people. Strategy is the 4/1 only, a fixed path.

"Sexuality in my cross means it is about sex"

Gate 59 is named Sexuality, but the Channel it can complete is called Mating and its fixed line here is Brotherhood/Sisterhood. The theme reaches toward bonds between people and points to kinship, not to any single kind of relationship.

Questions to sit with

One question for each Gate. Notice which one you answer quickly and which one you avoid.

  1. Gate 59: Who in your life feels like family, and what made them that?
  2. Gate 55: What mood are you taking in right now, and what is it showing you?
  3. Gate 16: Which enthusiasm have you tested against the facts lately?
  4. Gate 9: What small thing deserves your full attention this week?

Each one holds Gates of this cross or completes a Channel with it.

A Human Design reading is built from your exact chart, so it shows how your four fixed lines work with your Type, Authority and defined Channels, and whether Gate 6, 39, 48 or 52 completes a Channel for you. Nothing is guessed from the cross name alone.

FAQ: Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy

What is the Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy?

It is a Juxtaposition Incarnation Cross in Human Design made of Gates 9, 16, 55 and 59, carried only with the 4/1 Profile. It describes a fixed path of closeness, mood and practiced skill, with a Sacral and Solar Plexus base.

What are the four lines of the Juxtaposition Cross of Strategy?

They are fixed by the 4/1 Profile: 59.4 Brotherhood/Sisterhood as the Personality Sun, 55.4 Assimilation as the Personality Earth, 16.1 Delusion as the Design Sun, and 9.1 Sensibility as the Design Earth. Everyone with this cross carries all four.

Is the cross called Strategy the same as my Type's Strategy?

No. Your Strategy is the way your Type makes decisions, such as responding or informing. The cross of that name is an Incarnation Cross about your life's theme. They only share a word.

Which Gate gives this cross its voice?

Gate 16, Skills, the only Throat Gate and the Design Sun. It works below awareness. It can complete Channel 16-48 with Gate 48 in the Spleen, if that Gate is in your chart.

What is special about Gate 9 in this cross?

Gate 9, Focus, is the Design Earth and sits in the Sacral. The canon places it in a format energy Channel. It can complete Channel 9-52 with Gate 52, and its fixed first line here is Sensibility.

Does Strategy come with a fixed Type?

No. Unlike a cross that contains a complete Channel among its own Gates, Strategy defines none. Your Type and Authority come from the rest of your chart, not from the cross.
