Split Definition in Human Design: Two Circuits, One Design
Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groups that aren't connected to each other by a channel. Each group processes on its own, so you take in life through two circuits that need time to agree, and you feel a pull toward people who connect them.
Think of a house with two wings and no hallway between them. Each wing works perfectly on its own, and certain people act as the outside path: when they're near, both wings connect and the whole house lights up.

What Is Split Definition?
In Human Design, Definition describes how your defined centers are connected. Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groups. Each group has its own internal circuit with energy flowing between its connected centers, but no channel links the two groups together.
It can occur in any Type except the Reflector, and it needs at least four defined centers (two in each group, though the groups are often unequal in size). The gap between the groups is made of whichever gates or channels are missing that would connect them. According to Jovian Archive's statistics, Split Definition appears in about 46 in every 100 charts (45.9), the most common Definition.
Where Single Definition processes everything through one unified circuit, Split Definition processes through two circuits that each have their own perspective. This is why people with a split often describe two parts of themselves that don't always agree, two inner voices to reconcile before clarity comes. Definition does not change your Type, Strategy or Authority. The other Definitions are Triple Split (three groups), Quadruple Split (four groups), and No Definition (Reflectors).
How Split Definition Works
Your defined centers operate in two independent circuits. Each one processes its own information, but the two don't talk to each other directly. One group might say yes while the other says wait. That inner dialogue is not indecision. It's two legitimate perspectives that need time to find alignment.
The gap between your groups is defined by the specific gates and channels that are missing. These are your bridging gates. When someone carries one of them, their energy fills the gap for a while and your two circuits connect. Those same gates are where you're most open to conditioning: the sense of completeness can be so compelling that you override your Authority to keep it. The bridge feels good. Your Authority tells you what's actually right.
Where the split falls matters too. If your Throat Center is in one group and your Sacral in the other, a bridge links your energy to your voice for a while. If the gap separates your G Center from your other defined centers, your sense of identity and direction may sharpen around specific people. Either way, you are whole: both circuits work fully on their own, and you can live and decide without being bridged.
How Bridging Works
Bridging is the central concept of Split Definition. It's the moment when another person's energy activates the missing gates between your two groups, creating a single connected circuit in your system for as long as they're near. You feel a sudden sense of clarity and completion. Decisions feel easier. You might say "everything just makes sense when they're around." That feeling is real, but it belongs to the composite field between you, not to your energy alone.
Unlike Triple Split, your gap can be bridged by a single person. This is why people with a split are often drawn to one-on-one partnerships and may describe looking for their "other half." Your aura gravitates toward those people without a conscious search.
The bridge is temporary. When the other person leaves, your two circuits go back to working independently, and a decision that felt clear may feel uncertain again. Planets can bridge you too: when a transiting planet activates one of your bridging gates, your split connects with no one else present. On days you feel unusually clear for no obvious reason, check the transit chart.
Small Split vs Wide Split
Not all splits are the same size. The distance between your two groups determines how easily and how often you experience bridging, and so how much of your life is spent connected. Neither is better.
Small split
Only one gate is missing between your two groups. If that gate were active, your whole system would be Single Definition. Small splits bridge easily and often, because so many people carry the one gate you need, and you may barely notice the split in daily life.
Wide split
An entire channel is missing between your groups, so two gates need to be activated at once. This happens less often, and when it does, the shift is more noticeable because the contrast between connected and disconnected is sharper.
Very wide split
Three or more gates are needed to bridge the gap. Finding someone who carries all of them is rare, so you may go long periods without being fully bridged. Your system is built to work comfortably in two modes, and full connection is a less frequent but more striking experience.
Processing and Decision-Making
Split Definition may process slower than Single Definition because both circuits need to weigh in before you reach alignment. One may respond immediately while the other takes longer. You're not indecisive. You're processing in stereo. If someone pushes you to decide before both sides have spoken, ask for the time your design needs.
You may think more clearly with specific people. That's the bridge activating, and it's useful data, but the clarity is the composite field. Before committing to anything decided while bridged, let the bridge dissolve and see whether the clarity holds on your own. If it does, your Authority confirmed it. If it doesn't, the bridge was doing the work.
When your two circuits disagree, your Authority breaks the tie. Sacral responds. Emotions wave. The Spleen flashes. Whatever your Authority is, it speaks for your whole system, not just one half.
Split Definition by Type
Your Type sets your Strategy. Your Split Definition shapes your processing pace and your relationship with bridging. Together they shape your experience.
Generator
You may feel a gut response from one group before the other has registered. Your Sacral response in the moment still decides (or your emotional wave, if your Solar Plexus is defined). Your Strategy is to respond.
Manifesting Generator
Your speed may push you to act before your split has resolved: one circuit fires and you're moving while the other is still processing. That is where many course corrections come from. Respond, then inform before acting.
Projector
Your ability to see and guide others may sharpen when you're bridged, because the right person connects both circuits. Wait for the invitation, and notice which invitations come from people who bridge your split.
Manifestor
You may feel two impulses to initiate that don't always agree. Informing helps here: saying your intention out loud gives both circuits a chance to hear the plan. Inform before you act, and let your Authority decide whether the initiation is correct.
Reflector
Reflectors carry No Definition, so a Reflector cannot have Split Definition. If your chart shows Split Definition, you are one of the other four Types.
Split Definition in Relationships
The bridging mechanism shapes who you're attracted to and how you experience relationships. Your aura draws you toward people who carry your bridging gates, and it can feel like instant chemistry or an inexplicable comfort. The "other half" feeling is not fantasy. When someone activates your bridging gates, your system processes as one, and the completeness is genuine. Knowing it's a bridging effect, not destiny, helps you choose which connections to invest in.
The risk is staying in a connection that isn't correct just to keep that feeling. A partner who bridges your split but isn't right for you by your Authority creates a painful tension: it feels right energetically but isn't right mechanically. A compatibility chart shows the full dynamic, not just the bridging.
Two people with Split Definition may bridge each other at the same time, each filling the other's gap, which bonds strongly. Decisions made in that state belong to the composite, so check your own Authority before big moves that will affect you separately.
Split Definition at Work
You often do your best thinking near someone who bridges your split. That suits you to partnerships, two-person teams and collaborative work: strategy, co-leadership, account management, creative partnerships. Solo work is fine for execution, but ideas may flow better with the right thinking partner, and long stretches of total isolation can slow your processing.
Notice which colleagues make you think more clearly. That's likely a bridging effect. Before a complex decision, spend time with that person; their presence alone helps your processing. And don't let faster processors rush you: a workplace that always demands instant decisions is working against your design.
Daily Awareness
Find the gap between your two groups in your chart and name the missing gates. Those are the gates you're most drawn to in other people. Then notice when your energy suddenly feels more whole or clear, and ask who just entered the room. Knowing you're being bridged doesn't diminish the experience. It lets you enjoy it without mistaking it for a decision.
For important decisions, check your clarity when you're not being bridged. If it still feels correct when you're alone, your Authority has confirmed it. And honor your processing time. Stop comparing yourself to faster processors. Your two circuits give you two perspectives, and when they align, you get the view of both.

FAQ: Split Definition in Human Design
What is Split Definition in Human Design?
Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groups that aren't connected by a channel. Each group processes energy independently. The gap between your two groups creates a pull toward people whose energy bridges the missing connection.
What does split definition mean in Human Design?
It means you take in and process life through two circuits that each have their own perspective. You may need a little more time to reach clarity, and you feel a natural pull toward people who connect the two. Neither half is broken: your system is complete as it is.
How common is Split Definition?
Split Definition is the most common Definition. According to Jovian Archive's statistics, it appears in about 46 in every 100 charts (45.9).
What is bridging in Human Design?
Bridging happens when another person's energy activates the gates or channels missing between your two groups, temporarily connecting your separate circuits into one. The effect lasts only while their energy is in your field, and a transiting planet can do the same. Check decisions made while bridged against your Authority once you are on your own.
What is the difference between a small split and a wide split?
A small split means only one gate is missing between your groups, so it bridges easily and often. A wide split means an entire channel is missing, so it bridges less often but with more impact. A very wide split needs three or more gates, making full bridging rare.
How do I find my bridging gates?
Look at your BodyGraph and find the gap between your two groups of defined centers. The gates or channels missing in that gap are your bridging gates. These are the gates you're most drawn to in other people.
Does Split Definition make decisions harder?
It can make them slower, not harder. Your two circuits each need to weigh in, which can take more time than Single Definition. Your Authority still gives the final answer, cutting through any disagreement between the two.
Why do I feel like I need my "other half"?
When someone bridges your split, your two circuits connect and process as one, which creates a genuine sense of completeness. Your aura draws you toward people who carry your bridging gates. Whether a person is correct for you is decided by your Authority, not by how complete they make you feel.
How does Split Definition affect relationships?
You're naturally drawn to people who bridge your gap, and two Split Definition people can bridge each other at the same time, which bonds strongly. The key is telling real compatibility apart from the compelling but temporary feeling of being bridged. Your Authority and a compatibility chart show the full picture.
Can a Reflector have Split Definition?
No. Reflectors have No Definition. Split Definition requires at least four defined centers forming two separate groups, so your Type will be Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Manifestor.
