Single Definition in Human Design: Self-Contained Energy
Single Definition means every defined center in your chart is connected to every other defined center through an unbroken chain of channels. All your defined centers form one group, so you take in and process life as one piece and can reach clarity on your own, without needing anyone else to complete your system.
Think of a house where every room is connected by hallways: when something happens in the kitchen, the bedroom knows about it immediately. Information travels through your whole system the moment it enters.

What Is Single Definition?
In Human Design, Definition describes how your defined centers are connected. Single Definition means all of your defined centers are linked through channels in one continuous circuit. There are no disconnected groups: every defined center is linked to every other through one circuit, without a gap.
This can look very different from person to person. You might have only two defined centers connected by a single channel, which still counts as Single Definition, or seven or eight defined centers linked in an extensive network. What makes it distinct isn't the number of defined centers. It's the fact that they are all connected through one circuit, so they communicate without a gap, and that continuous internal communication creates the self-contained processing speed Single Definition is known for.
Single Definition is one of five Definition types. The others are Split Definition, Triple Split, Quadruple Split, and No Definition (Reflectors). Your Definition doesn't change your Type, Strategy, or Authority. It describes how the energy you already have moves inside you.
How Single Definition Works
Every defined center in your chart is linked to every other through your one circuit. When one of your defined centers picks up on something, the rest of your defined circuit receives it. There's no delay between one part of your system registering information and another part receiving it.
Continuous energy flow
Your defined centers share a single current of energy. It doesn't stop and start or fragment. Whatever enters your system moves through the entire circuit, which is why you can often reach clarity faster than people with split configurations: nothing inside you has to wait for separate parts to sync up.
No bridging needed
Unlike Split Definition, you have no gap between defined centers for someone else's energy to connect. You don't feel the pull toward people who "complete" your circuit, because it is already complete. Other people can add to your experience, but not to your internal connectivity.
Open centers still matter
Single Definition doesn't mean you're closed off to outside energy. Your undefined and open centers are still fully receptive to conditioning and amplification. That openness is where much of what you learn from other people comes in.
Processing and Decision-Making
Single Definition tends to bring quick internal processing. This has real implications for how you make decisions and how you experience the decision-making process.
You process quickly
When information enters your system, it moves through every defined center at once, and your system presents you with a unified response. This doesn't mean every decision should be instant. If you have Emotional Authority, you still need to wait through your wave, however fast your Definition processes.
Clarity comes internally
You reach your clearest decisions alone. Other people's input can be interesting, but your system doesn't need it to align. If you've been told you're "too independent" in how you decide, this is the mechanic behind it. With Self-Projected or Mental Authority, you still talk it through.
Authority still leads
Single Definition affects processing speed, not the decision-making tool itself. Your Authority is still the final arbiter: Sacral Authority listens for the gut response, Splenic Authority catches the in-the-moment flash. Your Definition makes you fast. Your Authority makes you accurate. A fast wrong answer is still a wrong answer.
Single Definition by Type
Your Type sets your Strategy. Your Definition shapes how you process. Together they create a specific flavor of how you move through life.
Generator
Your gut tends to know almost immediately when something lands in front of you. The risk is your mind processing so fast it gets ahead of your body. Your Strategy is to respond: let the Sacral speak first, then trust how fast the clarity arrives.
Manifesting Generator
You can move very quickly, sometimes feeling you know what's correct before you've fully heard the question. The risk is skipping the Sacral check entirely. Your Strategy is to respond, then inform before acting, and your speed still needs to run through that.
Projector
You process what you see about others quickly. When you wait for the invitation and are asked for your guidance, the insight arrives fully formed. The challenge is that your pace can overwhelm the people you're guiding, especially those with other Definitions. Pace your delivery.
Manifestor
You often know quickly what you want to create. Informing can feel frustrating because your processing has already moved past the decision while everyone else is catching up. Inform before you act anyway. Your speed doesn't exempt you from the Strategy.
Reflector
Reflectors carry No Definition by design, so a Reflector cannot have Single Definition. If your chart shows Single Definition, your Type is one of the other four. If there's confusion, run your chart again to confirm your Type and Definition together.
Single Definition in Relationships
Single Definition creates a specific dynamic in relationships that differs from how Split or Triple Split people experience partnership. Understanding the difference prevents a lot of unnecessary friction.
You don't seek completion
You don't feel an energetic pull toward someone who "completes" your circuit. You enter relationships to share, to grow, and to enjoy another person's presence, not to fill a gap. If you feel you need someone to feel whole, that is coming from your open centers or your conditioning, not from your Definition.
Independence in partnership
You're naturally comfortable with space. You don't need constant contact to keep your sense of self, and leaving doesn't create an energetic gap. This isn't coldness. It's mechanics. It also means that when you stay, it's a genuine choice. A Split Definition partner may read your independence as emotional distance. It isn't.
Pace mismatch
The most common friction point is processing speed. You reach clarity fast. A partner with a Split or Triple Split may need more time, more input, or different environments to process what you've already resolved. Giving them that time isn't waiting around. It's respecting the mechanics of their design.
Compatibility insight
In a compatibility reading, two Single Definition partners may decide quickly together but risk an echo chamber where both conclude too fast. A Single paired with a Split often creates a complementary dynamic where speed meets depth. The composite chart shows how two Definitions interact.
Single Definition at Work
Your Definition shapes how you operate professionally as much as it shapes your personal life, with specific advantages and specific blind spots.
Natural solo worker
You can work alone effectively because your processing doesn't require external input. Deep work, independent projects, and solo execution come naturally, and you may perform better with uninterrupted time to let your internal circuit run.
Quick decision-maker
In fast-paced environments, your processing speed is a genuine asset. You can assess situations and form conclusions with little deliberation, which suits roles that require rapid judgment. Your Authority still governs which decisions are correct.
Team dynamics
You may finish processing before everyone else has started, which can make you seem dismissive or impatient with collaborative processes. Let others finish. Their conclusions may add something your quick pass didn't catch.
Best fit environments
Roles that reward independent thinking and self-directed work: writing, research, analysis, strategy, creative direction. Environments that force group deliberation on things you've already resolved will drain your energy.
Strengths and Challenges
Core strength: internal coherence
Your system speaks with one voice. This gives you a clarity and decisiveness that other Definition types may take longer to reach. You know what you think, what you feel, and what you want with relatively little internal conflict.
Core strength: self-sufficiency
You don't depend on other people's energy to feel internally aligned. You can travel alone, work alone, and live alone without your energy system breaking down. Whether you want to is a separate question, but your system doesn't require company to function.
Core challenge: empathy for other speeds
Other people's slower processing isn't a flaw. When your partner needs three days to decide something you resolved in three minutes, the gap can feel frustrating. But their design is correct for them just as yours is correct for you. Holding space for other speeds is the maturity work of Single Definition.
Core challenge: echo chamber risk
Because you can process everything internally, you may miss perspectives that only come from outside. Your defined circuit is reliable but not all-seeing, and your open centers carry wisdom that develops only through interaction with others.
Daily Awareness
Single Definition runs on its own. You don't need to manage it, but bringing awareness to how it operates helps you work with it.
Trust your speed
When your system reaches clarity quickly and your Authority agrees, trust it. Don't second-guess yourself just because other people take longer. Your quick processing is a design feature, not impulsiveness.
Give others time
With someone who carries a Split, Triple Split, or Quadruple Split, consciously slow down. Don't fill the silence or push for a faster answer. Let them reach their conclusion at the speed their design requires.
Seek outside perspective
Your internal circuit is efficient but bounded. Deliberately seek input from people who see things differently. You don't need their input to process, but you may need it to see what your circuit can't show you on its own.

FAQ: Single Definition in Human Design
What is Single Definition in Human Design?
Single Definition means all your defined centers are connected in one unbroken circuit through channels. Energy flows freely between every defined center without interruption, which tends to bring quick internal processing.
How common is Single Definition?
According to Jovian Archive's statistics, about 41 in every 100 charts (41.48) have Single Definition. Only Split Definition is more common.
How do I know if I have Single Definition?
Your Definition is listed in your chart data alongside your Type, Strategy, and Authority. On your BodyGraph, if every colored-in center is joined to every other colored-in center by colored-in channels with no gaps, you have Single Definition. Generate your free chart to confirm.
What is the difference between Single Definition and Split Definition?
Single Definition has all defined centers connected in one circuit. Split Definition has defined centers in two separate groups with no channel between them. Split Definition people often feel drawn to others who bridge their gap; Single Definition people don't feel this pull.
Do Single Definition people need other people?
Your defined circuit doesn't need outside energy to function, but that doesn't mean you don't need relationships. Your open and undefined centers still take in and amplify other people's energy, and much of your growth comes from there. Single Definition means you're self-contained energetically, not emotionally or socially.
Does Single Definition mean I'm always right?
No. Your Definition makes you fast. Your Authority makes you accurate. Route decisions through your Sacral response, emotional wave, Splenic flash, or whatever Authority your chart carries.
How does Single Definition affect relationships?
You don't seek a partner to complete your circuit because it's already complete. You enter relationships to share, grow, and connect. The main challenge is processing speed, and learning to give a partner time without pushing is the key relationship skill for Single Definition.
Can a Reflector have Single Definition?
No. Reflectors have No Definition because they have no defined centers. If your chart shows Single Definition, your Type is Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Manifestor.
Does the number of defined centers matter?
Not for whether you have Single Definition. Two defined centers joined by one channel is Single Definition, just like eight defined centers joined by seven channels. What matters is that all defined centers are connected.
What is the biggest challenge of Single Definition?
Impatience with people who process differently. Because your system delivers clarity fast, you may struggle to understand why others need more time or more input. Your speed is correct for you but not universal.
