Explaining Your Design to People Who Think It Is Nonsense

Explaining Your Design to People Who Think It Is Nonsense

You mention it once at dinner and watch someone's face do a small thing.

Then you spend the next ten minutes either defending it badly or changing the subject, and afterwards you feel slightly foolish about a thing that has actually been useful to you.

There is a better way to handle this, and it starts with not doing the obvious thing.

Do not lead with the system

The instinct is to explain what Human Design is. Where it came from, how the chart is calculated, what the centers do.

This never works, and it is worth understanding why.

You are asking someone to weigh up a system built from astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system, given to a man in 1987. Whatever you make of that, it is a lot to take in from someone holding a fork.

They cannot judge it. So they judge the only thing they can, which is whether you seem to have lost the plot.

Nobody has ever been argued into a framework at a dinner table. They get curious later, on their own, or not at all.

Lead with what changed

The thing you can actually talk about is what is different now.

"I stopped deciding things on the same day I hear about them and it has gone much better."

That is a normal sentence. Anyone can engage with it. It happens to describe Emotional Authority, but you do not need to say so.

Or: "I worked out that I do about four good hours of real work a day, so I stopped pretending otherwise and rearranged things."

Also normal. Also a Projector discovering they are not built for an eight hour day.

The observation is the useful part. Where it came from is extra, and most of the time nobody needs it.

Be honest about what it is

The fastest way to lose a skeptic is to claim too much. The fastest way to keep them talking is to give them the obvious point.

Human Design is not science. There is no peer-reviewed evidence behind it and it does not claim there is. It was originated by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 and draws on several older systems.

Saying that straight does more for you than any defense. It also takes the wind out of the objection, because they were about to say exactly that.

What you can honestly say is that you have been testing it against your own life and it has helped. That one you can back up.

The four objections, and straight answers

"It is just astrology." It does use planet positions at birth, so the objection is fair. What comes out is different though. A map of defined and open centers, not a personality reading. But if someone rejects anything based on birth time, that is a fair position and there is nothing to argue about.

"It is a horoscope for people who think they are too clever for horoscopes." Sometimes fair, depending on who is using it. The difference is that Human Design gives you something to do rather than something to read. Strategy and Authority are practices. Whether that matters to them is their call.

"It is Barnum statements. Anyone would relate to that." The best objection, and worth taking seriously. Vague descriptions do feel personal. The answer is that the mechanical parts are specific and testable in ordinary life. Either a Projector is wiped out by an eight hour day or they are not. That is checkable.

"You are putting yourself in a box." A reasonable worry. The honest answer is that most of us were already in a box made of other people's expectations. This one at least came with instructions.

When to stop

Fairly quickly.

If somebody asks a genuine question, answer it. If they are enjoying the sport of it, let them have the last word and move on. You do not have to convert anyone, and trying usually costs more than the conversation is worth.

The people who get curious about this almost always get curious on their own, usually months later, usually after noticing you seem to have sorted something out.

The partner problem

Different situation, and harder.

If you live with someone who thinks it is nonsense, arguing about the system is the wrong ground. Nobody wins and it becomes a thing.

What works is asking for the thing itself, without the label. Not "I have Emotional Authority so I need time." Just "I want to sleep on this one."

Most requests do fine without the reason attached. And a partner who watches decisions go better for six months usually stops objecting, whatever they think of where it came from.

You do not need anyone to agree with the system. You need them to accept one sentence about how you do things.

What actually convinces people

Not explanation. Not evidence. Not the chart.

It is watching someone become noticeably easier to be around. Less resentful, less overcommitted, clearer about what they will and will not do.

That is what people notice, and it is the only argument that has ever worked. It also takes about a year, which is why nobody uses it at dinner.

Where to go from here

Want to go deeper?

The best answer to a skeptical question is a specific one about your own chart rather than a general one about the system.
